“Yeah, I do. at’s why he’s better o being as far away from me as<br />

possible,” Leeney rebutted.<br />

“You’re a damn fool,” Mabel said aloud now like she did to Leeney<br />

then. “You’re a God damn fool.”<br />

Mabel needed to calm down; she was supposed to watch her blood<br />

pressure, an idea that ipped her into a snit. “Never was a Parker who<br />

died from feeling,” she told her doctor when he opened negotiations<br />

about medicine last year. “I’ll just smoke my weed and listen to Jimi<br />

if I feel unduly riled. Besides, I’m an old crow now. I like it. Not much<br />

going on anymore to bother me, other than Leeney’s bullshit.”<br />

And she was right; retirement suited Mabel Parker. Since her<br />

daughter took over the family business a while back, Mabel embraced<br />

freedom. She stayed pleasantly stoned all day and drank expensive<br />

coee and imported whisky. She kept a little garden that was more<br />

sunowers than tomatoes and watched a reproachable amount <strong>of</strong> bad<br />

made-for-TV sci- movies. She played World <strong>of</strong> Warcra fourteen<br />

hours a week, thanks to Tosk, and in general tried to stay out <strong>of</strong> the<br />

world’s way.<br />

Lord knows she deserved it, too. Taking care <strong>of</strong> Cullowhee was not<br />

easy. It demanded more unconditional love than most could muster.<br />

e Parkers were uniquely qualied for the charge due to their ances-<br />

try, and Mabel enjoyed the work but she enjoyed retirement more.<br />

Retired, she had more time to practice magic, and magic was<br />

Mabel’s favorite thing to do.<br />
