Public Transport
Buses, trolley buses, trams and the metro train are Budapest’s options.
Tickets, that are interchangeable between all forms of transport, may be
purchased from vending machines located at bus/ tram stops and train
stations. Tickets are valid for time durations and you may find it more
economical to buy daily or 48/ 72 hour tickets. Once you have purchased
your ticket you must validate it when you get on the bus/ tram/ train by
having it stamped in the orange ticket machine.
Be aware that ticket inspectors may wish to examine your ticket to check
it’s validity. If you do not have a ‘stamped’
or appropriate ticket you will be fined.
Budapest Transport Limited (BKV) have an
is Hungarian. English
tends to be spoken by service
staff and by younger people
(they learn 2 or 3 languages
at school!).
Currency
The currency in Hungary is the Hungarian Forint. You can find it displayed
as ‘Ft’ or ‘HUF’.
Currency Exchange Offices
Exchange booths can be found all over the city’. Also there are plenty of
ATMs and as many modern day cards can be used world-wide, this is
probably the easiest way to obtain local cash.
Drinking Water
The water supply in Budapest is safe to
drink, however you may prefer bottled
water for reasons of taste.
Shopping Hours
Hungarian shops generally
open 10:00 – 18:00 Mon – Fri
and 10:00 – 13:00 on Saturdays.
Some supermarkets and
shopping centres are open
longer.
Tipping
Generally, in restaurants, a
service charge is included.
Anything extra is up to you but
the norm is 10% and is expected.
Students
Students may obtain discounts
at museums etc. when showing
their International Student
Identity Card (ISIC). Therefore
it’s well worth having it with
you.
Crime and Pickpockets
Common sense must
prevail here. Hungary is a
safe country to travel in.
However, be aware of
your surroundings and
take extra care when
walking around at night.
Always keep wallets and
purses out of sight particularly
whilst travelling
by public transport. Avoid
poorly lit areas and suspicious
