Strong Is Not Enough<br />

<strong>pewag</strong> shows resolute action for a secure, prosperous future<br />

Spectacular, action-packed and exciting. This is how <strong>pewag</strong>, the manufacturer of premium<br />

chains, presented itself to the public on December 12, 2012 at the Styrian <strong>Press</strong> Club.<br />

The teaser, produced specifically for this occasion, as well as the mysterious Agent<br />

„Mr. Chain“, played by the young actor Michael Kuglitsch, both piqued the audience‘s<br />

curiosity with the unusual and novel production. With the presentation of the new claim<br />

„Strong Is Not Enough“, the Austrian company with a long tradition not only put on a<br />

splendid show – they also made a clear statement as to the company‘s future direction.<br />

Strategic realignment @ <strong>pewag</strong> 2013<br />

The company showed their innovative economical and ecological awareness based on the<br />

guiding principles of the <strong>pewag</strong> <strong>group</strong> – responsibility, quality, technology and customer<br />

service. „Because it is no longer adequate today to simply produce the strongest chains in the<br />

world, we have to widen our perspective and look to the future,“ clarified Ägyd Pengg, CEO<br />

of <strong>pewag</strong>. The success of a company is closely linked to the principles of sustainability in the<br />

environment and in society. Just as <strong>pewag</strong> has been ensuring its leading position through<br />

tradition, we would now like to shape the future with coming generations. The premium chain<br />

manufacturer published its first environmental report in 2008, and since then has been able to<br />

perform optimizations in this area. At the production facility in Brückl, Carinthia (in Austria) 12%<br />

of the facility‘s power requirement is generated by its own power stations, while at the facility in<br />

Kapfenberg, Styria, they have even managed to double the power output in comparison to last<br />

year. Sporting activities for employees are increasingly being promoted to an equal extent, both<br />

to communicate the joy of exercise as well as to improve physical fitness. Key topics for next<br />

year are new product packaging, which is made of fully recyclable and responsibly produced<br />

materials, as well as a focus on environmental and social goals within the company.<br />

Competition – Mission: Sustainability<br />

The immediate environment plays an important role in the company‘s process of strategic realignment<br />

towards sustainability. In particular, objective opinions, new points of view and access to the<br />

latest scientific discoveries are able to make significant contributions to this effect. Hence, <strong>pewag</strong><br />

is turning to local students and will be announcing a competition with the Joanneum University<br />

of Applied Sciences in January 2013, with the goal of getting students to participate actively in<br />

scientific research for sustainability in the chain industry, as well as providing new approaches and<br />

ideas that will be implemented. On the one hand, young students will get the chance to proactively<br />

take part in the shaping of internal processes, while on the other, they will get the opportunity<br />

to work constructively and closely in an economic context. More details will be available on<br />

will be accepted until the end of February 2013.The most exciting ideas and creative solutions<br />

will then be chosen and together with the Joanneum University of Applied Sciences, individually<br />

developed through cooperation, either in the form of a bachelor or master thesis, or in the form of<br />

an internship.<br />

Characterized by its long and successful history, <strong>pewag</strong>‘s development has been enormous over<br />

the centuries – from one single branch, it has grown to become an international <strong>group</strong>.<br />

Up till now, we have upheld our claim as the producers of the strongest chains in the world, but<br />

in future, we want to be known for more than „just“ producing the strongest chains.<br />

For us, „doing more“ means that we as a company want to expand, and become more versatile<br />

and diverse in a number of ways!<br />

Let us begin with the topic of responsibility: In this day and age, the topic of „sustainability“ is<br />

everywhere to be seen. We at <strong>pewag</strong> published our first environmental report in 2008.<br />

Naturally, our facilities are certified according to ISO standards. In addition to regular audits, our<br />

own initiatives for energy-saving and emission-reducing measures and the increase in employee<br />

satisfaction are extremely important.<br />

Brückl:<br />

• shut down oil heating completely – switched completely to district heating<br />

• in Brückl, 12% of the power requirement is generated in their own power plant<br />

Kapfenberg:<br />

• doubled performance of their own power plant, decommissioned Hebomat, thermographic<br />

analysis of building, pipes, sanitary facilities, ovens/vats and seals in order to lower heat loss<br />

Company:<br />

• e.g. introduction of company suggestion system and Code of Conduct (CoC)<br />

• established shortest possible distances (employees, store, logistics)<br />

• company promotes sports activities<br />

Our resolutions for 2013:<br />

• in addition to economic goals, we also have binding ecological and social goals<br />

• initiation of fully recyclable and ecological packaging, social models and employee models<br />

In addition to strength and responsibility, quality is a key element of <strong>pewag</strong>‘s basic principles:<br />

The <strong>pewag</strong> brand stands for first-class high-quality products and innovation, and is without doubt<br />

a premium brand that customers can rely on 100%. Furthermore, we are extremely dynamic:<br />

When market requirements or environments change, we are able to adapt our strategies or our<br />

organization such that we are able to fulfill our customer requirements perfectly – thanks to the<br />

different brands in the <strong>pewag</strong> <strong>group</strong>.<br />

Quality in customer relations plays a vital role for us. Hence, we want to grow in the future as<br />

well, in order to be even closer to the customer in future – at the same time, however, we identify<br />

strongly with the Styrian region and Austria, which form the heart of our organization, which has<br />

been the case for centuries now!<br />

Additionally, we decided a few weeks ago to build a new production facility in the USA. Our new<br />

facility will benefit enormously from our internal know-how in the area of process and materials<br />

development. As a leader in technology, <strong>pewag</strong> is constantly working on the development of<br />

manufacturing processes. Together with our cooperation partners, we are not only able to continually<br />

improve the performance of our current products, but also develop new innovations, some<br />

of which are unique worldwide.<br />

We ensure our leading position through tradition. The history of the <strong>pewag</strong> <strong>group</strong> goes back to<br />

the 15th century. Over 200 years ago, we founded our Graz branch, and exactly 100 years ago,<br />

we made the first snow chains in the world here in Graz. With this continuity, we were able to gain<br />

an enormous amount of experience over the past few years (centuries) and it is exactly these<br />

experiences that strengthen us for the future.<br />

We continuously strive to keep the influence<br />

of our business on the environment as low as<br />

possible. Our production and warehousing is<br />

organized so that all legal requirements on environmental<br />

protection are fulfilled. Furthermore,<br />

we consider ecological aspects for our product<br />

development, processes and distribution channels and include<br />

these in our business planning.<br />

Consequently, we are permanently striving for a continuous improvement<br />

and development of our established products to reach higher<br />

load capacities and safety for our customers with lighter weights<br />

and longer life spans.<br />

Wherever we cannot avoid an environmental impact, we strive to<br />

reduce the use of energy, environmentally harmful emissions and<br />

keep the production of waste to a minimum. When investing in new<br />

machines, we consider the technically most adequate and economically<br />

feasible state-of-the-art designs for their designated area of<br />

use.<br />

Our environmental management is certified according to ISO<br />

14001:2004. Regular internal audits assist to supervise compliance,<br />

test the effectiveness of our set standards and serve as a basis to<br />

determine improvement potentials.<br />

Out of this long-lasting tradition, we take responsibility for our products,<br />

employees, our sites and the environment very seriously.<br />
