“People of God gathering around Word and Sacrament”
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Metropolitan
W4703 Metropolitan Road October 2012
Felch, Michigan 49831 Volume 42, Issue 10
Conrad Walter Raether, baptized September 16, 2012

Pastor’s Corner
"If another believer sins against you, go and
point out the fault when the two of you are
alone. If the person listens to you, you have
regained that one. 16 But if you are not listened
to, take one or two others along with you, so
that every word may be confirmed by the
evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If the
person refuses to listen to them, tell it to the
church; and if the offender refuses to listen even
to the church, let such a one be to you as a
Gentile and a tax collector. (Matthew 18:15-17)
We sinners often find it difficult (even
impossible at times) to stand face-to-face with
one who has offended us. The offense may be
anything—a bit of gossip, a slight where there
was once a friendly greeting, a rude remark
about one’s work or family, even an actual
character assassination that is disguised as
innocent (perhaps even helpful) observation.
Our first inclination is to complain to another or
a friendly crowd, not the offender, perhaps
because it’s so enjoyable to be the victim, the
aggrieved. We gather an audience that is “on
our side” and imagine the offender doing the
same and the battle begins—not a battle that is
fought in the light of day, but one whose “sides”
never actually confront each other.
Matthew’s gospel has a simple and loving
method of dealing with our fellow human being
who has attacked us. In private (this is
important) go and point out the error of the
offender. Calm your emotions and expose your
honest and straightforward feelings of the
offense to the offender. And then wait for a
response—an explanation, perhaps, or an
apology, hopefully not more offense. If you’re
satisfied, fine, you can go your way satisfied
2
that the relationship is once again “on an even
keel.”
But, if not, then take one or two others with you
and stand in front of your offender once again.
If the person still will not listen to you, then, and
only then, should you take the matter to the
church body (a mutual ministry committee, the
pastor, a church council committee—whatever
is appropriate for your own situation).
You might think this sounds like so much legal
maneuvering that will suddenly produce an
outcome in your favor, but if that’s your
preferred outcome, you’ll either be overjoyed or
resentful at the decision of the church. Which is
why there is more to this than mere procedure,
more to it than “winning” or “losing.”
What is also needed is forgiveness. “Forgive us
our sins, as we forgive those who sin against
us,” we pray. Like Christ has done for us, we,
too, ought to forgive the offense of others
toward us—and then, forget that offense as
well. And then we act and think and speak to
and about the former offender as if they were
the best of friends, another member along with
all the rest of us sinners in the body of Christ.
Not because they have been “found out,” but
because Jesus has already forgiven them. First,
justice, then forgiveness and reconciliation.
See you in worship,
Pastor Joel

Conrad Walter Raether
Always a great privilege to witness the Holy
Spirit descending and claiming one of us as His
own as the waters of baptism splash about.
Conrad was born January 5, 2012 to Erin and
Scott Raether. His sponsors are Kevin and
Angel Chmurynski, Trevor and Katie Dixon.
Don’t forget this young one, along with his
parents and his sponsors, and his sister
Angelina, in your prayers.
Zion Community Preschool
We are learning new letters, numbers, shapes
and colors in preschool. In daycare the children
are learning good manners and how to play
together. Each morning they hear a Bible story
and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Throughout
the day they are also exposed to Christian
education through song (they enjoy marching to
music.) The theme for September was apples
and leaves, and the theme will add pumpkins to
these.
Angie DuBose, our new Program Director,
would like to thank those who donated flooring
(hard tile that sits atop the carpet) and the wall
calendar. “We gladly accept any and all
donations,” she says. Thanks also to Brenda
Mattson who donated the engraving for the
medals that were handed out at the end of the
benefit walk/run, as well as to Mike and Amber
Lindholm, who donated the bottled water for the
benefit.
3
The Preschool is also collecting register tapes
from SuperOne and Econo Foods, as well as
soup labels, “box tops”, cancelled stamps. All of
these items can be placed in a designated
container near the kitchen in the church
basement.
“We welcome you to come and see our
preschool and daycare program in action. Call
(906) 542-7190 to set up a time to come. We
can always use volunteers. Thank you and God
bless.” (contributed by Angie DuBose)
Bible Study
A series of Bible studies based upon a video
series from Francis Chan, “The Courage to
Stand Alone,” is being planned for high schoolaged
and young adults. The author opens up the
Scriptures and shows students how their faith in
Christ can give them the ability to live lives
defined by courage. Young people share reallife
stories regarding their struggles and
successes in the face of adversity, often fearing
what people would think if they stood up for the
Truth, rather than blending in with “the crowd.”
Our adult Bible study sessions continue on
Sunday mornings at 9:15 am. Having finished a
long series on Acts in the summer, these
sessions are now moving through brief looks at
the book of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song
of Solomon. We read and pause for discussion
at key points. Please join us! You are invited to
participate in the way that is most comfortable
for you: openly sharing your experiences and
thoughts, reading aloud, or simply sitting and
listening. The more that gather together, the
more insights and viewpoints we hear. You are
always welcome. Join us in the conference
room.
A new women’s Bible study, based upon the
book of Isaiah and called “Breaking Free:
Making Liberty in Christ a Reality in Real Life”
by Beth Moore, is in the organizing stage. If you
feel called to lead this study (all using wellorganized
and thoughtful study guides), please
see Pastor Joel or Amber Lindholm. A recent
Beth Moore series on “Esther” drew a number
of women from the community. Probably this
series will meet in the late afternoon/early
evening hours as well.
Bibles in the Pews
We’ve received ninety Bibles from a program
offered, through Luther Seminary, by an
(anonymous) individual donor who is passionate
about seeing Bibles distributed. The program
puts Bibles into the pews of churches with the
understanding that the attendees are free to take
a Bible home with them or to offer a free Bible
to anyone who may need one. The church is
responsible only for the cost of replacing those
Bibles that have left the pews.
So, your mission, members and friends and
visitors to Zion, is to “get rid” of these Bibles
out of the pews to those in need of God’s Word.
First Communion
Fifth graders will be offered the opportunity to
study the sacrament of Holy Communion as
they prepare to begin their own participation at
the altar in the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
These sessions, with Becky Nord as instructor,
will be held on Wednesday afternoons at 3:30
pm during the month of October, culminating in
their first communion on Sunday, November 4 th .
Students may ride the bus from ND schools to
the church. Parents will need to send a note to
the school stating that the student has
permission to ride the bus to Zion for each class.
An orientation and information session for these
fifth graders and their parents and families will
be held on Sunday, October 6 at 6:00 pm at the
church.
Please pray for these young folks as they move
through this important time in their Christian
lives.

Confirmation Retreat
Confirmation students are heading out to
Fortune Lake Camp on Friday and Saturday,
October 12-13. We’ll leave from the ND school
and return Saturday afternoon around 3:00 pm.
The cost is $35 per student, which includes
meals and housing and use of the grounds.
Parental permission slips and requests for funds
were sent home with students at the last
Wednesday class. We’re looking for two adults
to accompany us, a time of fun, reflection, and
gathering together for all.
Confirmation Student compact
I promise to respect this church by speaking
well of it and its members and staff wherever I
11
am, by respecting its property, and by treating
all people with respect.
I understand that, as a confirmation student at
Zion Lutheran I serve as an example for my
peers as well as all members of this community
in my actions and through my words.
I will diligently attend Confirmation class
(beginning to end) and do the assigned lessons
to the best of my own abilities.
I will bring with me to class: 1) my Bible; 2) my
Small Catechism; 3) materials to take notes
with.
I will respectively listen while others are
speaking.
I will leave all cell phones and other electronic
devices outside the classroom.
I understand that I may be asked to leave class
for disruptive behavior, with the result that I
will not receive credit for my attendance on that
day. Before continuing with Confirmation
studies, I will consult with the Pastor about my
future as a Confirmation student at Zion
Lutheran.
BonFire
Wednesday, October 10 at 7:00 pm is the time
to get together with all area youth (sixth grade
through high school) and the youth driving in
from Our Saviour’s Lutheran in Iron Mountain
for a bonfire, with food and games, in the
parking lot at Zion. No fireworks, please! Our

egular youth group time after confirmation
(5:30 pm) will be freed up for study time at the
church, or in helping prepare for the event.
Bullying?
Lt. Col. Grossman
A group of Zion youth traveled to Kingsford on
Wednesday, September 19, first to consume
pizza, but then to listen to a speaker at the
12
Kingsford High auditorium present a talk on
aggressive behavior and bullying, its causes and
possible ways to reverse levels of violence in
schools. After spitting out terribly graphic
scenes of abuse and violence, Lt. Col. Dave
Grossman described a step-wise progression of
mean words and behavior that may be seem
rather benign at first, but which can lead a
person into increasingly abusive acts. A person
can actually become “intoxicated” and addicted
with the attitudes and behaviors that lead to
aggressive behavior—possibly even to murder.
Grossman theorized that much of this problem
stems from the violence found on TV, movies,
and video games. He recommended simple
solutions like: checking out and monitoring
what your children are watching on TV, paying
strict attention to the age-group ratings on video
games, and limiting access to movies with
violence and abuse.
KHS Principal Lyle Smithson wanted to
“encourage students from all of the districts to
attend as well as adults.” There were many
empty seats in the auditorium.
TeenServe Coming to Felch
Lori and Jeff LaBelle of TeenServe will be in
Felch, at the Felch Community Center, on
Tuesday, October 16, 2012 to train volunteers
and solicit support from the community for the
workcamp coming to Felch and ND schools in
the summer of 2013. The team meeting will be
held at 5:30 pm and the informational session
for the entire community will be at 7:00 pm.

The group of young people will serve a wide
area of geography, a radius of about 20-25 miles
surrounding the school, their “home base” for
the week of the workcamp, June 23-29, 2013.
There are many opportunities to help, some of
them are coordinators for fundraising,
volunteers, prep-work, gathering ladders and
materials, hospitality, prayer, and clean up.
Attendance at the October 16 th meetings does
not mean you are committing to the effort. All
area churches who are curious should send
representation to the community meeting at 7:00
pm at FCC. (Gail Robert contributing)
Zion Preschool Walk/Run
Benefit 2012
Forty-eight runners and walkers showed up at
Zion on Saturday, September 15 th for a morning
Flush Fund
As most members of Zion know, we had a
major underground project this year. The
parsonage began to show the “sick septic system
syndrome”—backing up sewage—and Mr.
Plumber was not going to handle the fix. The
following events then took place:
1. Permit to proceed $ 429.00
2. Trench for new drain field 3,500.00
a. 20 x 70 feet, 9 feet deep at
septic tank to 2 to 3 feet deep
at the southern end
b. time, talent, gravel, equipment
(excavator, bull-dozer, dump truck)
donated by Mark Anderson, Chad Hord,
and Jim Anderson
3. Wm. Dyer (licensed septician) $1,098.73
septic tanks pumped, pipe layout
(according to code)
4. Steve Charlevoix supply of $1.881.39
crushed rock and sand
(according to code)
5. Filled and leveled
donated by those in 2.b. above,
Church Council Highlights
The regular church council was postponed a
week due to the anticipated absence of several
members. The meeting convened on September
24 at approximately 7:00 pm. Present were Bob
Mattson, Dick Lindholm, Jamie Lindholm,
Mark Anderson, Paulette Holmes, Steve
Anderson, Dorn Siegler, David Grunlund,
Pastor Joel, and Loretta LaForest (visitor).
Absent were John Cootware, Mary Jane Bloom,
Dan Nurmi, and John Anderson.
Pastor Joel opened with prayer. Under visitor
business, Pastor Joel reminded the council of the
process outlined in Matthew 18 (and cited in the
church’s constitution) to address concerns of
one who is offended. The council, in its last
session in its discussion of a particular
“confidentiality issue” had failed to follow these
guidelines. Several of the members expressed
concern that Loretta hadn’t been present for the
discussion. Loretta spoke to her detailed
procedures for handling funds of individual
members and her careful concern for privacy.
Several council members, including President
Bob Mattson, thanked her for her service and
apologized for the council’s failure to follow the
15
guidelines for such discussions in the
constitution.
The financial report was accepted as read. There
was some discussion about informing the
congregation about the dwindling funds.
Bob Mattson agreed to research geo-thermal
options for heating the church.
Steve Anderson (Worship and Music
committee) commented on the need for a new
CD player/recorder.
Pastor Joel distributed a document entitled
“Priorities for Ministry 2012-2013” to be read
prior to the October meeting for a discussion
and voice vote. He also reminded the council of
the upcoming teenServe project and its need for
volunteers. The Bibles donated by a Luther
Seminary alumni have arrived. The worship and
music committee will discuss how best to
handle the distribution of these Bibles for
worship services.
It was agreed that thank-you notes to various
organizations that provided time and/or
materials for the Carnival should be sent out:
MJ Electric, Pat and Judy Steinbrecher, Dewey
Solberg, the Cootwares, the Felch Fire
Department, Kevin Jayne, Brian and Kristy
Anderson, and more.
Dick Lindholm will provide a cost breakdown
for the sewage system replacement for the next
newsletter.
The council agreed to move the meeting time
back to 7:00 pm.
The meeting adjourned with prayer. The next
meeting will be 7:00 pm, October 15.
