PRO LIFE CORNER
Governments have spent billions
of dollars to search out
life on other planets. Doesn’t it
make you wonder what would
happen if new life on another
planet were to be discovered?
Would it, too, be killed for
convenience because it was
deemed unwanted, as are
millions of unborn babies in
this country?
VOCATIONS
Do this in remembrance of me.
Feed the hungry; proclaim the
June 2, 2013 Corpus Christi, The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
F R . G R E G ’ S N O T E S
“This the truth each Christian learns,
bread into His Flesh He turns, to His
Precious Blood the wine: sight has
failed, nor thought conceives, but a
dauntless faith believes, resting on a
power Divine.”
The above is a small portion of the
special “Sequence” for the awesome celebration
of “Corpus Christi” this weekend!
It should remind us of our God’s tremendous
Love for us, as well as His humility
in making Himself truly Present in such a
humble and “helpless” manner: under the
forms of bread and wine. Our sight,
touch, smell and taste are “fooled” into
thinking that He is merely bread and
wine! Only our faith tells us differently!
He entrusts Himself into our protective
care. Do we entrust ourselves into His?
Do we honor His Real Presence by guarding
Him? By showing great care and
reverence when we approach to receive
Him in Holy Communion? By dressing
respectfully and modestly before we enter
THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY
JUNE 8th
This feast honors the interior life of Mary,
including her joys and sorrows, and her
compassion for all humanity.
Does everyone in your family have a
rosary? If not, let each person pick one
in a favorite color and pray a decade of the
rosary together. Hang a rosary in your
children’s bedrooms or place one under
their pillow as a reminder of Mary’s love
for all of God’s children.
SAINT OF THE MONTH OF JUNE
ST. MARIANNE COPE, O.S.F.
Mother Marianne was born Barbara Koob
(variants: Kob, Kopp, and now officially Cope) on
January 23, 1838 and baptized the following day
in what is now Hessen, West Germany. She was
the daughter of farmer, Peter Koob and Barbara
Witzenbacher Koob, his second wife. Peter
Koob’s first wife had nine children before she
died, only two of whom reached adulthood. Peter
and Barbara Koob had five children born in
Germany, and five born in the United States.
1839, the year following Barbara’s birth, the
family emigrated to the United States to seek a
new start in the land of opportunity.
Peter Koob and his children became naturalized
citizens in the 1850’s. They became members of
St. Joseph’s Parish in Utica, N.Y. where all the
children attended the parish school. Barbara
received her first Holy Communion and was
Confirmed at St. John’s Parish in Utica. It was
the practice at that time for the bishop of the
diocese to come to the largest church in the
area to administer these two Sacraments at the
same time. Barbara wrote of experiencing a call
to Religious life at an early age. However, the
desire to follow her vocation was delayed nine
years because of family obligations. As the oldest
child at home, and after completing an
eighth grade education, she went to work in a
factory to support the family when her father
became an invalid. Only when her younger siblings
could care for themselves did Barbara feel
free to enter the convent. She did so one month
after her father’s death in the Summer of 1862.
She was 24 years of age.
She joined the Sisters of the Third Order of
Saint Francis, and began a whirlwind of leadership
roles: twice as the Novice Mistress of her
Congregation, and three times as the Superior of
St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse. This leadership,
coupled with her sympathy for mankind in
general, led her to volunteer to go to Hawaii to
take care of the lepers. She was finally stationed
in Molokai, where she brought education
and happiness to the leper colony: even providing
bright scarves and pretty dresses for the
women.
