C-GCC Launches Computer
Forensics Program
Columbia-Greene Community College will launch a new
Computer Security and Forensics Degree program, beginning with the
upcoming spring semester. L The 63-credit program was recently
approved by the state Education Department. Students can enroll in
courses for the curriculum weekdays, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or
during Open Registration Day, Jan. 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (the
college will be closed from Dec. 25 through Jan. 1).
A joint effort of the college’s criminal justice and
computer science departments, the CSF degree was
developed to address the growing local need to
secure computer networks and to investigate computer-related
crime.
With threats to computer networks from muchpublicized
viruses and hackers on the rise, companies
are increasingly seeking workers skilled in network
security. The security need exists for businesses of all
sizes on both a national and local level.
“Local companies recognize the need for graduates
with these skills,” said Phyllis Carito, vice president
and dean of academic affairs. “We’re excited to see
our criminal justice and computer science curricula
expand to address this area.
“The investigative side of computer-related
crime, known as computer forensics, is an attendant
part of the growing computer-security field.”
“Computer forensics is one of the fastest growing
fields within information technology,” said William
DeLuca, criminal justice instructor, “and there is a
shortage of qualified, competent technicians.”
There is also a great need in local, state and federal
law enforcement for investigators with computer-related
skills, he pointed out. DeLuca also added
that even private sector businesses have a need for
employees with computer forensics skills.
Computer forensics technicians need to understand
the law, technology, and the investigative
process. The CSF degree at Columbia-Greene
combines the principles of computing, networking
and investigative techniques that are essential in
Nursing Grads Outperform
National Average on R.N. Exam
Columbia-Greene Community College
nursing graduates from the class of 2006 outperformed
their national and state colleagues on the
national licensing exam for registered nurses,
according to college officials.
Last semester, 92 percent of C-GCC’s nursing
grads who sat for the national licensing exam
passed, according to a recent report from the state
Education Department. The passing average was
88.7 percent nationally and 86.7 percent statewide.
“Consistently, we have been above the state and
national averages,” said Dawn Wrigley, chairperson
of the nursing department, “and with the incorporation
of our new Assessment Technologies Institute
program we hope to see a 100 percent passing rate.”
The ATI company provides an innovative program
that helps students track their progress
through the course of the nursing program. The
ATI program points out weaknesses for review
along the way, including practice tests, and even
monitors when students are ready to take the
national licensing exam.
“We started the ATI program for the first time
this semester,” said Wrigley, “and the students
absolutely love it.”
In all, a total of 49 graduates from the 2006 class
International
Education Week
Celebration
of 53 took the National Council Licensure
Examination for Registered Nurses, with 45 passing.
Wrigley also credits student-centered teaching and
extensive clinical experience for the graduates’ consistently
high performance rates on the national exam.
C-GCC nursing students receive hands-on care
in clinicals in such critical-care areas as intensive
care. Consequently, graduates are able to obtain jobs
in critical-care units upon graduation.
Wrigley also said the college’s honors program
enables students to work extra hours in clinical areas
of special interest. In addition, she pointed to scholarships
provided by the Columbia-Greene
Community Foundation that make it possible for
nursing students to work fewer hours and thereby
spend more time on their studies.
According to a recent C-GCC survey, 100 percent
of the nursing graduates from the C-GCC
class of 2004 who were pursuing employment found
positions as registered nurses, with an average starting
salary of $22 an hour.
Massage Grads Excel on State Licensing Exam
Columbia-Greene Community College has
announced an 88.9 percent passing rate on the
state massage-therapy licensing examination for
recent graduates of its massage-therapy program.
Eight of the nine C-GCC massage-therapy graduates
who sat for the August 2005 exam passed, far
exceeding the passing average of 71.4 percent for all
state residents who took the exam.
All test takers from Columbia-Greene were
members of the class of 2006, which included 12
graduates in all. Three of the 2006 graduates elected
to take the national licensing exam instead, to
accommodate their plans to work out-of-state.
“As a program,” said Coordinator of Massage
Therapy Matthew Kenny, “we celebrate not only
our graduate passing rate with the New York State
licensing examination but the quality of work provided
by our graduates.
“Their ability to provide Swedish and shiatsu massage
has prepared them for the diverse opportunities
C-GCC Business
Department Offers
New Classes for Spring
The business department at Columbia-
Greene Community College will offer two new
courses in the spring semester.
The course, Management will focus on such primary
management functions as planning, organizing,
leading and controlling. The class will be taught
by department Chairman Keith Beebe.
“The class also looks at the newer trends in management
and will cover a significant amount of case
study work,” Beebe said.
Also new this spring is Advanced Medical Billing.
The course is appropriate for students who have
taken the course, Medical Billing, and who wish to
further their knowledge and skill level.
The business department also offers a Medical
Office Assistant program, which also includes such
courses as Medical Terminology, Medical Office
In addition, the business department has scheduled
Business Communications in a 4:30 to 5:50
spring. The strategy leaves room for a student to fit
an additional course in the 6 to 8:50 p.m. time slot
on each of those nights.
“The beauty of this strategy,” said Beebe, “is that
a student can earn nine credit hours in just two
nights a week.”
Also notable under business, according to Beebe,
are Small Business Management, Text Formatting
and Production, and Administrative Office
Management.
“The text formatting course,” he said, “is very useful
for anyone who wants to learn and apply
advanced techniques for producing just about any
type of document in a professional business stetting
or for one’s own private use.”
A number of business courses will also be available
online this spring. They include: Business
Ethics, Quickbooks, Foundations of Buiness and
both Micro and Macro Economics.
In addition, the classroom courses Accounting,
Business Law I and II, Medical Transcription, and
Marketing will also be offered.
The spring semester begins Jan. 16. A complete,
at C-GCC
Mark Decker, a former high school baseball
coach and an assistant director of the
Workforce Investment Office at Columbia-Greene
Community College, has been named head baseball
coach at Columbia-Greene Community College.
“Mark’s coaching and work experience makes him
the perfect choice for the job,” said Athletic
Director Roy Brown, who was serving as interim
baseball coach, while the department conducted its
search. “He knows how to work with youngsters
both on and off the field, keeping them focused on
good practices both athletically and academically.”
“I’ve been influenced athletically by my Dad,” said
Decker. “He taught me that to do well I would need to
work hard every day. I’m going to bring that same
approach to the baseball program at Columbia-Greene.
“We’ll face many good teams. I simply don’t want
there to be harder working teams. I want my ballplayers
to commit to a program that will allow them to
succeed in the classroom and on the ball field.”
Decker coached little league baseball at
Ockawamick, from 1999 to 2004, for which he also
served as vice president, from 2003 to 2005. He was
School, from 1988 to 1989.
In addition he coached for the Taconic Hills
County Youth Organization Basketball League,
from 1998 to 2003.
Decker also has 20 years of playing experience in
baseball. He tossed three no-hitters for Ockawamick
Little League and four no-hitters for Babe Ruth.
A 1984 graduate of Taconic Hills High School,
he was an M.V.P. his fourth year on the team and
struck out 22 batters in one game, a state record. He
also played basketball four years for the school.
He played baseball for C-GCC for two years,
from 1985 to 1987.
As assistant director for the WIO since 2001,
Decker has been responsible for supervising federally-funded
programs to support employment and educational
opportunities in both Columbia and Greene
counties. In his role, he has supervised a staff of 12,
planning youth employment and training programs.
Earlier in his career, Decker was a liaison for
Columbia County Family Court. He implemented
court-ordered services to juvenile delinquents and
Persons in Need of Supervision and counseled juvenile
offenders.
He earned an A.A.S. from C-GCC in 1987 and a
Alumni association can provide strong support
The Columbia-Greene Community College
Alumni Association will take more of a leadership
role on campus and in the community.
This is a significant development for a college
that is expanding its influence beyond the borders of
its sponsor counties.
C-GCC Development and Community Affairs
Director Joan Koweek told the college board of
trustees Monday about the association’s plans to get
involved in the on-campus life of current students.
Koweek is also the executive director of the
Columbia-Greene Community Foundation, which
leads the way in the college’s philanthropic endeavors.
College President James R. Campion said
Koweek’s plan has gained the approval of the alumni
association’s board of directors. Koweek said the
state is requiring all 64 public universities, colleges
and community colleges in New York to raise $3
billion from private sources by 2012.
C-GCC this year met its $1.5 million goal. The
C-GCC foundation led all four community colleges
in the greater Capital Region in fundraising in 2005.
Koweek said most of the funds will be dedicated
to scholarships at a time when going to college is
out of reach for many because of escalating costs.
Koweek pointed out that for the children of single
parents in the Twin County region and prospective
student-athletes new to the area, the cost of higher
education, even for a community college, is becoming
prohibitive.
The scholarships would be distributed for a variety
of awards ranging from community service to
triumphing over adversity.
Columbia-Greene Community College’s alumni,
now a remarkable 8,000 strong, would be a force to
be reckoned with under Koweek’s plan, on a par
with alumni associations at larger four-year colleges.
The plan would broaden the scope of what the
alumni can do at a time when more and more graduates
are reaching out to the community and asking
for help for current and future students.
It’s difficult to raise funds in a small community
like this one, but a strong alumni association can be
extremely persuasive, a lifeline between college and
community. After all, today’s students are tomorrow’s
alumni. ■
to adopt increasingly sophisticated technology
and integrate it into their systems. Job growth will
continue to be driven by the ongoing expansion of
the computer system design and related services
industry, which is projected to remain one of the
fastest-growing industries in the U.S. economy.”
“With our program,” said Carito, “students have
the choice to gear their training more toward public
security or network security, depending upon what
career track they want to take. They can explore that
with their academic advisor along the way.”
A lifelong resident of Greene County, Riley still
works as a consultant for Mid-Hudson. He has also
hosted a talk show on its public access channel for
many years.
In 2000, he retired as director of community services
from Columbia-Greene Community College.
During his 20 years at the college, Riley was instrumental
in growing both the noncredit and training
programs for business and industry at the
Greenport campus.
Riley is a charter member and past president of
the Kiwanis Club of Catskill and is a member and
Cobb has devoted her life to working with
children.
She came to Hudson as a teenager, and after high
school went on to graduate from SUNY Cobleskill
with a major in early childhood education. Her first
job was at the Infant Home of Brooklyn, where, she
says, the training was “intense and rewarding.”
She also worked at the Community Nursery
School in New York City and eventually returned to
Hudson, where she makes her home. She has
worked at the Hudson Day Care Center since 1969.
Cobb is a member of the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored People; the United
Guy Davis to Appear
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 —
Manse Lipscomb, Mississippi John Hurt, Elizabeth
Cotton, and Buddy Guy, among others. It was
through Taj Mahal, says Davis, that “he found his
way to the old time blues.”
Meanwhile, his writing and storytelling have been
influenced by Zora Neale Hurston, Garrison
Keillor, and his late grandmother Laura Davis, who
lived to the age of 105.
Raised in the New York City area, he grew up
hearing accounts of life in the rural south from his
parents and grandparents, and they made their way
into his own stories and songs. Never having the
patience to take formal lessons, Davis taught himself
the guitar, and learned by listening to and
watching other musicians. One night on a train
from Boston to New York he learned finger picking
from a nine-fingered guitar player.
Throughout his life, Davis has had overlapping
interests in music and acting. Early acting roles
included a lead in the film “Beat Street” opposite
Rae Dawn Chong and a part on television as Dr.
Josh Hall on “One Life to Live.”
Eventually, Davis had the opportunity to combine
music and acting on the stage. He made his
Broadway musical debut in 1991 in the Zora Neale
Hurston/Langston Hughes collaboration
“Mulebone” which featured the music of Taj Mahal.
In 1993, he performed Off-Broadway as blues
legend Robert Johnson in “Robert Johnson: Trick
the Devil.” He received rave reviews and became the
1993 winner of the Blues Foundation’s “Keeping the
Blues Alive Award,” which was presented to him by
Robert Cray at the W.C. Handy Awards ceremony.
He went on to write “In Bed with the Blues: The
Adventures of Fishy Waters,”
an engaging and moving
one-man show. The Off-
Broadway debut in 1994
received critical praise from
The New York Times and
The Village Voice.
Davis also arranged, performed
and co-wrote the
music for an Emmy award
winning film, “To Be a Man.”
In 1995, his music was used
in the national PBS series,
“The American Promise.”
Davis also performed in a
theater piece with his parents,
actors/writers Ruby Dee and
the late Ossie Davis, entitled
“Two Hah Hahs and a
Homeboy,” staged at the
Crossroads Theatre in New
Brunswick, N.J., in 1995. The
show combined material
written by Davis and his parents, with music,
African American Folklore and history as well as
performance pieces by Hurston and Hughes.
Of Davis’ performance, a reviewer in U.S.A.
Today observed that his style and writing “sounds so
deeply drenched in lost black traditions that you feel
that they must predate him. But no, they don’t. He
created them.”
For the past decade, Davis has concentrated much
of his efforts on writing, recording, and performing
music. In 1995, he released his Red House records
debut “Stomp Down Rider,” an album that captured
him in a stunning live performance. The album
landed on top lists all over the country, including the
Boston Globe and Pulse magazine.
Twin County Science Expo
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 —
outstanding student scientists the opportunity to
enter a contest in which they are judged by a panel
of experts. Traditionally, the displays of students are
among the top entries and prize – winning exhibits
from local science fairs held at schools within these
two counties. Open to students in grades five
through eight, prizes for first, second, and third
places are awarded, as well as a grand prize made
possible through generous donations from area
businesses.
Davis’ next album, “Call Down the Thunder,”
paid tribute to the blues masters, but leaned more
heavily towards his own powerful originals. The
electrifying album solidified Davis’ position as one
of the most important blues artists of the time.
It too was named a top ten album of the year in
the Boston Globe and Pulse, and Acoustic Guitar
magazine called it one of the “thirty essential CDs
from a new generation of performers.”
Davis’ third Red House disc, “You Don’t Know My
Mind,” explodes with passion and rhythm and displays
Davis’ breadth as a composer and powerhouse
performer. It was chosen as “Blues Album of the
Year” by the Association For Independent Music, and
the San Francisco Chronicle gave the it four stars.
Writing in Playboy Magazine, Charles M. Young
summed up Davis’ take on the blues best: “Davis
reminds you that the blues started as dance music.
This is blues made for humming along, stomping
your foot, feeling righteous in the face of oppression
and expressing gratitude to your baby for greasing
your skillet.”
Davis’ fourth album, “Butt Naked Free,” and all
his records since have been produced by John
Platania, former guitarist for Van Morrison. In
addition to Platania on electric guitar, the disc
includes the musicians Levon Helm (The Band),
multi-instrumentalist Tommy “T-Bone” Wolk (Hall
& Oates, Carly Simon, ‘Saturday Night Live’
Band), drummer Gary Burke ( Joe Jackson), and
acoustic bassist Mark Murphy (Walt Michael &
Co., Vanaver Caravan).
Of the fifth album ,“give in kind,” music critic
Dave Marsh wrote, “Davis never loses sight of the
blues as good time music, the original forum for
dancing on top of one’s sorrows. Joy made more
exquisite, of course, by the sorrow from which it
springs.”
“Chocolate to the Bone,”
Davis’ sixth album followed
with more accolades and
acclaim, including a W.C.
Handy award nomination for
“Best Acoustic Blues
Album.” In fact, he has been
nominated for nine Handy
Awards over the years.
His latest album, “Legacy”
was picked as one of the Best
CDs of the Year by National
Public Radio, and the lead
track, “Uncle Tom’s Dead,”
was chosen as one of the Best
Songs of the Year.
Davis has also done residency
programs for the
Lincoln Center Institute, the
Kennedy Center, and the
State Theatre in New Jersey.
Most recently, he was an
honored guest at the
Kennedy Center Awards in which his parents,
Warren Beatty, Elton John, Joan Sutherland, and
John Williams received medals from President
George Bush.
All tickets for the Davis Concert are $15, and are
available at the college, Greenport; the Hudson
Opera House, Hudson; and the Greene County
Council on the Arts, Catskill.
“This event serves to showcase the work of outstanding
student scientists, one of whom could hold
the key to dealing with major human issues such as
a cure for cancer or a reduction in global warming,”
related Gregory. Following the judging, students,
parents, and interested members of the public can
view the exhibits prior to the award presentations
during the early afternoon.
Understanding Your Options
This course provides participants with the information
and tools to make informed decisions regarding
long-term care insurance. Over 40% of persons
reaching age 65 can expect to spend some time in a
nursing home during their lifetime. Nursing home
care and care in your home can be very expensive.
How can you prepare for the cost of long-term care?
Many people purchase long-term care insurance to
offset the high cost of their long-term care, maintain
their independence and have more flexibility in
choosing the type and location of the care they
receive. Premium costs are lower when you apply
younger and planning ahead can, not only help you
save money, but secure your choices and peace of
mind.
This class will help you identify what your risk of
needing long-term care is, what your long-term care
options are, and how to determine if long-term care
insurance is right for you.
