Institute of
Technology
1977
The most brilliant innovation is one that provides a solution before others even recognize a need. That’s what happened
when the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) opened its doors in 1977. Despite decades of overwhelming
popularity, the electric guitar had been virtually ignored by college-level music programs. GIT provided exactly the
kind of education guitarists everywhere had been dreaming about, and virtually overnight it became the number-one
destination for serious guitarists throughout the world.
The spirit of innovation that began with GIT continues to this day. MI’s practical, experience-based approach to contemporary
music education has expanded to include a wide range of instruments and specialties, and MI continues
to develop new approaches to education for a rapidly changing world.
When you’re surrounded by the best in your field, it changes your whole
first – maybe you were the most talented one in your circle and now you’re
surrounded by people who were also the best in theirs – but that feeling is
Designed by brilliant guitarist and educator
Howard Roberts, the Guitar Program at
Musicians Institute (originally the GIT) is the
standard by which contemporary guitar education
is measured throughout the world.
MI’s reputation is based on a practical,
proven system for developing professionallevel
skill and musicianship. Integrated
classes, private lessons, specialty clinics,
and performance workshops teach you how
to erase technical barriers and organize
your understanding of the guitar neck so
you can access any scale, interval, or chord
in any position. You learn the structures and
concepts behind contemporary music and
immediately apply them to the instrument
under real-world performing conditions
with guidance from experienced, expert
instructors.
Classes and private lessons are just the beginning
– on any given day you can play for
hours during Open Counseling with some of
the world’s greatest guitarists and then get
up on stage in Live Performance Workshops
and find out what you really know. MI
is a total-immersion education in the music
you love, and as thousands of grads can
testify, there is simply no better place on
earth to prepare for your future
as a guitarist.

BASS
BACHElor DEgrEE ASSoCIATE DEgrEE CErTIfICATE NoN-CErTIfICATE SUMMEr

Singers and guitar players may get the
spotlight, but bass players get the work.
For a bassist with the technical skill,
musicianship, stylistic range and playing
experience that come from a first-class
music education, the hardest question
might be not how to get gigs, but which
ones to turn down.
The Bass Program at Musicians Institute
(originally the Bass Institute
of Technology) is the world’s premier
program for professional electric bassists.
MI’s reputation rests on a proven
system for rapid development of technique
and musicianship combined with
unparalleled opportunities for practical
playing experience.
As an MI Bass student, skills and ideas
you learn in the classroom are put right
to work on stage – you don’t just learn
about an idea, you capture the feel
under your fingers.
MI’s outstanding bass instructors can
not only train you in virtually any style or
technique of contemporary bass playing,
but also provide the sort of practical
performing and career advice that
only comes with years of experience. If
a career as a performing bassist is your
goal, there’s no better place to launch it
than at Musicians Institute.
DrUMS
A walk through the halls of MI’s Drum Program
facilities might get loud – around every
corner, drummers by the dozens practice in
private labs, groove together in class, or trade
fills side-by-side. It’s a lot for a visitor to take
in, but for a drummer it sounds like home.
The Drum Program at MI (originally the Percussion
Institute of Technology) has earned
its reputation as the world’s foremost contemporary
drum school based on a unique
system of performance-based education.
During classes, labs, and private lessons you
absorb each new technique or concept with
your drumsticks in hand, and the learning
cycle isn’t complete until you put it to work on
the drum kit under actual performing conditions.
No other program offers such an array of
hands-on playing opportunities for drummers,
on stage and in the studio, with personal
guidance from a renowned faculty of expert
drummer-educators. If your goal is to be a
player, there’s no need to wait until school is
over; at MI, you’re a player from the day
you begin.
A professional contemporary keyboardist is a multi-tasker by definition. Playing the keys is only the beginning – a new generation of technology
behind the keys has multiplied the keyboardist’s role to include composer, arranger, engineer, and producer. The electronic keyboard is a
new category of instrument that has created a new set of skills and the need for a new kind of education: the Keyboard Technology Program at
Musicians Institute.
MI’s unique Keyboard Technology Program combines training in keyboard technique, live performing experience, and intensive studies in digital
tools for composing, arranging, and recording. You learn acoustic and electronic keyboard performance skills and stylistic grooves along with
synthesizer programming and virtual instrument applications. Put your techniques and knowledge to work on stage, in the lab, and in the studio
under the guidance of a diverse faculty including some of the most respected keyboard professionals in Los Angeles. Whether you’re a piano
player looking to explore digital realms or an electronic musician who wants to take it to the stage, MI’s unique Keyboard Technology Program is
a keyboard education for the real world.

Singers seeking an advanced contemporary
vocal education have traditionally had only
two choices: either take a detour through a
college musical theater or opera program,
or attempt to find answers and overcome
obstacles on your own. Now there is a third
choice; a direct path to your goals as a
contemporary vocalist: the Vocal Program at
Musicians Institute.
As an MI vocal student you learn how to sing,
not what to sing. You take the vocal range,
power, and confidence developed in your
private lessons and classrooms directly to the
live stage and recording studio, singing the
music you love under the guidance of working
professional vocalists. Focus your artistic
vision as you master vocal technique, develop
your songwriting skills and record your own
music, learn to use modern music technology,
and find out how the entertainment industry
really works. Exclusive original performance
showcases and professional artist auditions
let you display your talent in front of industry
decision-makers, while MI’s international
creative community of musicians and music
professionals provides unlimited opportunities
for networking.
If you’re a contemporary singer looking for an
education designed to match your music, this
is it. The shortest path between your voice
and your career runs right through MI.

Music careers are built on more than technical skill and creativity - as in all professional fields, the phone won’t start
to ring until your peers and potential employers are confident that you can deliver effective and consistent results.

MI’s Artist and Career Services Department is
dedicated to helping you make the transition
from student to professional as seamless as
possible. ACS staff is ready to help you with
internship placement, job and gig referrals,
and career planning. MI’s exclusive Hiring
Hall talent showcase puts you at the front of
the line with auditions for artists, producers,
labels and managers. Club booking and song
placement services help you open doors
without beating your head against them. The
music business is highly competitive and MI
can’t guarantee you a job, but our goal is to
be part of your support group from the time
you begin classes through the rest of your
professional life.
SUCCESS
STorIES
Claims mean
little unless they’re
backed by results.
In MI’s case, that
means looking at
what students do
in the years following
graduation. MI
can’t claim sole
responsibility for
the success of
highly motivated,
talented students
– no school can –
but we’re justifiably
proud when they
come back and tell
us that MI gave
them the foundation
and push they
needed to get their
careers on track.
