Dear Parishioners,
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
October 4th, 2009
We have flipped another page of the calendar and are in a new month. On this first Sunday of
October the Church in America focuses on the need to respect life in all of its forms. One of the great tragedies of
our time is abortion. Whenever I pass an abortion clinic I am reminded of the words of Jesus on the cross, “Father
forgive them for they know not what they do.”
While disrespect for the sacredness of life in the womb is so prevalent in our time, abortion is not
the only life issue being attacked in society today. There are so many issues that cry out for justice. Right now in the
State of New Jersey our legislature is poised to give a new definition of what marriage is and if new legislation is
passed, it will have detrimental effects on society’s social and spiritual fabric. On the international scene, there are
the problems of world hunger, population, poverty, war and peace, inequitable distribution of goods and quickly
diminishing natural resources. Nationally, our country continues to wrestle with the economy, unemployment,
health care and all kinds of moral and social injustices. Even here in our own community where there are so many
different races, language and cultures, prejudice is not unknown to rear its ugly head.
Even though most of us may not be perpetrators directly of society’s evils, our personal and
spiritual lives are affected by them. Living in an atmosphere where sin is paraded as virtue, our sensitivity to what is
happening around us is often diminished. It is like breathing polluted air and trying to convince ourselves it is fresh.
A most important ingredient for bringing about change in society is changing our own attitudes. For this we need
quiet time and reflective space in prayer. By allowing the Lord to touch our lives we may find just how serious
Jesus is when He says, “Come all you who are weary and find life burdensome and I will refresh you.”
Sincerely yours,
MAKING READING THE SCRIPTURES A PART OF OUR LIFE
Using the Scriptures as family prayer is a good way to prepare for Sunday Mass. Each week under the
Pastor’s Letter are the Scripture Readings which will be proclaimed at the upcoming Sunday Liturgy.
Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time – October 11th
Wis 7:7-11; Heb 4:12-13; Mk 10:17-30 or 10:17-27
ON THE COVER OF THE BULLETIN
The picture on the cover of the bulletin today is that of St. Francis of Assisi. It is an original painting which
hangs on the wall of Monsignor Tracy’s office in the Parish Center. It was painted by a local artist, Frederick
Reinger, from Glassboro, NJ and Monsignor received it as a gift from the artist’s family at the time of his funeral.
The amazing thing about the painting is that there are over 30 images of animals portrayed most of them hidden and
could go unnoticed without studying the painting.
The reason for the picture of St. Francis on the bulletin cover today is that this Sunday is his feast day. St.
Francis lived in the 12th century but even today his popularity is evident. After the 11:00 a.m. Mass this Sunday
there will be a special blessing for animals in the All Saints Prayer Garden at 1:00 p.m..
STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
“The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of
the air, and all wild animals, but none proved to be
the suitable partner for the man.” (Genesis 2:20)
The creation story reminds us that from the
very beginning of time God put the entire world into
our care. We are called God’s Stewards – offering our
service and sacrifice for the benefit of all.
CHARLIE’S ANGELS
Wednesday of the month (except July & August). Our
OUR LADY OF HOPE SCHOOL –
CELEBRATES THE FEAST OF ST. FRANCIS
Our First Friday liturgy was a special
celebration of the Feast of St. Francis.
Our 5th Grade class did a fabulous job in helping to
plan and participate in the mass which was celebrated
by Father Cal LaVerde from Sts. Peter and Paul
Church.
Students from Kindergarten through 8th
grade attend mass on First Friday each month during
the school year. There are also special liturgies that
are celebrated for holy days, feast days, and holidays
during the year. Parents and grandparents are always
welcome and invited to join us for these special
celebrations.
RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY TODAY
For over thirty years, the Catholic Church in the
United States has celebrated Respect Life Sunday on this
weekend, October 3 and October 4. The theme this year is
Every Child Brings Us God’s Smile.
Our respect for life must include working to
defend the institution of marriage as a sacred union
between one man and one woman. It also compels us to
work to provide health care for all in a way that does not
include procedures such as abortion or euthanasia and that
provides a conscience clause for health care workers.
As you know, the Respect Life Collection is the
primary source of funding for our Respect Life activities
and initiatives. Your sacrificial financial support and
prayers will help us respond to our vocational call to testify
to “Christ’s charity. The Collection will be taken up this
weekend.
FAITH DIRECT IS A WAY TO HELP
If you would like an easy way to let us know that
you support us even when you can’t come to St. Charles
Church, we have what is known as Faith Direct whereby
your Sunday offering is done electronically. You simply
sign up for the program and designate the amount to be
offered each week as part of your stewardship of treasure
in the Offertory Collection. For more information visit the
website at www.faithdirect.net or contact the Parish Center
Office at 629-0411.
The annual winter outerwear drive, sponsored by
the Society of Saint Vincent DePaul, will start Saturday,
October 3rd, and continue through Sunday, October 25.
Collection bins will be located on the ramp side of the
church and in the lobby of the Whitman drive parking lot
entrance. Winter outerwear can include: coats, jackets,
hats, gloves, and scarves. All donations should be clean
and in wearable condition.
This year, we have also been asked, by one of our
parishioners stationed at a military hospital in Afghanistan,
to donate men’s pants and two-piece pajamas for members
of the Afghan police and army who sustain wounds. We
are advised that most of the men in Afghanistan are small
in stature and girth, but any size donated will do. The
Society of Saint Vincent DePaul is grateful for your
continued support.
"DINNERS" NEEDED
Since Cathedral Kitchen is no longer accepting
casseroles, we now give your "dinners" to those in our area
that need food that have ovens to heat them. Most of the
families that we help like your "dinners" very much and
feel connected to you for this outpouring of help. Some
even ask for "dinners" by the name of the chef on the label.
So, consider making dinner for a family in our community
who needs some help.
Casserole pans and lids are available in the foyers
of the church. Frozen casseroles are collected on the
second Tuesday of the month 12:30-1PM and the Monday
evening before from 7-8PM at the Religious Ed Center.
The next collection dates are: October 12 th & 13 th
OUTDOOR MOVIE TURNED INDOOR
STILL A HIT!
About 110 people came with beach chairs,
blankets and bean bags chairs to our 2nd Annual Outdoor
Movie night. We moved inside with the threat of rain and
watched “Race to Witch Mountain!” Children and parents
munched on pizza, popcorn, cotton candy and other snacks
as we all stayed cozy on a miserable night. Get set for
another one in January!
