CITY GUIDE
SULTANAHMET
In any exploration of Istanbul one must start with
atmospheric Sultanahmet, the genesis of the old
city, truffled with the ancient monuments for which
the city is famous. It is where you will complete
your tourist travails, but probably not the best place
for drinking and eating, unless you want to commune
with the backpackers and not the Istanbulites.
STAY
NISANTASI
& MAÇKA
Nisantasi, the well-heeled stomping ground of the
Istanbul wealthy, is home to the Turkish literary
treasure Orhan Pamuk, who famously immortalised
its streets (and the excesses of its elites) in his many
Istanbul-set novels. Home to glitzy malls and slick
restaurants, neighbouring Maçka is the business
district, and brimful of good hotels.
The splendour of the Palazzo Donizetti
BEYOGLU
This 19th-century European area, separated from the
Old City by the Golden Horn, includes micro areas
like Cihangir, Galata, and Karaköy and features
the faded grandeur of historic buildings, as well as a
mixture of the newly revamped and the romantically
crumbling. It constitutes the beating heart of cultural,
artistic and modern Istanbul. There is a fantastic
renaissance going on, from the architectural to
the social, and it’s an exciting place to be, with hot
bars and restaurants sprouting on every street corner,
and hordes of Turkish youth on the prowl.
