EARN Program Connects Alumni
with Students and Other Alumni
The newly established Experienced
Alumni Resource Network (EARN) helps
UW-Parkside students and recent graduates
connect with alumni to gain career
insight and explore job opportunities.
And, because of their professional
experience, many alumni are in a unique
position to assist others with academic
choices at UW-Parkside.
One of the best ways for students and
recent graduates to learn about careers is
by networking with professionals in their
intended field.
Through the EARN program, contact is
established via telephone, e-mail or
personal visits. The way alumni choose to
participate and the amount of time they
commit to the program is entirely up to
them. It may be a company tour, a lunch
meeting, or a group-style career
presentation.
To learn more about the EARN program,
PHONATHON 2002
The time is coming….Please take our call
During the month of October, you will receive a very
important call from UW-Parkside, asking for your gift to the
annual fund. Your support is vital to maintaining the tradition
of excellence that you experienced at UW-Parkside. Please take
our call!
Alumni support is critical in these times. State funding has
decreased, while costs have steadily risen. Tuition alone
cannot cover the difference. To maintain our standards of
excellence, private funding, through gifts like yours, is
essential.
Our callers look forward to talking to you. Share your
UW-Parkside experience with them. Consider making a gift to
the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. You can
make a difference!
Distinguished Service Award
recipient:
Mr. Lee Kammerer ‘86
As a cartographer in Racine, Lee
Kammerer knows that an exact map
makes it easier for people to get from one
place to another. He also knows that the
many benefits he received as a young boy
in scouting helped him become the person
he is today. And that’s exactly why he
has dedicated so much of his life to helping
youth in southeastern Wisconsin.
"I want to give back," Kammerer said.
Giving back has meant active volunteer
work for more than 20 years.
Kammerer’s efforts are recognized and
respected by his peers. As one colleague
says: "Lee is an outstanding example of
service above self."
Another colleague points to Kammerer’s
focus: "Lee takes a very active role in
whatever the task is. He has helped so
many young men become leaders."
For his 23 years of outstanding service
dedicated to helping the youth of our
communities, the University of
Wisconsin-Parkside Alumni Association
is proud to name Lee Kammerer a 2002
Distinguished Service Award recipient.
Distinguished Service Award
recipient:
Mr. John Miskulin ‘85
When John Miskulin woke up in his New
Jersey home on Sept. 11, 2001, he had no
idea that before the day was over, he
would be doing something heroic.
It started with a telephone call from his
wife, Colleen. She was with the couple’s
son, Alec, at the Battery Park Day Care
Center just blocks from the World Trade
Center. The towers had been attacked.
John fought through the chaos of Lower
Manhattan. When he arrived at the day
care center he discovered a frightened
group of students and teachers in need of
a plan. With the help of a city bus and a
tugboat, John led 55 persons to safety on
the New Jersey shore.
John’s mother, Magdeline – a 1984 UW-
Parkside graduate, was not surprised by
her son’s actions. "I’m very proud of what
he did, but John has always been a takecharge
person," she said.
The American Red Cross honored John as
one of 10 Courageous Americans. The
University of Wisconsin-Parkside Alumni
Association is proud to name John
Miskulin a 2002 Distinguished Service
Award recipient.
Distinguished Achievement Award
recipient:
Dr. Gregory P. Graziano ‘79
Dr. Gregory P. Graziano continues to
advance the field of spinal surgery by
developing, improving and evaluating
surgical procedures.
Dr. Graziano joined the faculty at the
University of Michigan in 1989. Dr.
Robert Hensinger, chairman of the department
of orthopaedic surgery, describes Dr.
Graziano as an outstanding teacher.
"Greg’s particular interest is in spinal
deformities, and he has gained a regional
and national reputation for his work in
this very difficult area," Hensinger said.
Dr. Graziano’s many accomplishments
include reviewer for three leading
orthopaedic journals; published 32 times
in peer-reviewed journals; and a member
of leading organizations in the field of
orthopaedic surgery.
"Greg is a busy, talented surgeon who
brings a better life to many patients," said
Anna Maria Williams, emeritus professor
of biological sciences at UW-Parkside.
For his years of outstanding achievement
in the field of orthopaedic surgery, the
University of Wisconsin-Parkside Alumni
