The most brilliant innovation is one that provides a solution before others even recognize a need. That’s what happened
when the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) opened its doors in 1977. Despite decades of overwhelming
popularity, the electric guitar had been virtually ignored by college-level music programs. GIT provided exactly the
kind of education guitarists everywhere had been dreaming about, and virtually overnight it became the number-one
destination for serious guitarists throughout the world.
The spirit of innovation that began with GIT continues to this day. MI’s practical, experience-based approach to contemporary
music education has expanded to include a wide range of instruments and specialties, and MI continues

Another MI innovation, the Associate of
Arts in Performance (Combined Emphasis)
merges four quarters of instrument training
with two quarters of intensive studies
in Music Business, Audio Engineering,
Independent Artist Development, Film, or
Guitar Craft. You can also combine two
or more emphases to design your own
degree.
Associate of Arts in Performance (Combined
Emphasis): 6 quarters/90 credits
MusIc InDusTry cerTIfIcATe ProGrAMs
MI offers a variety of Certificate programs
in non-performing music industry fields
including Audio Engineering, Music Business,
Independent Artist Development,
Guitar-Making, and Film. Program lengths
vary from two quarters/30 units to three
quarters/45 units depending on the area of
emphasis, and may be taken alone or combined
with Performance programs to earn
an Associate Degree.
Other performance options include the
certificate in Performance (four quarters of
intensive performance-based training), encore
(design your own ten-week, non-certificate program),
and summer shot (a one-week immersion
in MI-style performance education). Contact

facilities might get loud – around every
corner, drummers by the dozens practice in

The Drum Program at MI (originally the Percussion
Institute of Technology) has earned
its reputation as the world’s foremost contemporary
drum school based on a unique
system of performance-based education.
During classes, labs, and private lessons you
absorb each new technique or concept with
your drumsticks in hand, and the learning
cycle isn’t complete until you put it to work on
the drum kit under actual performing conditions.

hands-on playing opportunities for drummers,

MI’s Artist and Career Services Department is
dedicated to helping you make the transition
from student to professional as seamless as
possible. ACS staff is ready to help you with
internship placement, job and gig referrals,
and career planning. MI’s exclusive Hiring
Hall talent showcase puts you at the front of
the line with auditions for artists, producers,
labels and managers. Club booking and song
placement services help you open doors
without beating your head against them. The
music business is highly competitive and MI
can’t guarantee you a job, but our goal is to
be part of your support group from the time
you begin classes through the rest of your
professional life.
