MONDAY MORNING ROUNDUP
The Big Saguaros 13, Swindlers
11— After Dave Pincura walked and Ed Niemi singled
to open the home-half of the first inning, Jimmy Hanlin
drove them home with a clutch one-out double to give
The Big Saguaros the early 2-1 lead. Back-to-back RBIdoubles
by Mark Dunford and Scott Kolesar, and a
Stephen Mullin triple helped tally five runs over the next
three frames, good for a 7-5 lead at the end of four.
Scoring six runs in the fifth on singles by Bert Stohrer,
Rick Sedlacek, Hanlin and Kolesar, and walks to Matt
Underwood, Mike Prebish, Don Seager and Mullin, the
game looked out of reach. Right-hander Underwood
battled to hang on and earn the complete game victory,
recording his fifth strikeout on a 2-2 slider to end the
game. Hanlin led his team with three hits, as did Pincura
with three RBI. Shortstop Niemi turned in a key 6-
3 double play to save two runs in the first.
Equal to the task, righty Willie Geiser threw a
mix of pitches to go the distance for Swindlers, whose
six-run seventh inning rally fell short. Rick Arnholt,
Greg VanValkenburgh, and Mike Klayko led their team
with two hits apiece. Klayko and Tony Catanzarite each
tripled, while Nate Segall, Mitch Wile, VanValkenburgh,
and Geiser each doubled.
Killer B’s 8, Rapid CD’s 3— A seven-run
uprising in the bottom of the first, keyed by a James
Lehman clutch two-out RBI-single to center, gave Killer
B’s right-hander Randy Dorco all he would need in
cruising to a complete-game victory. Walking just two,
Dorco notched six strikeouts. Also delivering base hits
in the decisive first was Jim Lehman, Vinny Maculaitis,
John Thompson, and Mike Thompson. Second inning
back-to-back doubles by John Thompson and Dennis
Lehman accounted for the final tally. Shining on defense
was shortstop John Thompson, who charged a lazy
grounder and made a bare-hand pick up and throw to
first baseman Tom Borowy in the fourth. He also made
two over-the-head running catches and was part of a 4-6
-3 double play with Dennis Lehman and Tim Murdock.
Rapid CD’s veteran right-hander Bill Schubert regained
his control after the first in a complete game effort.
He also singled, doubled, and scored two runs.
Also stroking doubles were Kevin Karl and Mike
Civiello. Jason Greene was perfect with three singles in
as many at-bats. On defense, third baseman Chris Schubert
and first baseman Mark Shipps each chased down
runners and made great throws to record outs.
Page 3
B.A.T.S 8, Rhomburba’s 4— Knotted up
at 3-3 as they came to bat in the top of the seventh, Eric
Walsky drew a leadoff walk for B.A.T.S. Marty Cole
and Rob Brocious then singled, followed by Bill Turner
and Don Dohanyos each reaching on a free pass. Scott
Storc then delivered an RBI-single to reload the bases,
followed by an RBI-walk to Dick Molder. Matt Cole’s
sacrifice fly completed the five-run uprising to make it 8
-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Right-hander
Eric Walsky, who came on in relief in the fifth, surrendered
a run while battling his way to the victory. Cole,
the veteran southpaw, started and hurled four innings.
He recorded a power strikeout with two on to end the
first, and escaped a no-outs bases-loaded jam in the second
by striking out the side. He led B.A.T.S with three
hits, while Walsky, Brocious, Turner and Storc each had
two.
Rhomburba’s Rick Capretta allowed just three runs
over the first six innings. The righty’s big curveball and
sidearm delivery contributed to his ten-strikeout performance.
Leading their team with two hits each was-
Ross DeJohn, Ron Kleinlein, and Jeff Kleinlein, whose
double to the fence in left in the bottom of the seventh
was Rhomburba’s only extra base hit.
Azcue’s Miscues 9, Feller’s Fans 4—
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the first, leadoff hitter Tom
Adamik got things started for Azcue’s Miscues with a
single. Ken Seelie and Jim Batzel each walked to load
the bases for Dave Sigworth, who stroked a solid RBIsingle.
Ed Yuhas and Mike Traina each singled to tie
the game 3-3. Seelie, the veteran left-hander, used a
curveball-fastball mix, then tossed four scoreless innings
en route to a complete-game victory. Azcue’s Miscues
took control of the game with a two-out four-run rally in
the fifth on consecutive RBI base hits by Batzel, Yuhas,
Tim Zelenak and Traina, after a Seelie walk. They
plated two more runs in the sixth on a Batzel double to
deep left-center to drive in Adamik and Seelie, who each
singled.
Ron Budz and Cody Westmoreland stroked singles
and Archie Beaton’s RBI-double opened the game for
Feller’s Fans. Jim Casey smashed a one-out single to
drive in two runs. Right-hander Harry Oschip struck out
five in going the distance, including a three inning scoreless
stretch. Beaton had a great game at catcher, featuring
a key defensive play in the first. Also shining on
defense was Westmoreland with a big catch in center
and Casey at third, with a foul catch at the fence.

MONDAY AFTERNOON ROUNDUP
Azcue’s Miscues 6, B.A.T.S 4— With
two outs and none on in the top half of the Azcue’s Miscues
first, Jim Batzel singled and Dave Sigworth
promptly doubled him home. Ed Yuhas then singled
home Sigworth to take a quick 2-0 lead. Steve Sutker
stroked a single to lead off the third. Tom Adamik followed
with a single, then Ken Seelie ripped an RBIdouble
to the gap. Sigworth notched his second RBI
with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. With one out in the
sixth, Sigworth and Yuhas singled. Tim Zelenak doubled
to drive home Sigworth, and Mike Traina singled to
plate Yuhas to extend the lead 6-2. Making the most of
their twelve base hits, Azcue’s Miscues was paced by
Traina’s three-for-three, and Yuhas and Sutker, who had
two hits apiece.
B.A.T.S collected sixteen base hits, but managed
just single tallies in the fourth and fifth before rallying
for two runs on five base hits in the bottom of the
seventh. The tension-filled inning ended with the tying
runs on base. Greg DePace and Scott Storc led their
team with three hits apiece. Storc and Don Dohanyos
each doubled for B.A.T.S only extra-base hits.
The Big Saguaros 14, Feller’s Fans
8—The Big Saguaros came out swinging in the top of
the first and exploded for four runs. Matt Underwood
tripled home Dave Pincura and Ed Niemi, who had each
singled to start the frame. With one out, Mark Dunford
and Scott Kolesar smashed consecutive doubles. The
bats boomed again in the third on singles by Underwood,
Dunford, Kolesar, Bert Stohrer, and Stephen
Mullin, wrapped around Jimmy Hanlin’s triple, to score
three and take a 7-4 lead. After scoring two runs in the
fourth to make it 9-6, Ed Niemi’s two-run home run
highlighted the three-run sixth to break the game open at
12-8. The Big Saguaros scored their final two runs in
the seventh on consecutive singles by Don Seager,
Mullin, and Rick Sedlacek; a Pincura sacrifice fly, and
Underwood’s single that completed his perfect five-forfive
performance.
Feller’s Fans battled throughout. Harry Oschip
and Archie Beaton each were a perfect four-for-four including
a double apiece, which was the team’s only extra-base
hits. Bill Fleig had three singles, while Michael
Piaser and Nate Fogt each had two. The game was close
until the sixth. Down by three runs, Feller’s Fans tied
the game in the second on consecutive singles by Piaser
and Fogt, a big one-out Oschip double, and a clutch twoout
single by Beaton that tied the game 4-4.
Swindlers 13, Killer B’s 6— Trailing 5
-0, Bob Slemmons lead off the Swindlers’ third with a
single. Tony Catanzarite then smashed a triple to drive
him home and get Swindlers on the board. With one
out, Rick Arnholt, Nate Segall, and Mitch Wile each
singled to close it to 5-3 at the end of three. Mike Catanzarite
doubled to lead off the fifth and rode home on
Tom Helwick’s RBI-single to trail by one run, 5-4.
Swindlers took a 7-6 lead in the fifth on doubles by
Mike Klayko and Arnholt, singles by Segall, Geiser, and
Mike Catanzarite, and a Wile sacrifice fly. They blew
the game open in the bottom of the sixth by opening
with seven consecutive hits, including Arnolt’s second
double that made him a perfect four-for-four on the
game. In gaining the come-from-behind victory, every
Swindlers batter had at least one base hit.
Vinny Maculaitis and John Thompson had two
doubles each and Vic Murdock tripled to pace Killer
B’s. Murdock’s blast knocked in two runs as part of his
three-for-three afternoon. Also perfect was Tom
Borowy with three singles. Jim Lehman had two hits,
while Dennis Lehman and Tim Murdock each had one.
Rhomburba’s 10, Rapid CD’s 8—
Trailing 6-3 at the end of two, Rhomburba’s erupted for
seven runs in the top of the third with the big blast coming
off the bat of Rick Capretta, who belted a triple to
the right field fence that scored Gary Adkins, who led
off the inning with a single, and Ross DeJohn who followed
Adkins with a double. Jeff Kleinlein then singled
home Capretta. Ron Kleinlein and Tim Meade each singled,
then came around to score on Brett Wilhelm’s double
and Ed Cosentino’s single. Gus Giviskos drove in
the final run of the inning on a fielder’s choice to give
Rhomburba’s a 10-6 lead. Capretta was also a standout
at shortstop. In the bottom of the fifth and the score 10-
8 with the tying runs on base, Capretta went deep in the
hole at short and then fired to first to end the inning. In
the bottom of the sixth, Capretta made a barehand catch
at second to force the runner.
In the home half of the first Rapid CD’s opened
with consecutive singles by Tom Dolan, Bill Schubert,
Jason Greene, and Kevin Karl. With one out, Bob Dolan,
Mark Shipps, Mike Civiello, and Jimmy Barensfeld
each singled. Pete Cibulskas had an RBI fielder’s
choice that plated the sixth run. Tom Dolan singled with
two outs in the fourth and rode home on Schubert’s triple,
which was the team’s only extra-base hit. Greene
then singled him home to complete the scoring.
