SILENT AUCTION 

When you check in on the big night, you’ll receive 

a bidder number. At the auction, a bid sheet will 

be displayed near each item, with the initial bid 

amount and bid increments indicated. Please 

remember to honor the bid increments during the 

bidding process. Bid increments will vary from item 

to item. To place a bid, write your bidder number 

and the amount of your bid on the sheet. You have 

until right before the table closes to place your final 

bid. (See Order of the Evening on front cover for 

table-closing times). 

LIVE AUCTION 

The auctioneer will open bidding at an item’s 

minimum bid amount at her discretion. To bid on 

an item, raise your hand in the air until the auctioneer 

acknowledges your bid. The highest bidder 

acknowledged by the auctioneer is the winner! 

WINE RAFFLE 

Throughout the evening you will be greeted by our 

great TBA Teens and given the chance to enter our 

fabulous wine raffle. Tickets may be purchased for 

$5 per ticket, $20 for 5 tickets $50 for 20 tickets. 

Put your bidder number on the back of your tickets 

and listen for your number at 7 p.m. when the raffle 

will be held. You need not be present to win. 

BALLOONS 

It’s simple: pay $20 cash or add it to your tab, pop 

a balloon, and you’re a guaranteed winner! Special 

explosions include local restaurant gift certificates, 

yoga gift certificates, and passes to local museums. 

Look for the bouquet of balloons and the TBA Teen

check out the auction sign-up boards for a wide 

variety of events offered by other TBA members. 

Have fun learning to knit or make jewelry, or enjoy 

dinner with a great movie at Chick Flicks! Other 

events include an interactive Israeli Dinner, an 

evening of cocktails and blues, and a women’s hike 

with catered lunch. The number of slots per event is 

limited, so sign up for your special event early! 

ABSENTEE BIDS 

If you would like to bid on something in the 

program, but you won’t be able to attend on 

May 6, you can place an absentee bid on any item. 

Absentee bids will be accepted on all other Silent 

Auction items through Friday, May 4 at noon. 

Absentee bids must include the following information: 

1) name; 2) phone number; 3) item name; 4) item 

number; and 5) the amount of your bid. You can 

submit your bid in writing at the TBA office, or via 

email to virginia@tbaoakland.org. For a written bid, 

please put it in the envelope, and on the outside 

write “Absentee Bid” as well as the date and the 

time you submitted it. Bring your bid to the TBA office 

and put it in the auction absentee bid folder. To 

submit an email bid, please write “Absentee Bid” on 

the subject line, as well as the date and time you are 

sending the email. 

All absentee bids will be opened before the silent 

auction begins. The bidder with the highest bid on 

any particular item will then be entered on the first 

line of the bid sheet. In the event that two identical 

absentee bids are made on the same item, the bidder 

with the earliest bid will be the winner. If at the 

end of the silent auction no other bidder has successfully 

overbid the absentee bid, the person making 

the absentee bid will have purchased the item. 

If your absentee bid is the winning bid, you will be 

notified by an auction committee member following 

the auction. You will be required to pay before 

receiving the item(s).

CHECKOUT PROCEDURES 

How do you know if you’ve won an item? Simply 

look at the bid sheet that has been left on the table 

after that category has been closed. If your bidder 

number is last on the list, it will be circled to indicate 

that you have won. 

I won, I won! Now what? In many cases, the item 

will be available for you to take home with you. 

We’ll bill you for it soon by mail. While we prefer 

to bill you, if your heart is set on checking out on 

the night of the auction, you can do so by writing a 

check or paying by cash at the checkout table in the 

foyer after the conclusion of the Live Auction. 

TABLE CLOSINg ETIQUETTE 

When a table is near closing, there can be some 

competition for popular items. If you really want an 

item bid high and check the bid sheet often. Please 

continue bidding respectfully until the MC announces 

that the table is closed to bidding. Please do not 

attempt to bid after the table-closing announcement. 

Please do not prevent others from bidding while the 

table is still open. If you are having a bidding war, 

continue to bid upwards in larger and larger dollar 

amounts so that you can win.

TAX DEDUCTIONS 

Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed 

by law. While we recommend you consult your tax 

advisor with any questions, we do have a few guidelines 

to share. For those who donated an item(s) to 

the auction, your donation is tax deductible up to 

the fair market value of the item(s). If you are the 

winner of an item(s), any portion you paid over the 

fair market value of the item(s) is considered a taxdeductible 

donation. 

GUIDELINES FOR REDEEMING 

CERTIFICATES 

Buyers are responsible for contacting the donor for 

all items and services. Failure to do so may result in 

the loss of that item. Many items, including certificates 

and passes, have specific use or expiration 

dates. The specific time limitations and restrictions 

mentioned in the item descriptions must be 

adhered to unless later altered by the donor. In any 

case, we ask that all items be used within one year 

of the auction.

Thank you to all of the donors, volunteers and guests 

for helping to celebrate the 12th Anniversary of the TBA 

Schools Auction. It is because of your effort and enthusiasm, 

that this year’s Sunday Night Fever will be a successful 

event! 

Many family members and friends of the Gan Avraham 

and Bet Sefer students put in enormous amounts of time 

soliciting donations, decorating the social hall, cooking 

up savory and sweet dishes and organizing an evening for 

our amazing TBA community. 

Thank you to our educational directors Ruth Morris, 

Director of Gan Avraham Nursery School, and Susan 

Simon, Director of Bet Sefer Religious School and their 

staffs of wonderful teachers. The great work that they 

all love to do not only provides a Jewish education to our 

children, but inspires our kids to make Judaism a part of 

their daily lives even when they are not in the classroom. 

Thank you to the TBA Board of Directors for their constant 

support and encouragement of our schools, staff 

and students, and for making sure our children will 

always have a Jewish environment in which to play, learn 

and grow with their friends. 

This event, and our schools, would not be what they 

are without the TBA Staff, who with their suggestions, 

support and superior work ethic, happily go above and 

beyond what is necessary every day. 

Thank you to the TBA Men’s Club for tending bar tonight 

and for all the ways they support the schools and the 

entire TBA community. From underwriting play structures 

for the Gan to purchasing the plush Torahs for 

Shabbat Mishpacha the contributions of the Men’s Club 

are greatly appreciated. Find out more about their great 

group, and get a drink at the bar at the same time! 

Thank you to the Women of TBA, for the many jobs they 

take on to help make our auction a success. From their 

fabulous event donations to staffing volunteer positions 

tonight, they blend their business experience with their 

commitment to Jewish education at every age. Get to 

know them as they volunteer throughout this event! 

Under the direction of Susan Simon, many of our Bet Sefer 

Students & TBA Teens are helping the night go smoothly 

as runners, raffle ticket and balloon sellers and food distributors. 

Thank you for helping us again this year. 

The B’nai Brith Girls group is providing child care again. 

Not only to do they watch over our children tonight, they 

are part of the B’nai Brith Youth Organization, a teen youth 

group that supports Jewish learning, leadership and service 

and a connection to the larger Jewish community. 

A special thank you goes to Jing Piser, whose culinary 

expertise and creativity make the auction a memorable 

event for everyone. She is fun to work with and makes 

abstract ideas into a very appetizing reality.
