Positively Living:
Hilda Does Her “Own Thing”
Westminster Place Resident Hilda Stolp and Recreation Supervisor Lori Mittereder talk about
new Wii games that arrived on campus.
Earlier this year, the film The Artist swept the Academy Awards winning
five Oscars, including Best Picture. Eighty-three years have passed since
silent film’s heyday, but for Westminster Place resident Hilda Stolp, the movie
quickly melted away the decades.
“Seeing The Artist brought back so many memories,” Hilda remarks. “When
we watched silent movies when I was young, a piano player would be at the
bottom of the stage and would play music to let us know of emotion. I missed
the piano player…but I still enjoyed the movie.”
The sprightly 96-year-old often is very busy on Presbyterian SeniorCare’s
Hulton Road campus and in nearby Oakmont. Hilda and other Westminster
Place residents saw The Artist at the Oaks Theater, for example; numerous
other outings include shopping and visiting local restaurants and regional
cultural attractions.

KDKA-TV’s Jennifer Antkowiak.
Jennifer’s also an author and
advocate for “Take Care Tips”
for caregivers and she presented
those tips and her personal
journey of caring for her loved
ones during a May luncheon at
the StoneRidge dining room.

Hilda Does Her “Own Thing”
When asked about her active lifestyle, Hilda pulls out her recreation
schedule, gives it a quick glance and states, “I do everything — I like doing
my own thing.” Sharing that worship services and Bible study are big
priorities, she proudly adds, “I never miss exercise group.” Known as a
“wicked” card player, Hilda is a regular at games with her group of friends.
In her scant “down time,” the former psychiatric nurse and University
of Pittsburgh instructor powers through two books a week. Totaling
800 books in her nine years at Westminster Place, Hilda keeps a running
list of titles to insure that she always reads something new.
Recreational Therapist Supervisor Lori Mittereder can’t get enough
of Hilda. “Hilda introduced me to Bananagrams…she’s always looking
for something new to do.” The Recreation Department averages nine
activities daily, ranging from exercise to arts and crafts, Wii games and
sing-alongs. Residents enjoy flexibility and choice in their daily lives and
are not restricted by a routine. So what’s Hilda’s favorite thing about all
of the activities and options?
“The best part about the activities is the people…it’s the people that
make it worthwhile. The staff does a great job of planning activities to
bring us together,” she says with a smile.

SeniorCare Network, Presbyterian

Great Day for Golf
The Presbyterian SeniorCare Foundation 17th Annual
Golf Outing on April 30th featured beautiful weather,
plenty of golfers (the event sold out!) and a wonderful
dinner — all next door at Oakmont Country Club.
To date, the annual Outings have raised more than
$1.2 million dollars for Presbyterian SeniorCare residents.

We know that the warm weather pushes away thoughts of winter and

And if you couldn’t attend 2011’s Your Holiday Home, you missed being
a part of our largest audience ever — 320 guests! — who packed the
Covenant Center at Church of the Covenant to celebrate the Simplify
Your Holidays theme, all to benefit the residents of Presbyterian
SeniorCare in Washington. Guests were entertained by certified
professional organizer and author Patty Kreamer, and tried their luck

We are proud to share that longtime Pittsburgh
broadcaster and “Friend of Presbyterian
SeniorCare” Jack Bogut has been inducted into
the Broadcasters Hall of Fame and accepted
to the National Radio Hall of Fame. “I never
intended on being rewarded for my career,”
comments the WJAS morning show host. “I just
loved what I was doing and loved even more that
I could have fun doing it.” Jack and his wife are
members of Longwood at Home and he serves
as a spokesperson and commercial “voice” for
Presbyterian SeniorCare and its affiliates. Jack
is happy to tell the “SeniorCare story” saying,
“to talk about a product successfully, you have
to love it — and I truly do.”
