MARCO BATTI is a member of UNESCO’S International Dance Council, a former dancer for the
company “Motus” and the New York company “Eglevsky Ballet,” and has become well known as an im-
portant Ballet and Comtemporary dance teacher. He started his career at a young age, leading him, in
2006, to found the Professional Training Center “Ateneo della Danza,” one of the most highly recognized
training centers for choreutic arts in Italy and Europe, of which he is now artistic director.
Batti has studied at the most prestigious institutions including the Vaganova Academy in St. Peters-
burg and the American Ballet Theatre in New York from which he graduated as a teacher for the ABT
National Training Curriculum®. Having explored these teaching methods, he now offers his students a
thorough education both in Ballet and Contemporary dance. He has also developed the most up-to-date
teaching method CJMB (Contemporary Jazz Marco Batti). Moreover, his attention to anatomical and
postural concerns led to the development of Biomechanics of Dance in Water® technique, a discipline
that combines dance with nature by limiting the effect of gravity on the dancer’s body and increasing the
resistance on the muscles.
His versatility and preparation as an all-round teacher and choreographer makes Marco Batti one of
the most coveted and sought-after guest teachers on the international level.

CLASSICAL BALLet teACher
After years of professional experience in
dance companies and his participation in
numerous productions at major theaters in
Europe and the United States, Marco Batti is
dedicated to teaching ballet and contemporary
dance. After graduating from the Accademia
dei Popoli del Mondo (UNESCO affiliate)
as a teacher of the Vaganova method
from Level I through V, he graduated from
the Vaganova Academy in St. Petersburg
where he studied Ballet Technique Methodology
Vaganova, Pas de deux and Character
dance.
The desire to provide his students with a
combination of rigorous preparation and
modern versatility led him to broaden his
knowledge of ballet and become certified by
the American Ballet Theatre® in New York as
a teacher of the National Training Curriculum
method (from Level 1 through 7 and
Partnering).
Italy and Europe.

the CONteMPOrArY JAZZ MArCO BAttI (CJMB) MethOD
The theory that inspired the CJMB methodology can be summed up in Marco Batti’s interpretation
of Isadora Duncan’s famous phrase, “Music generates Feeling, Feeling generates Movement.”
According to Batti, the keyword is Feeling. This he interprets as the driving force of real
movement involving both the physical and emotional. With real movement, the dancer is able
to express his or her emotions in a natural and conscious way through the language of dance,
both traditional and nontraditional.
From a stylistic point of view, the methodology of CMJB is inspired by the techniques of Graham,
Limon, Cunningham and Horton and is impregnated with jazz influences. With this
methodology, Marco Batti not only pays tribute to the sources that inspired him, but has developed
them in a strongly expressive manner. According to Batti, the Graham technique and that
of Limon were tied too closely to the techniques of their era and are therefore too restricting for
the natural expression of the movement/feelings of contemporary dancers. The CJMB methodology
has taken these techniques and made them more fluid, natural and contemporary in
expression and movement. Students of this methodology follow a syllabus that includes the
study of specific exercises divided by level and degree of difficulty, with emphasis on interpretation
and improvisation.
The main characteristic of the CJMB program is the significant effect it has on the mind as well
as the body. It goes beyond the simple execution of movement by breaking down the inhibitions
that often limit a dancer in free expression. In order to achieve this, the student’s awareness
of both the surrounding space and the perception of his or her body is dictated by the

feeling. The ultimate goal is to achieve a profound interpretation, one that is never separated
from the execution.
STRUCTURE OF CJMB PROGRAM
The methodology of CJMB is structured in five levels:
Preliminary
Elementary
Intermediate
Advanced
Professional (level for teachers)
There are practical goals to be achieved at each level. Theory is included in the higher levels.
The Preliminary level is organized in two phases, while Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced
consist of three phases.
On completing each level, the student is examined by a board of professionals and, if successful,
moves on to the next level. The student will be issued a certificate on passing the exam. The
methodology CJMB is currently in use in Professional Training Courses and is legally recognized
by the Region of Tuscany.
CJMB TEACHING CERTIFICATE
The Professional Teachers course enables the successful student to teach the CJMB method.
On passing the Professional II level, the student is awarded the title of Methodology CJMB
Teacher. The Professional course provides comprehensive training that includes, in addition to
theoretical and practical methodology, psychology and pedagogical preparation, and a practical
section on improvisation and choreography.

MArCO BAttI & “AteNeO DeLLA DANZA”
A.s.d. Ateneo della Danza, opened its doors on October 1, 2006, in the heart of the historical
center of Siena, Italy. The dance center is recognized as an Official Member of UNESCO’S International
Dance Council. It is considered to be one of the most comprehensive professional
dance training centers and the first center in Italy to include the prestigious National Training
Curriculum programs of the American Ballet Theater. Its artistic director, Marco Batti, himself
a graduate of the American Ballet Theater®, offers a training program that is divided into eight
levels, combining the high quality of artistic training along with the development and health of
the student.
The training course is open to students aged 10 to 25 who are selected through auditions. The
professional training course prepares students in ballet and contemporary dance, offering all
of the tools that will be needed in the professional dance world. The training is completed with
both an internal exam and an external exam at the prestigious Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
School (School of the American Ballet Theater).
Entry into the Professional Training Program is through audition, after passing a pre-selection
based on a photo-audition and an interview. Full acceptance into the program is finalized following
a trial period. The curriculum includes, ballet, pointes technique, boys technique, pas
de deux, repertoire, contemporary, modern, barre au sol, physiotechnique, Gyrotonic®, Gyrokinesis®,
Biomechanics of Dance in Water® as well as theoretical subjects including history of
dance, music, psychology, nutrition and anatomy.
During the course of study, the student will gradually enter the world of work by taking part in
auditions, competitions in Italy and abroad, and internships in well-known dance companies.

Ateneo della Danza has a Postural Center coordinated by a Medical Director and assisted by
a medical team consisting of a physiotherapist, a dietician and a psychologist, to ensure the
students complete development. In addition, students have access to masseurs and certified
instructors in Gyrotonic®, Gyrokinesis® and Pilates.
Ateneo della Dance also holds regular workshops with leading names in international dance.
The school has proudly organized, with great success, three International Spring Stages, a Winter
Stage and two Intensive Summer Schools in Siena, one of the most fascinating historical and
cultural centers and a World Heritage Site. These events received patronage from the City of
Siena and the International Dance Council.
Students from all over Europe have the opportunity to stay in Siena, absorbing the culture while
attending classes in ballet, modern and contemporary dance with some of the biggest names
in international dance such as Carlos Gacio (Maîre de Ballet of the Vienna Opera), Bruno
Vescovo (former principal dancer of Teatro alla Scala), Emanuele Soavi (dancer and founder
of the company Movingtheatre.de), Giulia Rossitto (Teatro alla Scala), Loreta Alexandrescu
(teacher at the Academy of Ballet
of the Teatro alla Scala) and
Mia Molinari (former dancer for
the RAI-Mediaset television networks,
now teacher and producer),
Christophe Ferrari (former
Principal Dancer of the Opera of
Vienna) and Marco Batti.
The combination of quality
dance education and culture has
also proved successful at the Intensive
Summer School, held in
the splendid setting of the Monastery
of Costafabbri for a tenday
period. Immersed in the countryside of Siena students from around the world are selected
on the basis of photographs, and have the opportunity to stay at the facilities of the Monastery
and study with the great names of Italian and international dance. Teachers who have worked
for the success of the event are: Giuseppe Carbone (former Artistic Director of major Italian
and European ballet companies), Annamaria Prina (historical director of the Academy of Ballet
of the Teatro alla Scala), Anna Maria Grossi (former Prima Ballerina of the Teatro alla Scala)
Bruno Vescovo, Francesco Ventriglia (Director of Maggio Danza), Marco Batti, Mia Molinari,
MArCO BAttI FOUNDer OF “BALLettO DI SIeNA”
Presentation
The Balletto di Siena dance company is an ambitious project founded with the goal of providing
access to the world of work to young dancers between the ages of 18 and 25. These young
people will work directly with professionals who are already established in the dance world.
The ultimate goal is to provide new talent, by means of temporary contracts, with a chance to
begin working in this nationally recognized company that is active throughout Europe.
This project was created based on the professional experience that Marco Batti has accumulated
since 2006 in the preparation and professional training of young dancers. This experience
made him aware of the gap that can exist between training and work placement. This gap can
become unbridgeable for two reasons:
1. Dance schools that term themselves ‘professional’ generally do little to ensure that their
dancers enter the real world of work, but rather tend to hold on to their most deserving
students in addition to limiting their artistic goals to the ‘end of the year’ show.
2. Established companies need to find competent and experienced dancers. Unfortunately this
means that many young dancers often find themselves having to work without pay in companies
that do not guarantee a future or artistic growth.
The Balletto di Siena is an important new addition to the national scene, offering young dancers
the opportunity to begin to work with regular contracts, and at the same time, thanks to
continuing their work with professionals, continue to develop their skills. The quality of work
and ongoing training are guaranteed by the expertise of the Artistic Direction of Marco Batti
and Mia Molinari, the artistic consultant Maestro Giuseppe Carbone and the experience of
other individuals who will be collaborating on the project. This includes Ateneo della Danza,

the official school of Balletto di Siena, where the company is resident.
The uniqueness of this new project lies in the fact that young dancers aged between 18 and 25 will
be placed in a stable company and have the opportunity to work with established professionals
and internationally renowned choreographers.
EDUCATIONAL GOALS
The objectives of the Balletto di Siena are to provide students with the opportunity to continue
to learn and improve their skills through daily classes at the professional training center, Ateneo
della Danza. The students will train with internationally renowned teachers who rotate during
the year. In addition, they will work closely with international choreographers on specific productions
which will give students the possibility of working with professionals. Furthermore,
young dancers will have the opportunity to engage with professional dancers who will work
closely with students.
ARTISTIC OBJECTIVES
The Balletto di Siena’s artistic goals range from classical to contemporary, depending on the
choices of artistic director and choreographer working with the company. The classical section
will range from repertoire to neoclassical. The contemporary section will present new choreography
productions, created and directed by choreographers working with the company.

BIOMeChANICS OF DANCe IN WAter
The Biomechanics of Dance in Water identifies
the benefits of the effect of water on
the bodies of dancers during the execution
of movements. Marco Batti has designed
exercises that when carried out in water,
limit the effect of gravity on the dancer’s
body and increases the resistance on the
muscles. These exercises are not designed
as physiotherapy nor do they have any
rehabilitation purpose. The exercises are
born from a dancer’s need to understand
and perform movements with a high level
of technical difficulty.
Nevertheless, dancers who have had injuries
have had beneficial results from this
method. Through the practice of these exercises,
the dancer has the opportunity to
work on different muscle groups. The benefits
derive from the activation of the antagonist
muscles which act in opposition
to the movement being performed, increases
the sensory-perceptual abilities of
the dancer without producing defects and
imperfections in the athletic performance.
In addition, the practice of these exercises helps to strengthen the areas not usually used during
training. When carried out in water, the absence of gravity eliminates weight that can be harmful
to the muscular-skeletal system if movements are incorrect.
The exercises developed by Marco Batti are designed to increase the concentration of the mind
over the body so that the dancer perceives the actual muscles that are being used, and therefore
the method generates greater responsiveness and reduces response time. The obvious advantages
with respect to the normal activities of a dancer are that technique is improved, injuries
reduced and body awareness increased. Enhanced balance, strength, endurance, coordination,
posture and flexibility are the benefits to dancers who have followed a program of biomechanics
of dance in water.
Marco Batti himself has experienced firsthand the benefits of biomechanics of dance in water.
He is the founder and legal owner of this method and holds regular theoretical and practical
seminars for dancers.

CAvALCArDANZANDO
Cavalcardanzando is a course that integrates introductory activities related to dancing and
horse riding by looking at them as complementary disciplines.
The activity is aimed at school-aged students, but also includes adults who wish to bring together
distinct but complementary disciplines in order to improve and increase knowledge of
the self in its psycho-physical dynamics.
This is a project aimed at implementing parallel and complementary activities that can lead
young people and adults to a better knowledge of the psycho-physical dynamics of themselves
and others. It also develops a more careful perception of space and time through vertical, horizontal
and lateral movement. Significant note can be made of the increased capacity to identify
and recognize different senses and feelings.
The idea of working in combined disciplines comes from such activities as dance therapy and
hippo therapy (therapy using horses) and applying it to non-disabled people. This activity is
linked to opportunities to develop social skills without verbal communication. Similarly in
dance, children are asked to use a physical language by using the body as a medium of expression
and a means of interacting with their peers. Getting close to horses means to acquire a
new sense of the self in terms of both space and the emotions. Dance offers the opportunity
to develop sensitivity and the ability to conduct oneself in the appropriate manner for those
encountering horses for the first time.
The two disciplines provide complementary tools to all those who approach one or the other.
There are many elements of contact between horse riding and dance:
• Development of socialization and interpersonal
relationships in relation to one’s body
and that of others. The understanding of “improvement”
is not intended as a means to be
competitive
• Perception of emotional states and a way of
living in beings different from us
• Processing and interpretation of bodily sensations
in patterns of movement in space
• Developing the capability of self-location in
space-time
• Physical activity linked to the use of different
muscles and joints designed for “actions”
• Integration of different modes of physical
posture and balance management of the body
(center of gravity to the ground and knowledge
of the horse)
