SYNTOMETRINE<br />

Uses: Postpartum haemorrhage within 24 hours of delivery.<br />

Actions: Stimulates uterine contraction.<br />

Presentation: A clear. Colourless solution containing 5 iu oxytocin and 500 mcg<br />

ergometrine. Vials contain 1 ml.<br />

Administration: Intramuscular injection of 1 ml (<strong>com</strong>plete vial).<br />

Effects: CVS Causes hypertension which can result in <strong>com</strong>pensatory<br />

bradycardia. Can cause transient ischaemic changes and<br />

episodic chest pain.<br />

GI Nausea and vomiting are <strong>com</strong>mon.<br />

Side Effects: As above plus headache.<br />

Contraindications: Active labour.<br />

Ischaemic heart disease.<br />
