Several fieldtrips left early on Tuesday morning, while some participants chose to take in the culture and history of Bonn. Although Bonn has a long history, the architecture is very modern, and the downtown area with its walking streets is mesh of steel and glass with a few highlights of early German culture standing. This participant chose to remain in Bonn and partake in one of the local Brauhaus for lunch: beer, with German sausage and sauerkraut was the theme of the day. Yumm. The Wednesday of the Congress was the Rhine Cruise and Congress dinner. Most participants boarded one of the scenic ferries for a three hour ride up and down the Rhine River. Dinner conversation was pleasant, but the real party started near the end of the cruise when many of the Congress partiers descended upon the bar on the boat’s upper deck. The heartiest of partiers were ushered off the boat in the late evening hours, only to find nearby pubs for continued revelry. The Congress ended with the closing ceremonies, and the pronouncement that the next joint Congress would take place in Tokyo, Japan in the year 2012. In all, the Congress was huge, very successful, and as mentioned it was difficult to decide exactly which talks to attend. There were always at least two sessions at one time of interest to most. The Congress organizers, Thomas Litt (IPC) and Hans Kerp (IOPC) are to be commended for their hard work in organizing such a large conference with the huge number of participants (far above their initial expectations). Still, everything ran smoothly and the University facilities and meeting rooms provided comfortable surroundings, although several talks seemed washed out and faint in the rooms which could not be blacked out completely. All palynologists and paleobotanists look forward to the next joint Congress in Tokyo which should be most entertaining, both scientifically and culturally. Thomas D. Recently he has been an active participant (both online and at the writing workshop in July) in the Earth Science Literacy Initiative. continued from page 9 dust jacket, and the only item left to decide is the final figure for the SEPM red-book cover. We will hopefully have that decision made by the time this article appears in press, and all that will be left is the review of pageproofs. The task of compiling, reviewing and editing the 21 manuscripts has been both scientifically rewarding, and mildly frustrating. It’s a task that I would not wish on my worst enemy, but extremely vital to further the micropaleontological and general geosciences. I suspect that our task was made more difficult with the authors coming from all corners of the globe, industry and academia, and all of us pressed for time in completing our tasks. The final volume will be a fitting tribute to Garry Jones, to SEPM, and the general micropaleontological audience. There will be something for everyone and it will be a great introduction to the upcoming Microfossils II meeting at the University of Houston in March 2009 which I’m certain will be a great success. Even so, the more we try to extract meaning from our data, the more clear it becomes to him that the ultimate level of value creation in our science is at the microscope, where good data collection is the fundamental requirement for all other analyses and applications. While serving on the Board of NAMS for the last few years as Newsletter Editor, he had a chance to see the research of quite a few excellent students, through helping to evaluate student grant proposals. He believes there is a need for a whole new generation of well trained and enthusiastic micropaleontologists, to both create and analyze data. He hopes to communicate that need and the value of the profession, along with exciting geologic problems it addresses, through NAMS. NAMS Council Meeting continued from page 9 in 2007, and it is hoped that the Fund can also be grown through voluntary contributions. The next meeting of the NAMS Council will take place at GSA (Houston), where NAMS has will be co-sponsoring the Cushman Foundation Reception for $500. The Microfossils II Conference is in preparation, and NAMS will be running an oral/poster session at the AAPG/SEPM Convention in Denver; “Advances in Biostratigraphic and Paleoenvironmental Analyses”.
