Annual Report 2010

Growing From a Seed
2011 is the year that Everdale became a teenager! For 13 years we have been growing,
learning, and evolving. Because of the dedication of our supporters and the hard work
of our amazing staff, we have now become recognized leaders and innovators in
farm-based education across Canada and North America. It was a time for us to take
a moment to reflect on what we have accomplished and where we are heading. We
decided that a new mission statement would be the best way to describe the Everdale of
today. It was time to renew our vows and commitments to our community and world-atlarge.
To let them know, in a clear and strong voice, who we are.
“To be a teaching farm that provides hands-on, solution-based food
and farming education to build and engage healthy local communities”
So, what do these words mean? For us, they mean:
• We look for better ways and build on hope. That means we use the brightest lights to
lead.
• We grow the farmers of tomorrow. We give them the skills to grow food and a
sustainable livelihood.
• We are a farm that engages youth to become advocates, supporters, consumers,
and champions of local food and farming (and of course, future farmers).
• We see food and farming as a way to help build healthy minds, bodies, and
communities. Everdale has a unique and critical role to play in creating a sustainable
and thriving future for generations to come.
By focusing locally we can make changes globally. By working hard on the ground we
can provide real life examples for other communities to replicate.
Finally, our new mission statement means that your support of Everdale is an
investment in a future full of hope and promise. It means that together we will continue
planting the seeds of change and help them grow into a remarkable future.
Who says teenagers are apathetic these days? Not us.
The future of farming is DIVERSE
Learning to farm
Diversity is a word that sums up the state of the current new farmer landscape. Over
the last 13 years we have found there is no one model for new farmers. They come to
Everdale from different places, cultures, backgrounds, and for many different reasons.
Here are the quick stories of our 4 pictured interns:
AMY – is an artist with a passion for food and community. She came to Everdale to
expand her farm skills and plans on blending her two worlds in future projects.
ROB – is a career switcher. He left a job on Bay Street to follow his heart and passion.
He plans on following up his internship with our business planning course and starting
his own farm within the next two years.
COURTNEY – is a college co-op student. Currently enrolled in Sanford Fleming’s
Sustainable Farm program, she came to Everdale to get her farm skills up and running.
AABIR – is a university student completing a Master’s degree. Aabir’s interest in
ecological farming will inform his continuing work in sustainable business practices.
These four individuals form a diverse group of people that are all ready to change the
world through food and farming. Their varied skills and gifts will help transform our
communities, and create new opportunities for engagement around food, farming, and
the environment.
“Everdale has been an amazing place full of everyday ‘aha’
moments. I am so lucky to have had this experience”
- Aabir Dey
