Over 400 alumnae gathered in the Amphitheater
for our 50th Jubilee Mass on Saturday, June
9. Almost every class – from 1965-2012 – was
represented, and many brought along their mothers
or babies! The beautiful liturgy was celebrated by
Damien High School President Fr. Peadar Cronin
with St. Lucy’s student musicians, readings by
alumnae and a procession of gifts that represented
our 50 excellent years of educating young women.
Our gym, built in 1981 but new to many of our
guests, featured a history walk, memorabilia display,
video montage and champagne brunch. The first
Classes of ’65 & ’66 treated us to an impromptu
conga line to tunes from the past fifty years. Veronica
Brias Kummerfeldt ’80, our 50th Anniversary
chairperson, paid tribute to the dedication of
the Benedictine Sisters with gifts to Sr. Monica
Collins, Sr. Helen Dziuk and Sr. Elizabeth Brown.
Alumnae are all welcome to join us at
our next events – a 50th Jubilee Mass and
Celebration Dinner on Saturday, September
22 at 5:30 in our amphitheater, or to our
Golden Boutique, on Sunday, November 4.

Elizabeth Louise VonTersch,
born on March 9, 1930 to
Francis and Berta Blum
VonTersch, in Defiance,
IA. She enjoyed life with 3
brothers. Eugene, Bob and
Dean; and 7 sisters Mildred,
Joyce, Darlene, Bonnie,
Maxine, Marie and Carol.
IN MEMORIAM
Elizabeth left home and
entered the Benedictine Sisters
of Atchison, KS in June,
1947 where she made her first profession in December, 1948
and her final Profession in January, 1952. During her time as a
Benedictine, Sr. Elizabeth taught in Kansas. During the summer
of 1952, she transferred to
California, served in elementary
schools in Coronado, Chula Vista
and San Ysidro. In 1961-62, Sr.
Elizabeth traveled back to Mt. St.
Scholastica College as a student
and returned to teach in Covina.
From 1965, Elizabeth taught at
St. Lucy’s Priory High School for
the next 10 years, mostly Biology
and Chemistry. In the 1975-76
school year Sr. Elizabeth taught at
Bishop Amat in West Covina. She
returned to St. Lucy’s in 1980 and
1968
taught biology and religion and served as Campus Minister.
After St. Lucy’s, Elizabeth spent a year in Seattle University in a
Theology Renewal Program. Upon returning, Sr. Elizabeth was
Director of Parish Ministry at St. Theresa’s Parish San Diego, and
catechetical Ministry in St. Vincent’s and Sacred Heart Coronado.
Sr. Elizabeth loved traveling and seeing her family at reunions.
In her later years, Sr. Elizabeth was overcome by Alzheimer’s and
became dependent. She responded to love and care graciously,
and she saw beauty in people and things surrounding her. Sister
Elizabeth VonTersch died peacefully on March 6th, and was
buried on her birthday, March 9, 2012.

Sister Mary Bride Gormley, St.
Lucy’s Priory High School faculty
member 1966 - 68 and principal
1970-73, died peacefully August
13, 2012 after a brief illness. Sister
Mary Bride also served as prioress
of the community 1978-82.
Sister Mary Bride was a
Benedictine community member
for seventy years entering Mount
St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kansas
where she attended college.
Sister Mary Bride first served in
California 1948-50, returned briefly to the midwest and
then became a founding member of St. Lucy’s Priory after
returning to California in 1953.
In addition to her service to St.
Lucy’s High School, Sister Mary
Bride was the Dean of Girls at
Bishop Amat High School, an
elementary school principal at
Sacred Heart School, Coronado,
St. John’s, Baldwin Park and most
recently St. Charles Borromeo,
North Hollywood. After retiring
from administration in 2000,
Sister Mary Bride continued to
assist with a variety of school
1968 activities at St. Charles until
2011.
St. Mary Bride’s funeral was held at St. Charles Borromeo,
North Hollywood August 21 allowing former students
and parishioners to join with St. Lucy’s Community in
celebrating her life.
Maxine Gordon, mother of Jeanette Gordon Morello ’69,
grandmother of Kelly Gordon Mullan ’91, mother-in-law of
Susie Beahm Gordon ’69. Maxine was a long-time friend to
the Benedictine Sisters and her volunteer efforts helped to
establish the school.

Our 50th Anniversary year has been a success in
bringing the St. Lucy’s family together in different ways.
It all started with our Golden BASH Dinner & Auction
on March 31. Over 500 guests gathered to celebrate!
Veronica Brias Kummerfeldt, ’80 is chairing our
festivities as well as serving as our first alumnae Parents
Club President with her super involved husband Steve,
Our BASH net profit was $147,168.00 and the evening
also featured a Proclamation from City of Glendora
Mayor, Gene Murabito and Mayor Pro Tem, Joe Santoro.

STARLIGHT SERENADE
50 years of memories continued at our Starlight Serenade in
April, featuring retro musical numbers and a historical video
with alumnae comments and some surprise performers (see
below).

TIME CAPSULE
For our last 50th event, St. Lucy’s students from ’12-
’16 have been preparing a “time capsule” to bury on
December 13, the Feast of St. Lucy. It will contain
objects that symbolize the Regent community for
five decades and will include class bracelets, an
ASB picture book, a Lucy doll, an iPhone and an
autographed book of all current students and faculty.

Life’s Winding Road
Jennifer Boulahoud ’10 is a student at USC majoring in
Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Psychology. Jennifer
was a basketball player at St. Lucy’s, but was seriously injured
in a sledding accident her junior year. She suffered a spinal
cord injury and was told she would not walk again. During
physical therapy, her competitive instincts “turned into an
intense motivation to not only walk, but to play again.” Jennifer
received the Swim With Mike Scholarship for physically
challenged athletes at USC. Jennifer continues physical therapy,
and can now walk short distances. She hopes to “become a
psychologist or researcher who inspires others to meet their
challenges.” www.swimwithmike.org.
Marisabel Agosto ’09 is a senior at Brown Univ. Last
year she studied abroad at the Univ. of Bologna in Italy,
where she learned Italian and decided to pursue a career in
International Politics. She has interned for the Chairman of
the Environmental & Health committee at the Rhode Island
State House. During the summer, she was in New York and
Washington D.C. as the only student chosen to work for
the United Nations Populations Fund Report on women’s
reproductive health in developing countries.
Angelina Viola ’06 is a social worker in Santa Maria. She
has a BS in Sociology from Westmont College.
Charize Apostol ’05 recently co-produced an independent
feature length film called “Red.”
Lindsay Van Lund ’03 works in Human Resources for
Target. She has a degree in Apparel Merchandising &
Management from Cal Poly Pomona.
Stacey Nuveman-Deniz ‘96 has been inducted into the
U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in Chicago. A four-time UCLA
All-American and winner of 2 gold and 1 bronze Olympic
medals in softball. Stacey is currently a softball coach at
San Diego State Univ.

New High School Schedule
A seventh period has been added to the St. Lucy’s school
day, prompted by a Science requirement for Freshmen, who
will now take Physical Science. Upperclassmen also have
new electives from which to choose including California
Literature and History, Computer Science, World Religions,
Music Theory, World Geography, Women in Literature,
Environmental Science, World History Honors and
Statistics.

Sister Mary Bride first served in
California 1948-50, returned briefly to the midwest and
then became a founding member of St. Lucy’s Priory after
returning to California in 1953.
In addition to her service to St.
Lucy’s High School, Sister Mary
Bride was the Dean of Girls at
Bishop Amat High School, an
elementary school principal at
Sacred Heart School, Coronado,
St. John’s, Baldwin Park and most
recently St. Charles Borromeo,
North Hollywood. After retiring
from administration in 2000,
Sister Mary Bride continued to
assist with a variety of school
1968 activities at St. Charles until
2011.
St. Mary Bride’s funeral was held at St. Charles Borromeo,
North Hollywood August 21 allowing former students
and parishioners to join with St. Lucy’s Community in
celebrating her life.
Maxine Gordon, mother of Jeanette Gordon Morello ’69,
grandmother of Kelly Gordon Mullan ’91, mother-in-law of
Susie Beahm Gordon ’69. Maxine was a long-time friend to
the Benedictine Sisters and her volunteer efforts helped to
establish the school.
