as an existential phenomenon, follows the<br />

’ norms or principles of triumphant philosophy.<br />

On the contrary, as Voegelin has<br />

noted, “On the level of pragmatic history,<br />

the philosopher is not the ordering force<br />

of society.” (p. 301). This important point<br />

is well understood even by vulgar people,<br />

who are proud of their physical presence<br />

<strong>and</strong> mere pragmatic persistence in the flow<br />

of human events, <strong>and</strong> who therefore mistakenly<br />

dismiss philosophy as trivial or<br />

impractical.<br />

Yet on the level of enduriqg principle,<br />

in the realm of fundamental ethical norms,<br />

the empirical flow of events has no real<br />

significance; a “synoptic vision of order<br />

<strong>and</strong> history” can only be perceived by the<br />
