Deborah Butterfield Seven Bronze Sculptures
“Butter “Butter eld keeps horses and rides them as frequently as most people drive.
Her work owes some of its power to her bodily connection with its subject matter.
She has not only observed horses in every phase of their lives, she has moved
with them and against them, felt their individual energies and temperaments.”
–Kenneth –Kenneth Baker, San Francisco Chronicle, August 15, 2009
MADROÑO, 2009, unique cast bronze with patina, 86 x 117 x 26 inches
The Greg Kucera Gallery has represented Deborah Butter Butter eld’s work for twenty years.
In that time we have seen her work grow and change in her expressive use of materials
and, more importantly, in the ways the gestural nature of the horse is felt.
In her ninth one-person exhibition with the Greg Kucera Gallery, Butter Butter eld has composed
an installation of seven works in cast bronze for our various indoor and outdoor
spaces. Though Butter Butter eld has been working with horse imagery since the early 1970s,
she has been creating cast bronze work only since the late 1980s.
