President’s
PersPective
By Bob Welch, CBCC President
O
ur business is to
help your business
grow,” is the
Central Bucks Chamber of
Commerce’s oft repeated
slogan – and one with
the backbone to match. A
community institution and
resource since 1946, the
Chamber strives each and
every day to help businesses
evolve - and flourish.
I was first drawn to CBCC
by several interesting, friendly and successful people
who were active members. In the late '90's, these
friends encouraged me to join and participate in
Chamber events and activities. At the time I was
skeptical. Would my participation help my business
or personal development as a businessman? Well,
some 15 years later, I can say with great confidence
that the Chamber has greatly assisted my business,
increasing both my personal and business visibility
within the Central Bucks County region.
For a business, visibility, that oh-so-important
commodity, is paramount and a solid foundation
for success. The Chamber’s mission statement, see
sidebar, states clearly its goal of providing venue and
resource opportunities for you and your business to
build valuable, successful alliances. The Chamber’s
advertising, networking, and many referral and event
sponsorship opportunities, are proven and powerful
business tools. Additionally, programs like "link at
lunch," "business to business breakfasts," business
card exchanges and a host of other Chamber events
will greatly increase your business’ exposure and
name recognition. Please visit the CBCC’s website for
complete event descriptions and calendar listings.
Besides visibility, we encourage participation
from all of our members in the Chamber’s many
business development and training activities. For
example, programs such as the Business Growth
Series, sponsored by National Penn Bank, features
workshops focusing on important business subjects
like social networking, cash flow and business
planning strategies. Or the Chamber’s Entrepreneurial
Assistance Program allows Chamber members to
receive expert advice from Chamber professionals
including accounting, legal and marketing inquiries.
The Chamber has many business development
programs and they are described and advertised on
CBCC’s website.
In summary, improving your personal and business
visibility while honing your business skills and
expertise are two ways that the Chamber greatly
increases your chances of success. In today’s
challenging economy, where you need every
advantage and resource available to grow your
business – the Chamber is just the ‘leg-up’ you are
looking for. The old adage, "What you put in, is what
you get out," applies to your Chamber membership
because in a very short time period, you'll be
surprised at the knowledge gleaned and contacts
established. At the same time, have fun! and enjoy
the journey.
And as the Chamber’s newest President, I am
pleased to build strong alliances with you and will
strive to make the CBCC an even more focused
business catalyst for the Central Bucks County
business community.
Joe Schmider, Emergency Medical Services Director:
Overseeing a system of saving lives
Sponsored by LaSalle University & Bucks County Bank
By Anne Biggs, Journalist
If you are wondering how someone goes from
employee at the local bakery to director of the
state’s Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, know
this: it has nothing to do with starting a fire in the
kitchen or getting cut by the bread slicing machine.
But it does have a lot to do with a baker’s unusual
hours and his subsequent availability to follow in the
family tradition and serve as a firefighter, EMT and
rescue technician. And once Joseph W. Schmider left
his job at the bakery, his rise through the ranks was
steady and rewarding.
The former baker and firefighter was the featured
speaker at the Chamber’s December Business-to-
Business breakfast. He reeled off amazing statistics
about Pennsylvania’s emergency services system,
which is the sixth largest in the nation with 1.8 million
dispatches a year, and noted that Bucks County’s
emergency services plan was the basis for the one
adopted in 1987 by the state.
Schmider pointed out that the state EMS is challenged
by new regulations and finding funding for EMS
community services. He urged businesspeople to serve
14 Who • What • Where • When
on local emergency services boards to bring a sorely
needed business approach to the running of these
small organizations.
He said that those who get into EMS should have
two responses when they come face to face with an
emergency: compassion, and the certainty that “I want
to go in there and make sense of that situation.”
The breakfast at the Waterwheel Restaurant
was sponsored by LaSalle University &
The Bucks Fever FilmFest is an annual,
juried festival. Winning short films
submitted by high school, college and
emerging filmmakers are screened at the
County Theater in Doylestown, Pa.
FilmFest was born in 1999 at a planning
meeting of the Bucks Fever Advisory
Council of the Central Bucks Chamber
of Commerce. At that meeting,
Chamber member Jon Wilner
(formerly of the Delaware Valley Arts
Institute), suggested that we add a
contemporary art form of growing
interest in Bucks County, a Film
Festival, to the 25-year-old Bucks
Fever, Celebration of the Arts Program.
FilmFest would encourage and support the growth of
a filmmaking community by providing a venue to view
the works of area professional and student filmmakers.
Key to the concept was a partnership with the County
Theater, the independent movie theater in downtown
Doylestown that had sparked a revitalization of
Doylestown and built a strong interest in films and
filmmaking in the community. The County Theater’s
founder and Executive Director, John Toner and his
Manager, Jim Sanders, agreed to collaborate with the
Chamber and FilmFest in providing the screening
venue for the films, because of FilmFest’s mission to
provide a mentoring and learning experience with
rising area student filmmakers, along with adult and
professional filmmakers.
