TO THE COMMUNITY OF
ST. MARCELLINE
Last weekend during the homily, I shared
what the difference was concerning people
who decide to wear aprons and those who
wear bibs. That was part of the homily as I
was stressing the importance of the ministry
of service, that there is a cost to be a disciple
of the Lord. We see the example of service
when the Lord, on the night before he died,
put on an apron and washed the feet of his
disciples. Christ emphasized the “the Son of
Man did not come to be served, but to serve.”
To be a disciple, we are challenged to wear
aprons, but some people are still more comfortable
in wearing a bib. So what is the difference
between aprons and bibs:
Bibs are for people who only want to be fed.
Bibs are for those who are not yet ready or
willing to feed themselves. Bibs are for those
who are more interested in being served than
in serving. Bibs are for those who insist that
the church exists for them and their needs.
Bibs are for babes in the faith, those who
haven’t caught God’s vision.
Aprons are for those who have a heart to
serve others in Christ’s name. Aprons are for
those who know that they are the church.
Aprons are for those who don’t mind getting
their hands dirty. Aprons are for those who
take the time daily to feed their spiritual hunger.
Aprons are for those who are growing in
faith, and hunger to help others grow. May
God’s grace and peace be yours.
Fr. Hal
KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME
The priests says, “Li
up your hearts.” We say, “We
li them up to the Lord.” In
the Mass, we li or raise up
our hearts to God. We li up
our offering to God. And that
offering is the self-sacrificing
love of Jesus Christ. We join
him and, because we are in him, we can li ourselves up
to God. We are part of the one offering, the one sacrifice.
We can - and somemes do - stay stuck in our
daily struggles, temptaons, and even sins. In the Mass
we break free. In Jesus lied high on the cross, we li
up our hearts, our very selves. We break free of the
gravity of sin and death and doubt.
If you became blind would you ever think about seeing
a priest? Christ’s priesthood, today’s first reading
and Gospel passage indicate, cures both physical and
spiritual blindness.
Think about a time during the Liturgy of the Word
when your eyes were opened, providing you with
an essential insight which you later put into practice.
How did this make you feel?

PRAYER OF THE WEEK
October 28, 2012, Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Almighty ever-living God,
increase our faith, hope and charity,
and make us love what you command,
so that we may merit what you promise.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Reflection question:
How would I change if my faith, hope, and charity were to
increase? How would I behave differently?
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS
“What is the Church if not the assembly of
all the saints?” wrote the fifth-century bishop Niceta.
Each Sunday, in the Profession of Faith, we express
our belief in the communion of saints, the one
body—with Christ as its head—made up of “those
who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being
purified and the blessed in heaven.” We are not
alone!
The preface for All Saints begins, “For today
by your gift we celebrate the festival of your
city, the heavenly Jerusalem, our mother.” What
astounding words! All Saints Day (like every solemnity)
is nothing less than the festival of the fullness
of the paschal mystery, our dying and rising in
Christ. Of course, now in autumn the mystery
comes “clothed” in glorious autumnal garb, and so
we celebrate our Easter faith with signs of the harvest,
signs of nature’s dying, signs of the
“homecoming” that happens naturally when the
weather gets cold and families find themselves together
more often. While the dying can point to our
own mortality, the homecoming reminds us of the
mystery of our own resurrection with Christ.
THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian
exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful
people now return with joy. These are the scattered people
of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and
pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so
that no one will stumble. The Lord’s kindness and mercy
are on all these weak and broken people.
Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely
poetic images of God’s love and care for us. “Those that
sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth
weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall
come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves” (Psalm
126:5–6). Although God had to punish Israel for their
many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they
were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors,
there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in
this the hope and the promise of our own redemption,
gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great
banquet of God.
PRIEST, PROPHET, KING
In the letter to the Hebrews, Jesus is contrasted
with the priests of the First Testament, who, sinful themselves,
had to make sin offerings to God for themselves
as well as for the people. They had to make these offerings
over and over, because people sinned over and over.
But it is different with Christ. He is the High Priest,
Prophet, and King according to the line of Melchizedek.
He is not only the priest who makes the offering, but the
victim whose innocent blood cleanses our sins forever,
so that there is no more need for blood sacrifices. The
one sacrifice of Jesus is enough to cleanse our sins forever,
and we are blessed by God’s loving kindness in
giving us so great a gift.
SON OF DAVID
Bartimaeus, the blind beggar, calls Jesus “Son of
David.” This is significant, because he proclaims prophetically
that Jesus is the one who, in the line of David,
would reign forever over God’s people. At Jesus’ call,
Bartimaeus “sprang up” (Mark 10:50) and boldly asked
Jesus for the gift of sight. We can be bold and confident
that when we ask for good things in faith, Jesus will
have pity on us, too, and grant us what we need to help
bring about the reign of God, which is already among us
in Christ.
After Jesus has restored Bartimaeus’ sight, he
tells him to “go your way” (Mark 10:52). Bartimaeus
chooses to follow Jesus, making Jesus’ Way his own
way. We, too, can ask God to help us see our way, that
we might walk more closely with Christ each day.
