ACETYL CHLORIDE
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET
EXCEL INDUSTRIES LIMITED
Eyes : Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Eyelids should
be held apart during the flushing. Seek medical attention immediately.
Skin : Remove contaminated clothing. Wash affected area with large amounts of water &
soap. Seek medical attention immediately. If the clothing is contaminated, it should
be laundered.
Inhalation : In case of exposure remove exposed person to fresh air. If breathing has ceased, give
artificial respiration or oxygen immediately. Seek medical attention immediately.
Ingestion : First rinse mouth. DO NOT induce vomiting. Give large amount of water to drink
only if the person is conscious. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious
person. Seek medical attention immediately.
Note to Physician : Treat symptomatically
SECTION 5 : FIREFIGHTING MEASURES
HAZCHEM code : 4WE
Hazardous combustion : Emits toxic and corrosive fumes of HCl & phosgene,
products
Carbon dioxide, Carbon monoxide
Conditions under which
flammability could occur
: Vapour may be ignited by static discharge
Extinguishing media : CO2, Dry chemical. Do not use water or foam. Reacts violently
Unsuitable fire
extinguishing media
:
with water
Water, Foam
Sensitivity to explosion : Vapour is sensitive to explosion when exposed to ignition source
Fire fighting procedure : In case of fire, toxic & irritant fumes are generated. Do not breathe fumes. Fight
fire from a safe distance and a protected location due to
potential of hazardous vapour and decomposition products. Do not enter fire
area without proper protection
Special protective
: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.
equipment for the fighters Equipment should be thoroughly decontaminated after use.
SECTION 6 : ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
ACETYL CHLORIDE
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET
EXCEL INDUSTRIES LIMITED
Personal precautions : Do not inhale. Avoid contact with material. Use respiratory & personal
protection recommended in Section 8.
Environmental
: Prevent mixing with water bodies, sewers. Inform local authorities if the
precautions
material has entered water sources.
Procedures for dealing : Keep water away from spill material. Remove all sources of ignition. Wear
with release or spill appropriate respiratory & personal protective equipment. Keep unnecessary
(Major/Minor)
and unprotected personnel from entering the area. Shut off the leak without
risk. Contain and recover the liquid if possible. Collect liquid in an
appropriate container or absorb with an inert material like vermiculite, sand,
earth etc. and place in an appropriate chemical waste container. Do not
absorb on combustible material, such as saw dust. After cleanup operation
wash the area with plenty of water. Dispose as per instructions mentioned in
Section 13.
Additional instructions : After clean up operations, decontaminate & launder all protective clothing
and equipment before storing & reusing
SECTION 7 : HANDLING AND STORAGE
HANDLING :
Safe handling practices and equipment : Good industrial practice in housekeeping and personal hygiene
should be followed. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Ensure good ventilation at workplace.
Instruction for fire & explosion protection: No smoking.
STORAGE :
Appropriate storage practices/ requirements: Store in cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from water,
moisture, heat and ignition sources. Keep containers closed. Isolate from incompatible material & conditions.
Protect against physical damage. Check regularly for leaks. Metal container should be bonded and grounded
for transfer to avoid static sparks. Use non sparking type tools and equipment, explosion proof ventilation.
Material of construction of containers: Glass, PTFE, HMHDPE
