The numbers say it all… More than 50 percent of <strong>the</strong> U.S. population growth between<br />
2000 and 2010 was driven by increases in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Hispanic</strong> population – which grew by 43<br />
percent. The Latino population in <strong>the</strong> U.S. is estimated at 50.5 million based on 2010<br />
Census data, up from 35.3 million in 2000. Today, <strong>Hispanic</strong>s comprise 16 percent of <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>to</strong>tal U.S. population.<br />
While immigration remains a key fac<strong>to</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> growth of <strong>the</strong> nation’s Latino population, U.S.-born <strong>Hispanic</strong>s are fueling much of <strong>the</strong><br />
population, accounting for 23 percent of children under <strong>the</strong> age of 18 in <strong>the</strong> U.S. Latinos in <strong>the</strong> 16 <strong>to</strong> 25 age group make up 18 percent<br />
of all young people in <strong>the</strong> U.S. Additionally, one in every four babies born in <strong>the</strong> U.S. is <strong>Hispanic</strong>.<br />
Although <strong>the</strong>re are more bicultural and bilingual Latinos in <strong>the</strong> U.S. than ever before, <strong>the</strong> need <strong>to</strong> reach a populace with Spanishlanguage<br />
audio and visual content remains vital. From broadcast and cable television <strong>to</strong> radio stations, from print publications <strong>to</strong><br />
websites and even out-of-home advertising, this strong and influential group of consumers continues <strong>to</strong> warrant a wide range of<br />
media choices.<br />
The <strong>Hispanic</strong> market is changing <strong>the</strong> way that agencies, marketers and <strong>the</strong> media think about Latino-focused marketing campaigns<br />
and advertising dollars. <strong>Hispanic</strong> purchasing power, now estimated at $1 trillion, will rise <strong>to</strong> $1.5 trillion in 2015, larger than <strong>the</strong><br />
economies of all but eight countries in <strong>the</strong> world.<br />
As <strong>the</strong> economy continues <strong>to</strong> stabilize, many advertisers are opening <strong>the</strong>ir marketing purses and investing more dollars against <strong>the</strong><br />
coveted <strong>Hispanic</strong> consumer, who for many has been identified as <strong>the</strong> primary source for sales growth. Advertising dollars targeting<br />
Latino consumers are increasing slowly as marketers regain <strong>the</strong>ir financial footing and pay closer attention <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> numbers – <strong>the</strong><br />
growing Latino population and <strong>the</strong>ir fast-paced gains in purchasing power.<br />

Spanish-language television remains one of <strong>the</strong> leading drivers of growth in <strong>the</strong> U.S. <strong>Hispanic</strong> advertising industry, allowing marketers <strong>to</strong> create mass reach for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
messages. For most major brand categories, broadcast networks continue <strong>to</strong> attract <strong>the</strong> bulk of a company’s investment in <strong>the</strong> U.S. <strong>Hispanic</strong> marketplace.<br />
It is not just traditional commercials, however, that attract advertisers <strong>to</strong> broadcast networks targeting Latino viewers. Product integration, programming sponsorships<br />
and establishing personal relationships with <strong>the</strong> viewer are ever-growing and have been seen across telenovelas as well as networks’ online and mobile offerings. Sports<br />
networks are also in on <strong>the</strong> action, with unique ways advertisers can get <strong>the</strong>ir brand message across without waiting for a break in <strong>the</strong> action.<br />
Beyond <strong>the</strong> “big four” <strong>Hispanic</strong> networks are such national players as América CV Network, Vme, Estrella TV, LATV, MegaTV, and NuvoTV. Thanks <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> shift from analog<br />
<strong>to</strong> digital television, <strong>the</strong>re’s potential for even fur<strong>the</strong>r growth in <strong>the</strong> Spanish-language television space from coast <strong>to</strong> coast.<br />

The advent of more <strong>Hispanic</strong>-focused cable networks is giving media companies, advertisers and viewers alike more options, more opportunities for engagement.<br />

Diversity in <strong>the</strong> type of Spanish-language television programming found in <strong>the</strong> U.S. is greater than ever, thanks <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> emergence of networks delivered via cable, direct<br />
satellite providers such as Dish Network and DirecTV, and internet-based AT&T U-Verse.<br />
At present, roughly 75 television channels specifically target Latinos through cable and satellite networks available in various markets across <strong>the</strong> U.S. But distribution<br />
of <strong>the</strong>se channels remains a key fac<strong>to</strong>r for advertisers. Thus, <strong>the</strong> 15 channels found in at least 30 percent of <strong>Hispanic</strong> comes with cablevision are <strong>the</strong> ones attracting <strong>the</strong><br />
most attention from media buyers.<br />
News ’s Fox introduced Fox <strong>Hispanic</strong> <strong>Media</strong> - uniting Fox Deportes, Latina-focused Utilísima, and Nat Geo Mundo, a non-fiction entertainment network. Univision is<br />
looking <strong>to</strong> roll out three new cable networks, with <strong>the</strong> first tentatively titled UniNovelas, plus all-sports channel Univision Deportes and a Spanish-language 24-hour<br />
news network.<br />
With more Spanish-language and <strong>Hispanic</strong>-focused cable networks in <strong>the</strong> mix, <strong>the</strong>re are more options for both viewers and advertisers… and more competition for <strong>the</strong><br />
coveted dollars.<br />

Advertising in national glossy publications targeting Spanish-speaking U.S. <strong>Hispanic</strong>s <strong>to</strong>taled $1 . million through <strong>the</strong> eight<br />

But <strong>the</strong> majority of those dollars went <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p 15 titles, in particular People en Español ($38.2 million) and Latina magazine<br />
($1 . million).<br />
As advertisers recover from <strong>the</strong> economic fallout, dollars <strong>to</strong> Latino-focused magazines are on <strong>the</strong> rebound. A new report from<br />
Kantar <strong>Media</strong> reveals that Spanish-language magazines saw a 29 percent increase in advertising dollars during <strong>the</strong> first six<br />
months of 011.<br />
Although some advertiser categories have slashed <strong>the</strong>ir magazine budgets, o<strong>the</strong>rs have doubled <strong>the</strong>ir dollars in <strong>the</strong> past year.<br />
The <strong>to</strong>p three advertiser categories in <strong>the</strong> Spanish-language magazines tracked by <strong>Hispanic</strong>MagazineMoni<strong>to</strong>r have increased<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir investment by double-digit percentages - cosmetics ( . percent), food products ( . percent) and haircare ( .<br />
percent).<br />
Now more than ever <strong>Hispanic</strong> magazine advertisers are creatively targeting readers through methods above and beyond<br />
a simple ad in <strong>the</strong> book. One way is through cus<strong>to</strong>m publishing o<strong>the</strong>rs are turning <strong>to</strong> adver<strong>to</strong>rials - typically multi-page ads<br />
designed <strong>to</strong> fit in with a magazine’s content, but cover a particular brand or product.<br />

Spanish-language newspapers in <strong>the</strong> last year have continued <strong>to</strong> see many of <strong>the</strong> struggles that have crippled non-Latino titles large and small across <strong>the</strong> U.S. Latino<br />
newspapers have continued <strong>to</strong> see declining ad dollars, posting a 5.9 percent drop in advertising during <strong>the</strong> first six months of 2011, according <strong>to</strong> Kantar <strong>Media</strong>.<br />
Today, newspapers are no longer so in <strong>the</strong> traditional sense. They are now news organizations that deliver news in a number of ways, with <strong>the</strong> traditional newspaper<br />
just one venue.<br />
Integration is <strong>the</strong> operative word for some – offering content across print, digital mobile and digital audio. O<strong>the</strong>rs are writing breaking s<strong>to</strong>ries for <strong>the</strong> internet for instant<br />
consumption, <strong>the</strong>n expanding <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ries in<strong>to</strong> more analytical pieces <strong>to</strong> be read in <strong>the</strong> daily print edition.<br />
A bigger fac<strong>to</strong>r for <strong>the</strong> vitality of Spanish-language papers as a whole is <strong>the</strong> increasing dispersion of <strong>Hispanic</strong>s across <strong>the</strong> U.S. in<strong>to</strong> “non-traditional” markets. That has<br />
sparked a need for local advertisers <strong>to</strong> reach those Latinos and – in turn - created opportunities for publishers in those local markets.<br />
While Latino newspapers’ gains have been soft, most executives agree that <strong>the</strong> worst is over and <strong>the</strong> outlook is positive.<br />

With increased audience fragmentation at <strong>Hispanic</strong> radio and television, out-of-home options have grown for marketers. From buses <strong>to</strong> billboards and from Metro<br />
stations <strong>to</strong> transit shelters, Spanish-language messages have increased in frequency from Miami <strong>to</strong> Los Angeles and high-density <strong>Hispanic</strong> markets in between.<br />
Overall budgets remain a fraction of what has been devoted <strong>to</strong> television. Still, <strong>Hispanic</strong> out-of-home advertising is no longer “unnecessary but nice <strong>to</strong> have if <strong>the</strong>re’s a<br />
little extra money in <strong>the</strong> budget,” say industry professionals.<br />

In radio, <strong>the</strong> number of Spanish-language radio stations increased 8 percent from 1,224 in fall 2008 <strong>to</strong> 1,323 in fall 2009 - <strong>the</strong> most recent data available. Univision<br />
continues <strong>to</strong> be <strong>the</strong> major player, with 70 stations drawing roughly 21.7 million listeners per week. Entravision owns 48 stations in <strong>the</strong> U.S. and is <strong>the</strong> second-largest<br />
<strong>Hispanic</strong>-centric radio broadcaster.<br />
Although Spanish-language radio revenues have been hard hit by <strong>the</strong> recession and advertisers’ cutbacks, audience growth continues <strong>to</strong> be a positive trend.<br />
On <strong>the</strong> radio dial, Spanish-language broadcasters settled <strong>the</strong>ir long-running battle with Arbitron’s portable people meter (PPM) and both sides agreed <strong>to</strong> work <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r<br />
<strong>to</strong> improve <strong>the</strong> measurement service’s <strong>Hispanic</strong> methodology. Toge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> groups laid out a series of steps designed <strong>to</strong> increase PPM panelist participation in key<br />
market segments.<br />
On a regional level, Clear Channel, Liberman Broadcasting and CBS Radio have demonstrated particular strengths. In 2010, Bus<strong>to</strong>s <strong>Media</strong>, which owns 28 stations, was<br />
hard hit by financial troubles.<br />
Music formats are no doubt <strong>the</strong> most popular when it comes <strong>to</strong> Spanish-language radio, but talk radio has gotten hot among <strong>Hispanic</strong> listeners and advertisers trying<br />
<strong>to</strong> connect with Latino consumers. Among <strong>the</strong> most popular Spanish-language talk networks are Grupo Latino de Radio (GLR) and ESPN Deportes Radio.<br />
For advertisers trying <strong>to</strong> reach <strong>Hispanic</strong> consumers, a presence on AM and FM stations is still of high value. Radio offers listeners directions and guidance on how <strong>to</strong> buy<br />
things, it has <strong>the</strong> ability <strong>to</strong> connect Latino listeners with <strong>the</strong>ir culture, and radio listeners can catch advertisers’ message no matter where <strong>the</strong>y are.<br />
In addition <strong>to</strong> radio, many marketers are looking for more options on radio - more integration, more remote broadcasts, more DJ endorsements, more online or mobile<br />
tie-ins - anything that can add greater value <strong>to</strong> a traditional over-<strong>the</strong> air spot campaign. For Spanish-language radio station opera<strong>to</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong> more o<strong>the</strong>r media types<br />
available <strong>to</strong> complement a radio campaign, <strong>the</strong> better.<br />

Gone are <strong>the</strong> days when digital media was a nice add-on <strong>to</strong> a brand’s marketing mix for targeting U.S. <strong>Hispanic</strong>s or an expression of an advertiser’s trend-setting<br />

As <strong>Hispanic</strong>s’ media consumption habits evolve, multiplatform offerings, most combining three screens - television, computer and mobile phone, are taking a <strong>to</strong>p spot<br />
on advertisers’ <strong>Hispanic</strong> consumers wish list.<br />
The simplicity of “put up some banners” or “buy some searches” is clearly no longer enough for advertisers looking <strong>to</strong> make <strong>the</strong>ir brands as visible as possible where<br />
and when consumers want <strong>to</strong> see <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
Clients want <strong>to</strong> see a bigger emphasis on <strong>the</strong> mobile and online screens; and with that more cooperation and flexibility from <strong>the</strong> networks for integrations that extend<br />
in<strong>to</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r digital platforms.<br />
Online media <strong>to</strong>o has been impacted by <strong>the</strong> rapidly changing landscape and advertisers’ use of websites and portals. From microsites <strong>to</strong> sponsored portals, demand<br />
from clients for cus<strong>to</strong>mized options is on <strong>the</strong> rise. Two digital formats – video banners and expandable ads – are in <strong>the</strong> midst of a growth spurt.<br />
