Dorothy and Ross Iverson have raised their children and grandchildren to follow in their footsteps as 

farmers, raising more than 50 crops on the family farm east of Woodburn.

Tulip Festival is a family affair, spanning three generations 

If it’s a sunny weekend in 

April you can bet hundreds of 

cars will be rolling into Wooden 

Shoe Tulip Farm for the 28th annual 

Tulip Fest. 

Thousands of tourists from 

around the globe visit Tulip Fest, 

the brainchild of Barb Iverson 

and several of her sisters-in-law. 

Iverson has taken the passion 

and fondness for the place she 

was raised and transformed it 

into a destination spot for more 

than 100,000 people who come 

seeking the vibrant color of the 

tulip fields. 

The planning and running of 

this major festival is not a solo 

endeavor by Iverson, but a group 

effort between many of the Iverson 

clan. 

Iverson, along with her siblings 

Ken and Nels, and Ken’s 

son Jon, run both Iverson Family 

Farms and the Tulip Fest. 

When asked about her favorite

part of the Tulip Fest, Barb Iverson 

jokes “it’s the last day.” But 

after spending years expanding 

and diversifying the festival, it is 

truly a passion for both her and 

her brothers. 

The original family farm sits 

across the street from the festival 

site. Iverson’s parents, Ross and 

Dorothy, purchased the land in 

the 1950s and raised six children 

on the farm.

Barb Iverson said her father, 

now in his late 80’s, is a consummate 

farmer who will probably 

never retire. His hobby is 

farming, she said with a smile. 

He still enjoys running errands 

to pick up needed equipment 

parts or short stints driving tractor. 

Barb, who supplies the photos 

for the farm website and social 

media, said one of her favorite 

parts of the Tulip Fest is getting 

up early, before the crowds arrive, 

and photographing the 

fields in full bloom. 

She said the fields are just 

gorgeous with Mount Hood 

framing the eastern horizon. She 

especially enjoys mornings 

when hot air balloons launch 

and she can capture picturesque 

photos of the balloons hovering 

over the colorful fields. 

The Tulip Fest is truly a family 

affair for the Iversons. Barb 

Iverson said even her siblings 

who are not involved in the dayto-day 

operation of the farm help 

out during the festival. 

Iverson’s sister, Karen, helps 

with the logistics of moving up 

to 150,000 visitors in and out of

steam tractor for visitors. Iverson’s 

three children, along with 

many of her nieces and 

nephews, work on the farm during 

the festival. 

What started as a part-time 

operation by her and her sistersin-law 

has become a major 

tourist destination in Oregon.

nancial end of the business, 

came to the farm after many 

years of working for her uncle 

growing rhododendrons. Although 

she had hopes of eventually 

making the rhododendron 

nursery her own, the plant market 

was just not strong enough, 

she said. She decided to join her 

brothers on the family farm. 

Her brother Ken’s primary responsibilities 

on the farm include 

pest and disease management 

of the crops, which along 

with the flowers includes grass 

seed, wheat and a variety of vegetables. 

Nels Iverson’s duties include 

maintenance and repairs 

for all the farm equipment and 

buildings. 

One of the biggest challenges 

for the Iversons is the festival’s 

dependence on fair weather. 

When it’s wet and cold, very 

few people venture out to see the 

flowers, Iverson explained. 

But sunny spring days bring 

thousands of visitors and she 

takes pride knowing they are 

helping to create many lasting 

memories for the tourists roaming 

their farm and its acres of 

dazzling color.

This year’s Tulip Festival will include many 

things to keep the kids busy while parents are 

shopping and enjoying the beauty of the tulips.

■ Duckie races: This is a setup of two water 

tanks, gutters, old-fashioned water pumps and 

rubber duckies. 

■ Cow train: Barrels painted like cows and 

pulled through the fields by a John Deere Gator.

Wine Down 

Pair local wines with 

award-winning chicken barbecue 

The Tulip Fest winds down with the Wine 

Down, a two-day event that features locally-crafted 

wine and brew with award-winning barbecued 

chicken grilled by local firemen. 

Things heat up April 27 and 28, with festivities 

from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days in the Wooden 

Shoe Events Garden. 

You’ll find the experts from the Woodburn 

Firehouse Cookoff barbecue competition behind 

the grill. 

The Firehouse Cookoff is a popular summer 

event that pits grilling teams from around the valley 

in a competition to see who can barbecue the 

best chicken, pork and beef. 

Look for Woodburn Fire Chief Paul Iverson 

(whose family owns the tulip farm), a grilling 

fanatic with six years of cook-off competition 

under his belt. 

He’ll be joined by Ed Everts, an eight-year competition 

veteran, and Dale Nelson and Keith Relf, 

both with five years of cookoff experience. 

The Firehouse Cookoff team will be grilling up 

a barbecued chicken dinner with all of the fixins, 

using some of the award-winning recipes from past 

cookoff events. 

Check out their Traeger grill and get grilling tips 

from the experts. 

It’s a family-friendly event in an intimate setting 

where you can experience locally-crafted wine and 

beer. 

Featured vineyards include St. Joseph Winery, 

King’s Raven Winery and Hauer of the Dauen 

Winery. Look for craft brews from Gilgamesh 

Brewing. 

Funds raised at the chicken dinner will go to 

support this year’s Firehouse Cookoff, which will 

be Aug. 10 at the Wooden Shoe Events Garden.

House Gallery presents “Totally 

Tulips and Beautiful Bulbs,” a 

mixed media art show celebrating 

the tulip, April 6 through 20. 

The annual show 

features work by 

local artists in a variety 

of mediums, 

from oils to fabric 

art. An artists’ reception 

will be Saturday, 

April 13 from noon 

to 3 p.m. Meet the 

artists and learn about their artwork. 

Refreshments will be served. 

Selected artwork will also be available 

for purchase. 

The juried show features cash 

prizes for winners in the following 

categories: oil; acrylic; watercolor; 

mixed media, including colored 

pencil art, fabric art, wood and

Outdoor Photography: Improve your outdoor photography skills in this class taught by the experts 

from The Shutterbug. This class will focus on landscapes, macro and composition, and begins with a 30 

minute presentation, followed by a hands-on lesson in the tulip field. 

All skill levels are welcome, and loaner lenses will be available for 

students to try out some of the techniques taught in class. Bring a tripod 

for best results. Two sessions will focus on using Canon EOS 

gear, to be held on April 19 and 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Class size 

is limited to 30 students. A general class for users of any brand digital 

SLR camera will be April 13 from 9 a.m. to noon, with a limit of 60

DETAILS AND MACRO. 

Getting in close is the trick for 

this category. “We welcome pictures 

of small details that tell a 

larger story,” Carruthers said. 

“Don’t limit yourself to just 

flower shots. Think abstract: a 

water drop, insects, leaves, ice 

crystals … anything goes as long 

as it is a tight composition.” She 

reminds that some macro images 

of a flower might also go into the 

“flowers” category. 

LANDSCAPE AND FIELD. 

These pictures include landscapes, 

sunsets, field shots of the 

tulips and may also include hot 

air balloons or other major landmarks 

in the fields. 

CATCH ALL. This category is 

for the pictures that may not fit 

into the other three categories. 

But remember it must be taken 

at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm 

and may include landmarks such 

as the tractors, windmills, wooden 

shoes or pictures with people

Firemen’s annual pancake feed 

brings this rural community together 

Houses aren't the only thing the Monitor Rural 

Fire District keeps from burning - there are the 

eggs, ham and pancakes, too. 

The annual Pancake Breakfast at the volunteer 

firehouse, 15240 Woodburn-Monitor 

Road N.E., will be Sunday, April 28 from 

7 a.m. to noon. With a menu of pancake, 

hash browns, ham, scrambled eggs, milk, 

juice and coffee, a family of six can eat for 

$16. Adults are $8, children 8 and under are 

$2 and seniors are $3. 

Proceeds from the breakfast will be used to buy 

new safety equipment. Tax-deductible donations to 

the Monitor Rural Fire District are also welcome. 

Last year’s proceeds were used to buy a new sign 

that was just put up outside the fire station. 

The annual breakfast is an opportunity for the 

entire community to get together, meet their volunteer 

fire department and see where their tax dollars 

are being spent, according to Marty Hardin, an 

engineer at Xerox by day who serves as a volunteer 

fireman.

Hardin is usually behind the grill flipping 

pancakes, scrambling eggs and 

grilling hash browns. This year, he’s looking 

forward to greeting families at the door 

thanks to his recent promotion to the position of 

battalion chief. 

“It’s more than just a breakfast,” he said. “It 

brings the community together, and it is also our 

way of showing our appreciation for the support 

that they have for us.” 

It’s also an opportunity for the rural fire district 

to recruit more volunteers. Currently, Monitor 

relies on 28 volunteers – all of them with day jobs 

– to respond to emergencies ranging from house 

fires to traffic accidents. Every spare hand is appreciated, 

and Hardin said that folks can learn more 

about how they can help during the breakfast.
