Issue 1, 2013
50 Dove Street Horizon Ext. 1
We are well into term one and nearing the end of our first theme. The learners have
settled into their classroom routine and are hard at work.
“Will your child be good at sport?” is an interesting article we found in the Beyond
Potential newsletter that we want to share with you:
Children need to move and be active in many different ways to reach their
full physical development.
Children grow and mature at individual rates.
Children’s motor development progresses through a sequence.
Children need to build on what they know, going from simple to complex.
Locomotor movement:
Movement of the body from place to place is involved in locomotor movement.
Physical abilities such as crawling, walking, hopping, jumping, running, leaping,
galloping and skipping are examples of locomotor movement. This type of
movement helps develop gross-motor skills.
Non-locomotor movement:
Movement of the body while staying in one place is involved in non-locomotor
movement. Physical abilities such as pushing, pulling, twisting, and turning,
wiggling, sitting and rising are examples of non-locomotor movement. This type of
movement helps develop balance and coordination skills.
Manipulative movement:
Movement that involves controlled use of the hands and feet is reflected in
manipulative movement. Physical abilities such as grasping, opening and closing
hands, waving, throwing and catching are examples of manipulative movement. This
type of movement helps develop fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Extra Murals
Extra murals will begin next week. Arts and crafts classes will be held from
14:30 – 15:30 every Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure your child has an
extra set of clothing, an apron and extra food and juice for the afternoon.
Soft ball practice will take place from 14:30 – 15:30 every Thursday afternoon.
Please ensure your child has an extra set of clothing, takkies, a hat, sunblock
and extra lunch and juice for this.
Grade ones may still participate in Be Sharp Beetles and computer classes if
they would like to. Please send enrolment forms if your child will be
participating in either of these.
There will no longer be Experi-Buddies classes as there are no teachers working
in this area. Should this change, we will advise you further.
There will be no piano lessons offered at the moment due to there not being
enough participants.
Weekly Assembly
Beginning this term we decided to hold a small assembly with all our
Grade 1 – 7 learners every Monday morning before the first lesson of
the day. At our weekly assembly one of the teacher’s discusses a topic
of interest or something the learners can work on for the week. To date
topics discussed included: “My Goals for the Year”; “Teasing and
Bullying – Why we should avoid this behaviour” and “Caring for our
Belongings at School.” At the end of our assembly learners from each
class are awarded with either a “Courtesy Badge” or an “Academic
Badge” or a “Book Worm” according to their behaviour and academic
performance during the previous week. Please encourage your children
