Dear Friends,
Hiroshima is more than a city. As the first city to be attacked by a
nuclear bomb, it is a symbol of the wanton destructiveness of nuclear
weapons. Three days after Hiroshima was destroyed, a second city,
Nagasaki, was also attacked with a nuclear bomb. Between the two
cities, some 220,000 people died by the end of 1945 as a result of the
two bombings. The curtain had risen on the Nuclear Age. Today, more
than 20 years after the end of the Cold War, there are still more than
20,000 nuclear weapons in the arsenals of nine countries.
Since my first visit to Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1963, I have been
impressed by the spirit and resilience of these cities. The survivors of
the bombings, the hibakusha, have had an unconquerable spirit of
hope and commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons. They have
not only rebuilt their flattened cities and their lives, but they have
taken it upon themselves to speak out so that their past does not become the future of some other
city or of humanity as a whole. They have said, “Nuclear weapons and human beings cannot
co-exist.” They have stood firmly for a human future, seeking the abolition of all nuclear weapons.
At the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, we share the passion and commitment of the hibakusha to
achieving a world free of nuclear weapons. Our mission is "To educate and advocate for peace and a
world free of nuclear weapons and to empower peace leaders." We do this in many ways: through
books, articles, lectures, conferences, websites, newsletters, contests, awards and our Action Alert
Network and Peace Leadership Program.
In this past year, the Foundation held a conference on the Dangers of Nuclear Deterrence at which
we took a hard look at the myths surrounding nuclear deterrence and developed the Santa Barbara
Declaration, Reject Nuclear Deterrence: An Urgent Call to Action. This Declaration was placed in the
Congressional Record by Representative Lois Capps. We also worked with the Swiss government in
holding a conference at the United Nations in Geneva on the need to lower the alert status of
nuclear weapons. We held a second conference in Geneva this year with the government of
Kazakhstan on the need to end all nuclear testing and bring the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty
into force.
The Foundation's membership has grown to nearly 50,000. We have more than 2,500 participants in
our Peace Leadership program. More than 600,000 unique viewers visit our websites annually. We
have sent more than 65,000 messages on timely nuclear issues to political leaders through our Action
Alert Network. We have also worked with like-minded organizations throughout the world on our
common goal of achieving a more peaceful and nuclear weapon-free world. In addition, we’ve
involved 12 hardworking and committed interns from around the country in many aspects of the
Foundation’s work in 2011.
Tonight, at our 28th Annual Evening for Peace, we shine a light on Peace Leadership for a nuclear
weapon-free world. We honor two outstanding peace leaders, Tadatoshi Akiba, the former Mayor
of Hiroshima, and Shigeko Sasamori, a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, for their
commitment, compassion and courage. Through these awards, we honor the survivors of Hiroshima
and Nagasaki for their personal courage in keeping alive the flame of hope that we can end the
overriding nuclear weapons threat to humanity.
Thank you for joining us for this 28th Annual Evening for Peace, "From Hiroshima to Hope," and
for your support of our work for peace and a world free of nuclear weapons.
2011 Distinguished Peace Leadership Award
tadatOShi akiba
Former Mayor of Hiroshima Tadatoshi Akiba is one
of the most prominent leaders in the campaign to
abolish nuclear weapons. During his three terms as
Mayor from 1999 to 2011, he served as President of
Mayors for Peace and oversaw its expansion from
440 members to nearly 5,000, uniting mayors in
more than 100 countries for the launch of its 2020
Vision Campaign to escalate pressure on governments
to abolish all nuclear weapons by 2020. Earlier
in his career, he was a mathematics professor
before serving in the Japanese House of Representatives
for nine years. While teaching at Tufts University
in 1979, he created the Hibakusha Travel
Grant Program, inviting international journalists to
Hiroshima and Nagasaki to hear from the
hibakusha (survivors) and help the world understand the realities of the atomic
bombings. He has received numerous awards for his international peace work,
including the Ramon Magsaysay Award (also known as the Asian Nobel Prize).
2011 World Citizenship Award
of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Shigeko Sasamori is accepting the World Citizenship
Award on behalf of all hibakusha. She was
13 years old and within one mile of the blast’s
hypocenter when the nuclear bomb exploded
over Hiroshima. She is one of the few surviving
Hiroshima Maidens, a group of 25 women who
were seriously injured by the blast and brought to
the U.S. for reconstructive surgery in 1955 by
Norman Cousins. She returned to the U.S. in 1958
to study nursing and became an adopted member
of the Cousins family. For over 30 years, she has
campaigned worldwide for nuclear disarmament,
traveling extensively to share her story and raise awareness. She has appeared
before heads of state, the United Nations and in the documentary “White
Light/Black Rain: Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.” She currently serves
as the CEO of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Peace Projects.

From Our Architects of Peace
i feel so fortunate to be involved with the nuclear age peace Foundation.
i have found the members to consistently have integrity, persistence and
creativity. the articles and talks by david krieger this past year have been
thoughtful, provocative and right on target. paul chappell’s three books
and peace work are inspired. there is much we can learn from his valuable
insights and communication skills. What thrills me the most is the peaceful,
optimistic consciousness that is evident throughout the organization.
i believe from the depths of my soul that we can and will achieve peace
through peaceful thinking and actions.
This Evening for Peace is partly sponsored
in loving memory of
