Integration of molecular assays on micro- and nanofluidic devices that expand the ultimate understanding of biological
and physicochemical events. Extremely compelling to me are projects which combine microfabrication with biomedical
research towards point-of-care diagnostics. Academic development and possibilities for teaching and supervising
students are substantial.
EDUCATION
2008–2012 PhD from the University of Twente, The Netherlands.
Doctorate in microfluidics and microfabrication. Title of the PhD dissertation: Biomicrofluidic
chemoemitter systems: towards pheromone communication.
2005–2007 MSc in the Technical University of Dresden, Germany.
Graduate from the International Master Course of Molecular Bioengineering. Master Thesis:
Biomimetic generation of antifreezing coatings on metallic surfaces. During the course
I was granted with Go West-Scholarship by Haniel Stiftung.
1998–2002 BSc from the State Technological Institute of Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Graduated the faculty of Biotechnolgy with a degree in Biotechnology and Chemical Technology.
Bachelor Thesis: Isolation, purification and characterization of Invertase from Saccharomyces.
Defended with excellent. Study funded by the Bulgarian State, honour of
receiving a scholarship.
1994–1998 High School of Maths Kazanlak, Bulgaria.
Bulgarian High School Diploma.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Current Post Doctoral fellowship in the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute at DCU, Ireland.
2012 Leading the microfluidic research on integration project for miRNA extraction using whole
blood samples; targeting on-disc diagnostics of cancer in the early stage of the disease
development. For the prove of principle miR-16 and miR-195 are detected on a microfluidic
disc platform, however, the platform is generic and the target probe can be easily altered.
2008–2012 PhD researcher in the University of Twente, The Netherlands.
The aim of the project was to establish infochemical communication between microfluidic
devices, e.g. a chemoemitter and a chemoreceiver, based on a concept of using volatiles for
ratio metric coding. I was responsible for the design, development and characterization of
the chemoemitter; that included conducting research on the microreactor surface functionalization
with anti-adsorption layers for enzyme immobilization and characterization.
2002–2005 Chemist-technologist in Arsenal-AD, Bulgaria.
Engineer chemical processes, implement them in new production lines and supervise already
existing technological processes.
SKILLS
PRACTICAL Microfabrication and clean room experience.
