14 Memorial to Brian Joseph O’Neill (1954-2008) NAMS lost an outstanding member on June 26th with the death of Brian O’Neill. He fought a valiant fight with Tcell lymphoma for two years before succumbing. Brian served as president of NAMS from 2002 to 2004. Brian joined Shell in 1979 in Houston as a paleontologist after graduating with an MS degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1981, he transferred to Shell Offshore Inc. to join the paleontology staff, as Shell’s offshore drilling continued to accelerate and additional staff was needed. Brian excelled in the discipline and quickly demonstrated his skills at manipulating well fossil data in continuously evolving sophisticated software applications which enhanced interpretations of correlation events and paleobathymetry. He, and several colleagues from other companies, created a very successful short course for geoscientists who wanted to learn more about the “hows and whys” of paleontology in the Gulf Coast Basin. Subsequently, Brian taught paleo short courses all over the world at Shell installations and at universities. In addition to his penchant for teaching, he was a prodigious writer of technical papers. Over the years, he produced or co-authored some 26 external papers. In addition to these, he authored or co-authored 11 internal Shell technical reports. Brian was very active in SEPM Society for Sedimentary Geology. He held many positions in the Society, including serving on the SEPM Council as Councilor for Paleontology and two terms on the K-12 Earth Science Committee. While serving on this committee, he authored four publications. His Activities Record at SEPM headquarters shows he participated in some fourteen committees. With such an enviable record of selfless dedication to the organization, Brian was awarded Honorary Membership in the Society at the national AAPG/SEPM Convention in April this year in San Antonio. Brian also held membership in the Geological Society of America, Micropalaeontology Society, and Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research, of which he was a Fellow and a member of the Board of Directors since 2004. He was a member of the Paleontological Research Institution and the Paleontological Society. Brian was on the board of Micropaleo Press. He was also a member of the Gulf Coast Section of SEPM and served as vice-president in 1987-1988. I could go on, but I believe I have given you a just sampling of Brian’s dedication to his chosen profession. He was also an active member and participated in many volunteer activities of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. NAMS NEWS Fall 2008 MEMORIALS Although Brian never held an office in his local geological society, he was a most-valued contributor to the New Orleans Geological Society’s School Outreach Committee. He liked nothing better than being surrounded by brighteyed youngsters as he explained the differences in his beloved dinosaurs, as he was quite an authority on these creatures. In recognition of his outstanding achievements in Shell over the past 29 years, and in recognition of his outside professional activities, Shell International Exploration and Production had recently promoted Brian to Global Biostratigraphy Lead. Whether it was paleontology, music, opera, opinions about fine wines, Brian was an exceptionally gifted individual in these areas and others, too. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that he was a pillar of strength and service to Holy Name of Mary, his parish church on Algiers Point.
