HIGHLAND PARK — Movie
lovers can enjoy a fresh look at
a film classic when "Goodbye,
Columbus" is shown at 8 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 28 in Borough
Hall, 221 S. Fifth Ave.
J. Hoberman, senior film critic of
the Village Voice, will speak
immediately after the screening.
The program inaugurates the
fifth annual Jewish Film Series of
the Highland Park Conservative
Temple and Center.
Philip Roth's National Book
Award-winning "Goodbye,
Columbus" introduced a new
and controversial voice in
Jewish-American literature.
When it was adapted for the
screen in 1969 the novel was no
less Jewish and equally controversial
in its ethnicity.
Neil Klugman (Richard
Benjamin, in his first movie) is a
poor and unambitious librarian
from the Bronx. He is attracted
to a sexy Jewish-American
Princess (Ali MacGraw) and
charms his way into her wealthy
family's house for the summer.
That season ends with a huge
wedding reception filmed in
detail in all its lavish vulgarity. As
fall comes the couple must reckon
with the challenges ihat sexuality,
gender and class privilege
Buono
pushes
menu
disclosure
EDISON — State Sen. Barbara
Buono, D-18th, is proposing a bill
which would require retail food
establishments to list adjacent to
each food or beverage item on a
standard printed menu the nutritional
content for foods usually
prepared and offered for sale.
While nutritional labeling is
currently required on processed
and packaged foods, restaurants
where food and drink are prepared
and sold are required to
provide nutritional information
only when a health claim is made
for a food or beverage item listed
on a menu.
According to a recent study
published in the American
Journal of Public Health, 64 percent
of American adults are
either overweight or obese. The
rising prevalence of obesityrelated
diseases has been
blamed, in part, on the increased
consumption of foods prepared
outside the home. The study also
reported that while the precise
number of deaths attributable to
obesity is difficult to estimate,
obesity is a major cause of preventable
death. Consumers
spend more than $400 billion
annually on restaurant expenditures.
"The increased purchase of
food prepared outside the home
and the rising number of
Americans who are overweight
have made the disclosure of the
nutritional content of restaurant
foods a significant public health
issue," Buono said. "This bill will
enable families to make educated
decisions on the types of food
they eat when dining outside the
home and help reduce the incidence
of obesity and other related
health problems."
This study also revealed that
consumers substantially underestimated
calorie levels for lesshealthful
foods. Preference for
unhealthy foods diminished
COURTESY MIDDLESEX COUNTY COLLEGE
Middlesex County Freeholder Director David Crabiel, right, talks about the new associate
degree nursing program being offered as a partnership between Middlesex County
College and Raritan Bay Medical Center.
MCC, medical center
to offer nurse program
EDISON — Middlesex County College
and Raritan Bay Medical Center have
developed a new associate degree nursing
program that will admit 110 prospective
nurses each year.
The students will take classes at
Middlesex and participate in clinical
experiences at the medical center.
The first class will be admitted in the
fall of 2007. The degree will be from
Middlesex County College; graduates
will receive their nursing pin from
Raritan Bay.
This new associate degree program will
replace the Charles E. Gregory diploma
program at Raritan Bay, which takes
three years to complete, as well as a
smaller program the College is running.
"This is an extremely exciting development
for us," said Middlesex President
Joann La Perla-Morales. "It is of great
benefit to all. First, the program can be
completed in two years. Second, the
graduates will be receiving an associate's
degree, which is an advantage as
they move up the career ladder."
La Perla-Morales said the College
anticipated developing articulation
agreements with four-year colleges and
universities with Bachelor's in Nursing
programs so that Middlesex graduates
could transfer into those programs as
juniors.
At its regular meeting Thursday, Oct. 5>,
the Middlesex County Board of Chosen
Freeholders passed a resolution to officially
offer its support for the partnership.
Freeholder Director David Crabiel
praised the partnership.
"With the encouragement of
Freeholder John Pulomena, Middlesex
County College has aggressively pursued
this relationship with Raritan Bay
Medical Center to enhance its nursing
program,*' he said. "The educational
opportunities at Middlesex County
College will unsure that qualified, talented
students will meet the nvtrrincreasing
healthcare needs of our area
residents. Middlesex County College will
Ferguson or Stender?
By ALLISON Kl.YKK GUALTIER1
Start Writer
As election season heats tip, one of the
biggest races in the area is for U.S.
Congress in District 7, where incumbent
Congressman Mike Ferguson, a
Republican, is facing off against
Democratic challenger Assemblywoman
Linda Stender, former mayor of Fanwood
and Union County Freeholder and current
member of the state assembly.
During roundtable discussions with
each, Ferguson and Stender outlined
their campaign issues. Each is trying to
gamer support in the district, which
stretches across Hunterdon, Somerset,
Union and Middlesex counties.
"I think that there's a strong sentiment
out there," said Stender, noting that people
want change. "I'm the toughest challenge
thai Mike Ferguson has ever
faced."
Ferguson said that his constituents
respect his record, especially on taxes,
which he termed the race's biggest issue.
"When we're lowering taxes in
Washington, because of our incomes.
New Jersey benefits more than anyone
else in the country," he said. "High taxes
hurt us more than anyone else."
With the recent budget troubles in the
.state, Ferguson said he is working on the
federal level to reduce the federal
income tax burden on New Jersey residents.
While he pointed to his action in biini!ing
federal funds to his district for the
Green Brook Flood Control Project and
the Route 22 Corridor Project, he said
that supporting las cuts was the host way
to help .state residents, and not just making
sure federal money comes back to
the state.
Stender, who said she did not support
Gov, Jon Commas budget with its attendant
tax increases, pointed to educational
spending as the largest chunk of residents'
tax bills, a component linked to
the federal No Child Left Behind law
requiring standardized testing.
"To my mind, either we fund =', or we
disband it. In New Jersey, we have a good
public education system," she said, noting
that proper funding for special education
in particular is necessary to providing
tax relief.
Stender also pointed to the luck of
funding for New Jersey under current
federal transportation policy as a problem
for state residents. She tiled funding
for infrastructure and the need for more
emphasis on mass transit instead of for
highways.
Stender also pointed out thai she is
pro-choice, and said that as ,i woman in
state politics, she has shown ability to
work with parties and "the bit; boy*."
"People see that as a change from the
old ways," she said. 'Tm fierce on the
topic of women's rights."
Conover, from Ringoes, literally
had his fantasy to play
in a band wailing for him
right across the street from
his house. He said one afternoon
in 2003, he visited his
neighbor, Caruana, and
noticed he had a drum set —
so he sat down and gave it a
try.
"He said 'I'll keep you in
mind if I ever start a band,'"
Conover recalled.
The rest is history for a guy
who would never have gotten
the chance to learn to play
drums if he hadn't been per-
sistent.
"My parents said 'No, we
don't want a drum in the
house,'" said Conover, recalling
the conversation he had
with his folks when he was in
the fifth grade. Instead, his
parents pushed him toward
trumpet, what his cousin
played.
"I couldn't get a note out of
that trumpet," he said. "My
parents finally gave in."
He played the snare drum
in school band up until his
junior year at Montgomery
High School — then, true to
his full time profession
today, gave it up for sports,
though over the years he
would bang away on a set in
his basement.
EDISON — Easter Seals of
New Jersey recently honored
state Sen. Barbara Buono (D-
18th DLst.) for her leadership
in sponsoring S-487, a bill
offering tax credit incentives
for businesses that employ
developmental^ 1 disabled individuals.
She was presented the
Easter " Seals' 2006
Distinguished Service Award
to recognize her efforts assisting
Easter Seals and other
nonprofit organizations find
jobs for the developmentally
disabled.
"For organizations like
Easter Seals, it is becoming
increasingly difficult to find
companies willing to hire the
developmentally disabled individuals
who work in their sheltered
workshops," Buono said.
"Competition from factories
located abroad where wages
are drastically lover has dramatically
decreased the potential
for contracting with local
companies. These tax credits
will allow those nonprofits running
sheltered workshops to
be an economically viable
option for local businesses
when contracting product
assembly and packaging services."
Easter Seals seeks to empower
individuals with developmental
disabilities to lead more
independent lives. Nationally,
Easter Seals serves more than
1 million adults and children
with disabilities ami their
families through a nationwide
network of more than 450 service
sites. In New Jersey the
.organization itself provides
work for over 700 people in
three locations.
The legislation has also
enabled nearly 3,400 individuals
to seek employment
through separate not-for-profit,
community-based organizations.
Buono began advocating for
the tax credits in 2002 after
touring the Easter Seals sheltered
workshop in New
Brunswick. In early 2006 this
legislation was signed into law.
Her hard work on the passage
BERNARDSVILLE — The
foundations are finished and
the framing and sheathing are
going up on two duplexes on
Mine Brook Road near the
southern border of
Bernardsville.
When complete, the duplexes
will become the homes of
four low-income families chosen
by the Raritan Valley
Habitat for Humanity.
Earlier this month, more
than 10 volunteers clad in
jeans, sweatshirts and sneak-
ers or boots from the Phillips-
Van Heusen office in
Bridgewater donned navy blue
construction helmets as they
dismantled scaffolding from
one of the building skeletons.
"Next we'll do shingling and
siding," said Sue Duffy, a project
manager with Habitat for
Humanity. "We want to get the
exterior closed up by
November-December."
On the southern most
duplex, where currently only
the lower level is framed, volunteers
swept water and
leaves left by recent rainstorms
off the ground floor. In
the coming weeks, workers
will put down the floor joists
for the upstairs and frame out
the second level. Then, too.
that building will be sheathed
with Oriented Strand Board -
a type of engineered plywood.
"We're pretty much on
schedule," Duffy said. "As long
as we have enough people,
we'll finish up on time."
Families are expected to
move in to the homes in late
spring. However, there is much
more work to be done before
the keys will be turned over.
"When we finish the exterior,
we'll move to the inside,"
Duffy said. "We'll install insulation,
sheetrock the walls,
wiring, put down the floor and
carpeting."
The organization welcomes
financial, material and labor
donations for its projects.
"We'll do the electrical ourselves,
we've got a plumber
lined up," Duffy said. "Green
Brook stairs is donating all the
stairs — eight sets. We could
use carpet or flooring."
Since the project started in
June, hundreds of volunteers
have given their time to give
needy families a home. Though
their goals are the tasks at
hand, which included clearing
the site, installing retention
walls, laying foundations,
framing and sheathing, the
volunteers have come away
with a sense of pride and a
new bond with fellow workers.
"We get a lot of corporate
groups," Duffy said.
Employees of area businesses
leam more about their colleagues
they would behind a desk or
"We get to interact with
each other on a different
an employee in the human
resources department at
Phillips-Van Heusen. "It's fun
"You get to know your
a Phillips-Van Heusen employee
who has volunteered at a
few Habitat for Humanity projects.
"In past (Habitat) experiences,
I got to hear stories
about what kind of projects
my coworkers were working on
at their houses."
Additionally, lending a hand
with Habitat for Humanity
teaches volunteers skills they
can use at their own homes.
"I put down a deck at the
Manville house," Lentzsch
said, recalling a past Habitat
volunteer experience. "I'm
going to put on a deck at rny
I want to."
"We're about 15 to 20 percent
we're about 25 to 30 percent
done with that one," said Site
Warren is the scene for Polish cuisine
By AMY S. BOBROWSKI
Staff Writer
WARREN — Ed Nawracaj made about 1,800
pierogi by hand in 2005.
This year, the owner of Scarpellino's Restaurant
will likely break that record. The Italian and Polish
eatery, located at 168 Mount Bethel Road, is serving
up traditional Polish cuisine the fourth weekend
of every month. The next Polish dinner week
end will run Oct. 27 and 28.
The menu will include kielbasa, sauerkraut,
sweet sausage, pork chops, egg noodles and golumki
— a dish made with cabbage leaves, meat, mushrooms
and rice. Meals run from 8 to S13 and the
restaurant will also make its Italian menu available.
Over the course weekend, Nawracaj estimates
he makes about 50 to 75 meals. But not all those
are served in the restaurant.
"We do a big take-out business," he said. "Last
time, I got an order for 11 Polish dinners to go."
The restaurant, which has been operating since
1968, is housed in a modest-sized home. Nawracaj
lives upstairs with his wife, Elizabeth who took
over the restaurant from her parents.
Nawracaj was an accountant before putting on
the chef's hat and getting behind the oven. But it
wasn't until 15 years ago that he started making
pierogi.
"My aunts and mom always used to make pierogi,"
he said. "They were passing away and I wanted
to keep the tradition alive, so I took all the recipes
- each one had their own — and I made them."
He started selling the pierogi frozen in the
restaurant's catering business and little-by-little,
word spread that Scarpellino's was the place to go
for the potato treat.
Today, Scarpellino's has a pierogi menu with more
than a dozen different types of the dish. There's the
traditional potato and potato and cheese pierogi.
"I make those 98 percent of the time," he said.
"But I'm a creative cook, so I like to try things."
There's also the eggplant; the roasted red pepper
and mozzarella or the caramelized onion pierogi.
"A bunch of college kids were sitting around here
one night and they wanted a snack with red peppers
and mozzarella," Nawracaj recalled. "So I
made it. The eggplant came from a customer of
mine."
If there is a special request and some advance
notice, Nawracaj will try to accommodate even
more unique pierogi orders.
"I've made chicken parmesan," he said. "That was
a good one."
Additionally, Nawracaj will create custom meals
from customers looking to try a variety of menu
items.
"One person wanted 'one stuffed shell and one
golumki,'" he recalled, "Why not? I just have to
plate-il-up?"
Patrons come from far and wide to get their
Polish meals.
"From what I hear, (here's no place in the area
ike us," he said. "We have people coming from
Pennsylvania and Brooklyn."
One Florida resident also stops by when she's visting
family in the area.
"She brings her cooler from Florida when she
comes up for Christmas," he said. "She takes home
iO dozen,"
Nawracaj is down in the kitchen everyday. When
ie*s done making meals for patrons in the restaurant
and when he has completed filling catering
>rders, he adds to his pierogi stock.
"When there's nothing to do, roost people watch a
movie," he said. "I come down here, switch on the
IT and get to work."
He'll peel five lo 10 pounds of potatoes at a time.
With a spaghetti making machine, Nawracaj will
hin out strips of dough to the desired thickness.
Using an old coffee can covered with duct tape at
me end, Nawracaj cuts out little circles - he calls
hem his blanks — and places them in a large plasic
container.
"When I have about 10 dozen made up, I start filing
them," said Nawracaj, who will take a small
>all of the mixture and place it into the center of
he circle before folding the shell in half and pinchng
the ends closed.
"You have to make sure they're closed tight, otherwise,
when you hoi! them, they'!! open right up,"
aid Nawracaj, who freezes the pierogi once
hey've cooled down.
Scarpellino's is open for lunch 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Tuesday through Friday and for dinner 5 to 8:30
p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information,
The Chronicle
Riddick's four TDs spark Immaculata
SOMERVILLE —
Immaculata High's offensive
unit never had it so good.
All the Spartans had to do
was watch sophomore halfback
Theo Riddick cradle the
football under his arm and
then start trotting towards
Montgomery's goal line so
they could be there to congratulate
him following
another touchdown jaunt.
Of course, Riddick got some
blocking along the way, but
that's pretty much what happened
Oct. 13 as unbeaten
Immaculata coasted to a 49-7
triumph behind Riddick's
dazzling display of breakaway
running at Brooks
Field.
"He's just amazing," said
Immaculata senior guardlinebacker
Jack Rice. "He's
so quick and agile and can go
any which way on a dime. It's
just awesome blocking for a
kid like that."
"He had a great game,"
added Spartans Head Coach
Pierce Frauenheim.
The beleaguered Cougars
(1-4) are reportedly still
grasping at the 5-foot-Il, 180pound
Riddick, who merely
scored on half of his eight
carries, busting TD runs of
50, 41, 55 and 63 yards in the
opening half to help the
Spartans build a 35-0 lead by
the intermission.
With Riddick, who totaled
224 yards on the ground,
scoring almost at will and
Montgomery's oft-dangerous
aerial attack shut down by
the Immaculata defense, the
Spartans didn't need a whole
lot of offense from anyone
else to post their sixth
straight victory and move
within a step of clinching
their first Skyland
Conference-Delaware West
Division championship.
"Montgomery's record isn't
good this year but we know
it's going to be a challenge
whenever we play them,"
said Rice, who also intercepted
a pass and returned it 40
yards. "When they stopped us
right away on our first series,
it kind of got me thinking
that this wasn't going to be as
easy as a lot of people
thought. But as the game
kept going, you could see we
were going to keep moving
the ball against them."
Especially when it was in
Riddick's hands. He scored
his first TD on a 50-yarder
midway through the opening
quarter, and a few minutes
later quarterback Frank
DeNick capped a drive by
plowing in from a yard out.
Riddick really turned it
loose in the second quarter,
scoring on three long-distance
runs to virtually wrap
up the victory over a
Montgomery squad that's had
great difficulty stopping
opponents all year. The
Cougars, who lost two fumbles
and two interceptions,
had been permitting 26
points a game going into the
contest.
DeNick threw just five pass-
es, completing three for 29
yards, and speedy junior
halfback Michael Kuhn carried
six times for 33 yards,
giving an indication he can
help supplement the
already-potent 1-2 running
punch of Riddick and senior
fullback A.j. Albert.
"We have to get MichaeJ
varsity experience," said
Frauenheim, whose Spartans
took on Bridgewater-Raritan
last night. "That's the only
thing he's lacking. This game
was a good opportunity for
us to do that."
The Spartans' primary concern
was the Cougars' passing
game. But that quickly
developed into a non-factor
as the Immaculata defensive
front line was able to put
plenty of pressure on quarterback
Kevin Watson, who
in turn had little time to find
open receivers as the
Spartan secondary applied
some tight coverage.
Watson completed just 11
of 35 attempts for 137 yards,
with Rice and safety Michael
Sena picking off passes. Also
in the secondary were
Riddick, Rich Dupras, Brad
McAdam, Kuhn and Chris
Leo.
"Our pass defense did a
great job right from the
start, causing several
turnovers," said Frauenheim.
"That was the key. We didn't
really do anything different
on defense. We just talked
about the challenge and outbacks
and linebackers rose
to the occasion and we had a
pretty good rush on their
quarterback at all times. So
it was complete pass
defense."
Kuhn scored from the 3-
yard line in the third stanza
and sophomore reserve quarterback
Adam Burke connected
with junior tight end
Jim Fisher for a 49-yard TD
pass later in I lie quarter.
