THE TEST DATE: Multiple-choice testing is expected to be held on June 20, 2009<br />

EXAMINATION DATE: The written multiple-choice examination is expected to be held on Saturday,<br />

June 20, 2009. Applicants will be sent admission notices by mail approximately 10 to 14 days before the<br />

examination. Applicants who do not receive an admission notice by June 15, 2009, should phone the<br />

NYCTA/<strong>MaBSTOA</strong> Personnel Testing, Selection & Classification unit at either (347) 643-8084 or (347)<br />

643-8088.<br />

WHAT THE JOB INVOLVES: Line Supervisors (Surface) supervise Maintainers, Helpers and<br />

Apprentices doing maintenance, installation, inspection, testing, alteration, and repair of buses and other<br />

automotive vehicles and related bus shop equipment. They plan work and monitor production levels and<br />

trends; provide technical direction to maintenance employees; use a computerized information system to<br />

access information; perform safety assessments and quality audits; research technical and material<br />

availability problems; perform inspection work and research on new equipment; forecast material, tool and<br />

equipment requirements; keep records and write reports. They may operate a bus for testing, evaluation or<br />

instructional purposes.<br />

Some of the physical activities performed by Line Supervisors (Surface) and environmental conditions<br />

experienced are: working outdoors in all kinds of weather; walking in and around bus garages, climbing<br />

and walking on fuel, oil and gasoline trucks; reaching into dark spaces and making tactile inspections;<br />

making visual inspections of equipment; distinguishing colors; reading gauges and prints; and hearing<br />

warnings (bell, whistle and vocal).<br />

(This is a brief description of what one might do in this position; it does not include all of the duties of this<br />

position.)<br />

SALARY: The current minimum salary is $61,359 per annum, increasing to $75,904 in the 38 th month of<br />

employment. This rate is subject to change.<br />

ELIGIBILITY TO TAKE THE EXAMINATION: This examination is open to each employee of the<br />

Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (<strong>MaBSTOA</strong>) who on the date of the multiplechoice<br />

test:<br />

(1) is permanently employed (employment in title is the result of a list appointment) in the<br />

title of Bus Maintainer - Chassis, Plant and Equipment Maintainer, Bus Maintainer –<br />

Body, Electronic Equipment Maintainer or Stock Worker; and<br />

(2) is not otherwise ineligible.<br />

This examination is NOT open to employees of New York City Transit or to employees of other MTA<br />

agencies.<br />

If you do not know if you are eligible, check with your department’s Human Resources representative.<br />

You may be given the test before we verify your eligibility. You are responsible for determining whether or<br />

not you meet the eligibility requirements for this examination prior to submitting the application. If you are<br />

marked "Not Eligible," your application fee will not be refunded and you will not receive a score.<br />

PROOF OF IDENTIFICATION: At the time of the exam, candidates must present their employee ID’s.<br />

LICENSE REQUIREMENT: At the time of appointment, eligibles must posses either (1) a Class B<br />

Commercial Driver’s License valid in the State of New York with a passenger endorsement and no<br />

restrictions or (2) a Motor Vehicle Driver’s license valid in the State of New York and a Learner’s Permit<br />

for a Class B Commercial Driver’s License valid in the State of New York with a passenger endorsement<br />

and no restrictions.<br />

Eligibles who qualify under (2) above will be appointed subject to the receipt of a Class B Commercial<br />

Driver’s License valid in the State of New York with a passenger endorsement and no restrictions at the<br />

end of a special training course in bus operations.<br />

Candidates who fail to successfully complete the special training course in bus operations, including the<br />

receipt of a Class B Commercial Driver License valid in the State of New York with a passenger<br />

endorsement and no restrictions, will be returned to their former title<br />

Serious moving violations, license suspension or accident record may disqualify. The Class B Commercial<br />

Driver’s License valid in the State of New York with a passenger endorsement and no restrictions must be<br />

maintained for the duration of employment.<br />

MEDICAL REQUIREMENT: Eligible candidates are subject to a qualifying medical examination.<br />

Candidates will be rejected for any medical condition that impairs their ability to perform the duties of this<br />

job in a reasonable manner.<br />

DRUG SCREENING REQUIREMENT: Eligible candidates must pass a drug screening test in order to<br />

be appointed.<br />

Anyone who is appointed to an eligible title after the application filing period closes and who wishes to file<br />

APPLICATION FEE: An application fee must be submitted, along with the application, in the form of a<br />

U.S. Postal Money Order for the amount of $60 made payable to “<strong>MaBSTOA</strong>”. The following<br />

information must be written on the face of the money order:<br />

your social security number<br />

your home address<br />

Exam title and number.<br />

Cash and personal checks will not be accepted. Your filing fee will NOT be refunded.<br />

Employees must keep their employee address up to date. Only the address on file with New York City<br />

Transit Authority/<strong>MaBSTOA</strong> will be used to mail correspondence.<br />

THE TEST: You will be given a multiple-choice test. A score of at least 70% is required to pass this test.<br />

Your score on this test will determine 90% of your total score. Your seniority will determine the remaining<br />

10%. You must pass the multiple-choice test to have your seniority credited.<br />

Seniority will be calculated as follows: a base rating of 70% for all candidates who meet the eligibility<br />

requirements plus 3% for each year of service in <strong>MaBSTOA</strong> to a maximum total of 100% for 10 or more<br />

years of service. Partial seniority credit will be given for each day of eligible service.<br />

The written multiple-choice test may include questions on: the installation, troubleshooting, inspection,<br />

repair, testing and maintenance of automotive equipment, including the tools and equipment used in<br />

automotive maintenance; supervisory methods and practices; safe work practices; reading and interpreting<br />

technical drawings, wiring diagrams and schematics; and other related areas.<br />

ELIGIBILITY TO BE PROMOTED: In order to be eligible for promotion, you must have completed<br />

(1) one year of permanent service in the eligible title as indicated in the above "Eligibility To Take<br />

Examination" section, and you must be permanently employed in the eligible title. Time served prior to a<br />

break in service of more than one year will not be credited for eligibility purposes.<br />

APPOINTMENTS: Candidates who pass the examination are not guaranteed appointment. Candidates<br />

who do not meet the minimum requirements as stated in this Notice of Examination will not have their<br />

names placed on the eligible list, regardless of their score on the examination. Eligibility will be verified<br />

before the eligible list is established. Eligible candidates will be considered for selection in order of their<br />

list standing. All promotions are subject to pre-promotional evaluations.<br />

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Each appointee will be required to successfully complete a one year<br />

probationary period, during which time the appointee may be returned to his or her former position at the<br />

discretion of <strong>MaBSTOA</strong>.<br />

MAKE-UP TEST: You may apply for a make-up test if you cannot take the test on your scheduled test<br />

date due to any of the following reasons:<br />

(a) compulsory attendance before a public body; or<br />

(b) on-the-job injury or illness caused by <strong>MaBSTOA</strong> employment; or<br />

(c) absence for one week following the death of a spouse, domestic partner, parent, sibling, or<br />

child; or child of a domestic partner; or<br />

(d) absence due to ordered military duty; or<br />

(e) a clear error for which the examining agency is responsible.<br />

documentation of the special circumstances.<br />

SABBATH OBSERVERS AND MILITARY PARTICIPANTS: Persons who are unable to take the<br />

examination on the scheduled date because they are Sabbath Observers or because of a prior military<br />

obligation will be given the opportunity to take the exam on an alternate date. To be given an alternate test<br />

date:<br />

Sabbath Observers must present a statement from his or her religious leader, on the religious<br />

leader’s stationery, attesting to the fact that the candidate’s religious beliefs and practices forbid<br />

the taking of the test on the scheduled date.<br />

Military participants must present a copy of their military orders and admission notice.<br />

This information should be brought, in person, to 180 Livingston Street, Personnel Testing, Selection &<br />

Classification - Room 4070 (4 th floor), Brooklyn, NY 11201, Monday through Friday, between 9:00 a.m.<br />

and 3:00 p.m., by no later than May 18, 2009. Your request must include your name, mailing address,<br />

social security number, and the exam number and title. Do NOT mail the documents.<br />
