README95.txt
This file contains precinct election data from the 1995 Mississippi General
Elections for governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general,
auditor, treasurer, commissioner of agriculture, commissioner of insurance, county
supervisors, term limits initiative, district attorneys, commissioners of
transportation, and public service commissioners.
It was prepared by David Lublin, Assistant Professor, Department of Government,
School of Public Affairs, American University (dlublin@american.edu) and D. Stephen
Voss, Department of Political Science, University of Kentucky in
cooperation with the Elections Division of the Mississippi Secretary of State
Office. A grant from the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Division of
the National Science Foundation (#9710058) was critical toward entering this
election data in electronic form and making it publicly available.
Although prepared using official election returns, no guarantee is made on the
accuracy of the electronic data.
The data are in Microsoft Excel and commas separated variable (CSV) formats. The
data is in four separate worksheets within the MS Excel workbook. In CSV format,
the data has been divided into four equivalent files.
Workbook Statewide
A. COUNTY is the name of the county.
B. PRECINCT is the name of the precinct.
C. GOVREP is the number of votes for the Republican Governor candidate.
D. GOVDEM is the number of votes for the Democratic Governor candidate.
E. LGREP is the number of votes for the Republican Lieutenant Governor
candidate.
F. LGDEM is the number of votes for the Democratic Lieutenant Governor
candidate.
G. SOSREP is the number of votes for the Republican Secretary of State
candidate.
H. LGIND is the number of votes for the Democratic Secretary of State
candidate.
I. AGREP is the number of votes for the Republican Attorney General
candidate.
J. AGDEM is the number of votes for the Democratic Attorney General
candidate.
K. AUDREP is the number of votes for the Republican Auditor candidate.
L. AUDDEM is the number of votes for the Democratic Auditor candidate.
M. TRSREP is the number of votes for the Republican Treasurer candidate.
N. TRSDEM is the number of votes for the Democratic Treasurer candidate.
O. AGRREP is the number of votes for the Republican Commissioner of
Agriculture candidate.
P. AGRDEM is the number of votes for the Democratic Commissioner of
Agriculture candidate.
Q. CIDEM is the number of votes for the Democratic Commissioner of Insurance
candidate.
R. CIREP is the number of votes for the Republican Commissioner of Insurance
candidate.
S. SUPD is the number of the County Supervisor District (also called a Beat)
within each country.
T. SUPREP is number for votes for the Republican County Supervisor candidate.
U. SUPDEM is number for votes for the Democratic County Supervisor candidate.
V. SUPIND1 is the number of vote for the first Independent County Supervisor
candidate.
W. SUPIND2 is the number of vote for the second Independent County Supervisor
candidate.
X. SUPIND3 is the number of vote for the third Independent County Supervisor
candidate.
