Fontainebleau
Range
The experience of climbing in Fontainebleau
is like no other, it is so rich and inspiring that
it attracts climbers from all over the globe.
Each route or problem is so distinctive and
challenging that it forces a climber to think
differently. This experience is what has
driven the development of our Fontainebleau
Range.
From crimps to slopers, each hand-carved
hold has been created to emulate the texture
and unique geology found on the boulders in
Fontainebleau. The range covers a multitude
of sizes, angles, and difficulties –providing
any imaginative route-setter the tools to
recreate the somewhat inimitable climbing
that Fontainebleau offers –giving the climber
distinct routes that will challenge and inspire
them.

FontainebleauCrimps
When you think of crimps in Fontainebleau, you might think of those glassy
rigosities that can really sting.
... Our crimps are more, whilst keeping the whole Fontainebleau experience real;
they carry those aspects that make Fontainebleau what it is without the pain.
to positive and simple to technical.
They been designed to suit all types of route or boulder problem and can be
used on all wall angles and are a great complement with any other set from the
FontainebleauPockets
The pockets found in Fontainebleau are by far the most unusual because of the unique
geology of the sandstone.
The whole texture, shape and uniqueness have been imitated to bring the experience
closer to home.
The set includes again a wide variety of shape, size, and difficulty including both positive
juggy pockets to extremely technical ones.
These unusual looking pockets will make any route or problem special and inspiring
FontainebleauEdges
An extra 5 holds have been introduced in to this set making it now a set of 10.
The texture and styles carved into them explore other features also found on the
Fontainebleau rock – aside from the famous ‘elephant skin’ associated with our
other sets. Some of the original edges have been redesigned and improved. The
Extra screw hole has been moved closer to the main bolt-hole to reduce chipping
of the hold around screw-holes. The set now includes more positive holds
allowing for a wider range of routes to be made.
imagination.
Using them as technical foot holds or intermediate holds will always add interest to any
route or problem. These screw-on holds are for wooden walls only, and are made from
our strongest material (UHS).
FontainebleauSlopers
We’ve travelled around the boulders in Fontainebleau, found the best problems with
the best slopers on and tried to recreate that feeling. From El Poussah, Isatis, to
Cortomaltèse, Bas Cuvier,
It is almost impossible to recreate a Fontainebleau sloper -you would need a hold the size
of the boulder itself to get the perfect feeling of that slap where your whole arm is needed
to just hold on!!!
Fontainebleau
Cortomaltese
Inspired by the main two holds and textures on the infamous problem at Bas Cuvier
“Corto Maltese”. This hand-carved volume really captures some of the essence of
climbing in Fontainebleau. It has excellent long-lasting texture which is kind to the
hand that climbs it. And can be used in a multitude of positions giving endless routing
possibilities. The fixation points are incorporated into the volume itself – sometimes giving
that little extra to climbers in desperate circumstances.
Gritstone
Range
To better capture the features of the GritStone
we have made this range of holds physically
bigger than the other holds in other ranges.
These are the first set of climbing holds to
contain real pebbles from the peak district, and
offer both a discrete functional and asthetic.
They have been carefully selected if the pebble
is used, it is comfortable to hold giving the
climber a real taste for the UK’s peak district.
35

GritstoneCrimps
The gritstone crimps include 20 small to medium holds.
They have been inspired by real holds that exist in the UK’s Peak District from
some of the most famous routes. The wide variety of Gritstone that appears in
the peaks has been recreated to the finest detail and incorporated into the holds
both functionally and aesthetically.
You will find that most of the holds are quite positive with a small selection being
fairly technical.
GritstonePinches
The 10 Gritstone Pinches also include Keel type holds, like those found at
Burbage, or like in Yorkshire “the keel”. The pinches found in the peaks tend to
be quite open, and rely on friction a lot - the new foam used for carving in the
gritstone range, has an excellent surface giving optimum friction. Pebbles do
feature in this set, and have been carefully selected to enhance the climbing
experience.
GritstoneJugs
With these 20 Jugs, the Gritstone style has been incorporated more aesthetically
than functionally. The most important aspect of the jug, the hold itself, has been
preserved to be extremely ergonomically comfortable when climbing.
These jugs are a great addition to the Gritstone Range and allow for easier routes
on steeper ground. On some holds, pebbles have been used as a potential
feature-foot-hold opposite to the hold itself.
that he/she has exerienced in this range. With the subtle use of pebbles both
aesthetically and functionally, when rotated, the holds can be used in an extrmely
GritstoneSpecials
The specials are a set of holds that take the most interesting aspects of a rocks features and
subtleties and use them to inspire the shapes. The idea behind these sets are to add interest
to your routes, whether the holds are used as footholds, or as tricky hand-holds. Ideal for
competitions, used on plywood macro features, either as Screw-ons or bolt-ons - these specials
incorporate both options. In this set of 10, Pebbles, Bullet wounds, Rugosities, the unusual
foot placements on Ben’s Wall (Curbar), Small uncompromising pockets found on slabby walls,
and subtle lines found on the grit have been the source of inspiration in creating the Gritstone
The 10 Gritstone slopers feature our largest slopers ever. They also include some “flatties”
new Foam used in carving this range plays the most important part in climbing this set. With
subtle features of texture, lines and pebbles these slopers really to mimic that GritStone feel - or
GritstoneXXXL
Having studied the features of gritstone very carefully for many years we have concluded that
what we needed to create were some larger feature bolt/screw-on holds for this range. And as
a starter, we looked at some of the most famous holds and problems/routes for our inspiration.
“Brad Pitt” at Stanage plantation had been on our mind for many years - An edgy hold, merged
with heel placement... This hold, and the others in the set not only offers the chance to recreate
Limestone
Range
Limestone has to offer some of the most diverse and engaging varieties of sport
climbing imaginable. It covers the whole spectrum of grades; from the easiest
classic lines to the most groundbreaking routes at the cutting edge.
The sheer variety of shapes and formations is enough to inspire awe in even the
most hardened climber - from small pockets, smooth slopers, sharp crimps and
bizarre tufas, limestone has it all.
Every hold within our limestone range has been carefully and painstakingly hand
carved to mimic the rock textures and forms found in places such as Buoux and
Ceuse in the south of France, to Rai ay beach in Thailand.
The range offers a vast collection of holds that will no doubt recall fond memories
to any lucky enough to have sampled their delights.

LimestoneCrimps
The limestone crimps have been designed not just to give a typical edge, but an edge that
requires precision and accuracy.
Theses 20 small to medium crimps can be used on any wall at any angle to make any grade of
problem. These crimps used in conjunction with other holds in the range offer wider range of
Range
We have developed our training range to appeal to all
motivated climbers and all angles of board - if you’re keen
on training, look no further. Each set has been designed
with an emphasis on clean lines and simplicity; here you
will find basic geometric shapes with rounded edges to
prevent unnecessary skin damage or bruising - to enable
you to achieve the goals of your training programme
unhindered. The famous Bleaustone fine surface texture
has also been used to great effect on these holds,
resembling the skin preserving properties of wood but
with all the predictable friction of resin.
The range consists of a variety of crimps from positive
to rounded, a selection of pinches, a set of slopers - with
one set designed for extremely steep walls. We also offer
a range of symmetrical holds to enable you to construct a
system board or simply produce a mirror arrangement on
your wall. Our symmetrical holds also include 1, 2 and 3
fingered pockets designed for a variety of wall angles.

TrainingStoneCompactBoard
Designed with one-armed deadhangs in mind, the Compact Board has been kept narrow to
allow the climber to stay as central as possible within the doorframe during passive and active
hangs. The symmetrical nature and progression of small holds also permits effective two handed
training for beginner and intermediate climbers to help work towards one armed deadhangs at a
later date. The Compact Board has the following features:
• 1 x Central positive cling crimp – specifically designed for one-armed pull-ups.
• 2 x Small flat crimps / medium three finger open holds.
• 2 x Small open hand / sloping crimps.
• 1 x Hard central sloper (can be matched & half crimped).
• 2 x Medium cling grips / large open hand.
• Narrow width to keep the climber away from the doorframe.
• Progressive hold sizing to challenge and vary deadhangs.
• Super smooth BleauStone texture to minimise skin wear whilst maintaining friction – sore skin is no longer
a limiting factor.
TrainingStoneLongBoard
The Long Board has been developed to provide the ultimate two-handed fingerboard available
today. Traditional ergonomic warm up jugs lead into an array of small crimps and slopers which
have been kept far apart in order to focus on open positions and maximise the effectiveness
of travelling pull-ups and biased hangs. For one-armed work, a large central thread has been
provided which can also be used to affix pulleys for lessening body weight; making deadhanging
the smaller holds a progressive training option. The Long Board has the following features:
• 1 x Central thread hold for one armers and attaching pulleys.
• 1 x Medium sloper.
• 2 x Small warm-up jugs.
• 2 x Medium flat cling grips / medium open holds.
• 2 x Small incut crimps.
• 2 x Small slopers / small rounded crimps.
• 2 x Small open / sloping cling grips.
• 2 x Small two/three finger open pockets.
• Maximised width for training open positions.
• Super smooth BleauStone texture to minimise skin wear whilst maintaining friction – sore skin is no longer
a limiting factor.

Hold design
and Carving
When it comes to designing each hold the approach is non-random. Each hold with in a set has
been carefully thought out before it is carved. This ensures the best possible variety in terms of
left or right handedness, positivity, number of fingers used and the size of the hold. It also means
you are receiving holds that compliment all of the others within the series and gives you as much
variety as possible.
Each hold has been carved by hand and the level of detail that he reaches is almost
microscopic. Using only simple tools, time is spent perfecting the aesthetic and ergonomic
features of each hold as well as ensuring each hold offers a unique and wide variety of positions
for the route setter.
123

Technical
Design Features
Dual-Fixings
Cap-head (8mm-H) and Countersunk (6mm-H) fixings can be used with all holds (except screw-on holds).
Reduced/Hollow-back holds
All large holds within the series, such as Gritstone XXXL and Slopers come “reduced” or with a “hollow-back”
The materials used with these holds differs to our usual mix being both stronger and lighter making them a lot
easier to set with.
125

Care and cleaning
Cleaning
When cleaning your holds it is recommend that only a high-pressure washer is used. Cleaning
holds with any detergents will vastly speed up deterioration of the surface colour.
Care: When resetting routes it is important to take care not to drop the holds, Whilst every effort
is made to ensure this type of treatment can be handled by the hold, repeated impacts will
increase the chance of the holds fracturing whilst being affixed to an ACS. Any chips that result
can be sharp and should be sanded/linished to remove these edges.
Fixing the holds to the wall
The recommended torque settings have been calculated for a hold affixed to a typical flat
climbing structure. The values quoted should be enough to stop a hold from spinning, when the
maximum moment is applied by the climber.
Norm conformity - EN 12572
All Bleaustone climbing holds are in accordance with EN 12572.

Recommended Torque Settings
Hold size:
Torque Max:
Small
20 Nm
Medium
25 Nm
Large
30 Nm
X-Large
35 Nm
Reduced Holds*
20 Nm
The values quoted are show as a recommended guide only. As there are many factors that govern the
forces holding a hold to a wall and whether it will spin or not during use e.g. Friction Coefficients, holdbase,
wall surface and texture.
* Reduced/hollow-back Climbing holds
These holds have been designed to be used mainly with the screw fixing holes and should NOT be used
solely with the bolt hole. The bolt-hole should only be used as guide to rotate and position the hold into
place.
Maximum Torque settings
Whilst the material has been designed to handle a significant load pressure when affixed to an uneven
surface, the likelihood of fracture is increased due to increased stresses. For this reason, and because
the large number of variables that effect how and when a hold breaks it is impossible to quote a valid
maximum torque setting for any hold.
Colour
Our colours will be consistent within each order and from order to order. The UV stability of our
standard colours is of the highest possible e.g. Red, Yellow, Orange, Blue, Black, White and are
recommended for outdoor use. Fluorescent pigments have a Low UV stability and are therefore
NOT recommended for use outdoors.
Climbing Hold Sizing Chart
The sizing chart allows a hold to be categorized in terms of its maximum hold-base diameter (Figure 1). Where the aspect
ratio between the major and minor axis of the base of a hold will vary, the major axis, a, should be taken as the maximum
diameter (figure. 2).
When using or buying climbing holds it should be assumed that:
XS (0-50mm) holds can only be held with a maximum of 2/3 fingers and/or are designed to be used as foot holds
S (50-80) holds can be held with a larger proportion of the hand with up to 4 fingers
M (80-130mm) holds should fit comfortably in one whole hand e.g. the hand of the average adult with an average span
between 180 – 220mm.
L (130-210mm) holds begin to except two hands with some minor adjustment of hand placement
XL (210-340mm) except two hands comfortably and allow considerable adjustment of hand position
XXXL (340-550mm) except two hands comfortably and allow many varying positions for the hands.
With this in mind, the first two Sizes of Extra Small (XS) and Small (S) holds are chosen based on average hand/
finger width i.e. the average width of the ¾ hand (XS) and full hand (S), taking measurement at the first knuckles of
the fingers.
To suit the above assumptions. Consecutive sizes are calculated as the sum of the previous two. For example,
Medium holds(M) will have a maximum base diameter of the sum of (XS) and (S) holds and Large holds(L) will have a
maximum base diameter of the sum of (S) and (M) holds and so on i.e. 50mm + 80mm = 130mm (M) and 80mm +
130mm = 210mm (L). This follows from the Fibonacci sequence in mathematics and is set out in table 1.
The angle of a climbing wall is measured as the angle from the floor to the climbing wall plane i.e. a slab will measure
less than 90º and overhanging greater than 90º and a roof measured as 180º (see figure 3).
Wall angle rating
Some of the holds within each set will still feel positive on a range of overhanging wall angles. The maximum angle
rating that holds within a set can be affixed will be quoted along side each set and should be noted that not ALL holds
within that specific set will be positive on this quoted maximum.
Bolt hole depth
The minimum and maximum bolt-hole depth, d, is quoted along side each set and is measured from the base of the
hold to the bolt seat, see figure 4. This number will allow you to choose the correct length of bolt according to your
wall and thus fixing point depth.
