<strong>College</strong> Terminology<br />

AA: Abbreviation for Associate of Arts degree.<br />

AAS: Abbreviation for the Associate of Applied Science degree.<br />

AAT: Abbreviation for the Associate of Arts in Teaching degree.<br />

Academic Advising: A process in which a student interacts with a <strong>Collin</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

academic advisor to make decisions, solve problems, and develop long-range plans<br />

related to the student’s academic goals.<br />

Academic Advisor: As a member of the <strong>Collin</strong> <strong>College</strong> staff, academic advisors<br />

assist students with information on various academic programs, <strong>Collin</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

procedures and services, degree requirements, and college transfer.<br />

Academic Calendar: For the purpose of disciplinary proceedings, academic calendar<br />

days are considered Monday-Friday.<br />

Academic Dismissal: When a student is readmitted after a period of suspension<br />

and does not earn a 2.0 grade point average for the current semester, they will be<br />

automatically dismissed for a period of one academic year.<br />

Academic Probation: Academic standing for students who have nine earned hours<br />

or more and who have a cumulative grade point average less than 2.0.<br />

Academic Warning: Academic standing for students who have nine earned hours or<br />

less with a cumulative grade point average less than 2.0.<br />

Add: To enroll in an additional course after original registration.<br />

Administrators: President, vice presidents, deans, directors, managers, coordinators,<br />

and persons with generic administrative titles or their designees.<br />

Advanced Placement (AP): A student may earn college credit by enrolling in certain<br />

advanced high school courses and obtaining a specific score on standardized tests.<br />

Allen Site: The <strong>Collin</strong> <strong>College</strong> campus located within Allen High School.<br />

Articulation: Transferring credit for courses and/or programs from one institution<br />

of higher education to another without misinterpretation.<br />

AS: Abbreviation for the Associate of Science degree.<br />

Assessment: A method to determine preparation for college-level course work.<br />

Attempted Hours: The total number of credit hours attempted includes all<br />

developmental education and/or college-level courses a student enrolls in during a<br />

given semester.<br />

Audit: To take a credit course without receiving a grade or credit; an audit fee is<br />

assessed at the time of enrollment.<br />

Authorized <strong>Collin</strong> <strong>College</strong> Official: A person employed by <strong>Collin</strong> <strong>College</strong> in an<br />

administrative, supervisory, academic, support staff, or research position; a person<br />

serving on a <strong>Collin</strong> <strong>College</strong> governing body; or a person employed by or under<br />

contract to <strong>Collin</strong> <strong>College</strong> to perform a special task, such as an attorney or an<br />

auditor.<br />
