See a member of the Evangelism 14 committee (Edna Mattson or Kathy Grunlund) to purchase additional copies. ___________________ Flush Fund As most members of Zion know, we had a major underground project this year. The parsonage began to show the “sick septic system syndrome”—backing up sewage—and Mr. Plumber was not going to handle the fix. The following events then took place: 1. Permit to proceed $ 429.00 2. Trench for new drain field 3,500.00 a. 20 x 70 feet, 9 feet deep at septic tank to 2 to 3 feet deep at the southern end b. time, talent, gravel, equipment (excavator, bull-dozer, dump truck) donated by Mark Anderson, Chad Hord, and Jim Anderson 3. Wm. Dyer (licensed septician) $1,098.73 septic tanks pumped, pipe layout (according to code) 4. Steve Charlevoix supply of $1.881.39 crushed rock and sand (according to code) 5. Filled and leveled donated by those in 2.b. above, plus others Total cost: $6,909.12 All bills have been paid in full, but it did strain the budget and wipe out our Improvement Fund. (contributed by Dick Lindholm) ___________________ Women of Zion Highlights Co-President Becky Nord presided at the September 4 business meeting. In attendance were: Kathy Mattson, Paulette Holmes, Edna Mattson, Mary Jane Bloom, and Sue Anderson. Sue led with devotions. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were reviewed and approved.
There were discussions about the new freezer, a cleaning bee to be held on October 24 th at 8:30 am, and a baby-changing table for the women’s restroom. Jeff Steinbrecher was thanked for repairing the liners of the altar vases. A group will visit the Family Ties gathering at Crystal Lake on September 18, the theme being “back to school.” There were additional discussions about a ministry fair, the vacant secretary’s position, and donation of time and resources for Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp. The next meeting will be Monday, October 1 at 6:30 pm. ___________________ Church Council Highlights The regular church council was postponed a week due to the anticipated absence of several members. The meeting convened on September 24 at approximately 7:00 pm. Present were Bob Mattson, Dick Lindholm, Jamie Lindholm, Mark Anderson, Paulette Holmes, Steve Anderson, Dorn Siegler, David Grunlund, Pastor Joel, and Loretta LaForest (visitor). Absent were John Cootware, Mary Jane Bloom, Dan Nurmi, and John Anderson. Pastor Joel opened with prayer. Under visitor business, Pastor Joel reminded the council of the process outlined in Matthew 18 (and cited in the church’s constitution) to address concerns of one who is offended. The council, in its last session in its discussion of a particular “confidentiality issue” had failed to follow these guidelines. Several of the members expressed concern that Loretta hadn’t been present for the discussion. Loretta spoke to her detailed procedures for handling funds of individual members and her careful concern for privacy. Several council members, including President Bob Mattson, thanked her for her service and apologized for the council’s failure to follow the 15 guidelines for such discussions in the constitution. The financial report was accepted as read. There was some discussion about informing the congregation about the dwindling funds. Bob Mattson agreed to research geo-thermal options for heating the church. Steve Anderson (Worship and Music committee) commented on the need for a new CD player/recorder. Pastor Joel distributed a document entitled “Priorities for Ministry 2012-2013” to be read prior to the October meeting for a discussion and voice vote. He also reminded the council of the upcoming teenServe project and its need for volunteers. The Bibles donated by a Luther Seminary alumni have arrived. The worship and music committee will discuss how best to handle the distribution of these Bibles for worship services. It was agreed that thank-you notes to various organizations that provided time and/or materials for the Carnival should be sent out: MJ Electric, Pat and Judy Steinbrecher, Dewey Solberg, the Cootwares, the Felch Fire Department, Kevin Jayne, Brian and Kristy Anderson, and more. Dick Lindholm will provide a cost breakdown for the sewage system replacement for the next newsletter. The council agreed to move the meeting time back to 7:00 pm. The meeting adjourned with prayer. The next meeting will be 7:00 pm, October 15.
