Following a year of growth to achieve
comprehensive coverage of UK ports,
Hutton’s was delighted to be a finalist in
this year’s Mail News & Media Business
Awards 2010.
The awards ceremony was presented by
Harry Gration of the BBC's Look North
programme and Hutton's was in the
premier category of Business of the Year
Award competing against some serious
opposition.
Although Hutton's didn't top the group
this year they were presented with a
finalist runners-up award which was a
fantastic achievement in a tough group
and a great acknowledgement of the
team's achievement and company’s
growth.
Hutton’s Managing Director Alex Taylor,
outlined how four strategic acquisitions in
recent years has given the company an
unrivalled coverage of mainland Britain.
He said: “We now provide a one-stop shop
service to commercial shipping visiting all
UK ports, vessels which can be in port for
less than twenty four hours and,
increasingly, require timed-supply delivery
via barge while here.”

Are you paying
too much for
logistics?
Hidden delivery costs can add
thousands to stores loading, warns
Alex Taylor, Managing Director of
Hutton’s, who has added a new
section to the company’s website to
help customers take account of likely
additional charges when they arrange
deliveries at particular ports.
“Due to legislation like ISPS and Health and
Safety regulations there are an increasing
number of restrictions on suppliers being able
to deliver direct to vessels, especially to
tankers in terminals where most deliveries are
made by barge. These barge costs can be very
high and add a large ‘hidden’ cost to their
stores budgets.
“When placing orders we are concerned that
many customers just look at the cost of the
stores and do not take into account the
additional cost of transport to the vessel. But I
have heard of cases where the cost of barge
delivery has been as high as $10,000!
“For example, Rotterdam is a major hub for
ship stores and is well known for it's
competitive chandlers but many deliveries
require the use of a barge and barges in
Rotterdam are very expensive and can result in
huge bills which are often hidden in the Ship's
Agent's disbursement account. I want to
ensure that Hutton’s customers are aware of
these problems so that they can plan
accordingly – either to avoid barge transfer or
to take account of it.”
Acting to help customers with important
information about loading costs at various UK
ports, Hutton’s has added a new table to its
website which advises customers of any
supply restrictions on UK berths. Alex Taylor
explains: “We are keen to assist our customers
to minimise their supply chain costs.”
Alex points out that UK ports do not always
suffer these problems and often allow
supplying from a truck, even in oil terminals.
He advises: “Many berths at oil terminals in
Tees, Milford Haven and Immingham do not
require barges which can reduce the overall
supply ‘bottom line’.”

Cost and quality take centre stage
as ship suppliers gather in Dubai
Ship suppliers from throughout the world met in Dubai last month for the Annual Convention
of the International Ship Suppliers & Services Association (ISSA).

Cost savings, quality supply and panindustry
co-operation were some of the
issues which delegates spent two
productive days discussing. Customers,
including leading industry ship owners and ship
managers, addressed the convention to enable
ship suppliers to gain a better understanding of
what expectations they face.
Hutton’s was represented at this important
industry event by Managing Director Alex Taylor
who reports: “The ISSA Convention was a
fascinating opportunity to really consider our
work in great detail. I am happy to report that
Hutton’s is on the right track in terms of
addressing our customers’ needs and that we
are meeting and even exceeding industry
requirements and expectations.

Top Tips For Feeling Better
Winter is the time when many of us suffer from
colds or even flu which is never fun and
especially not when you are working at sea.
Here are some handy hints from Hutton’s
General Manager John MacDonald on how to
stay well and minimise the inconvenience of
colds and flu this winter.
Top Tips For Avoiding Cold And Flu
Symptoms
Drink plenty of fluids - these can help your
body to flush out any viruses or infections
you may pick up.
Get plenty of rest - if you are tired and feeling
worn out your body's immune system is not
going to be at its best to fight off any
infections or viruses you might pick up over
the winter.
Eat a balanced diet which includes lots of
fresh fruit and vegetables - these can give you
the vitamins and nutrients your body needs
to help keep you fit and healthy.
Keep warm - but don't over do it. Making sure
that you get plenty of fresh air is also
important!
Do plenty of exercise - exercise helps to
stimulate your immune system.

relationships make all the difference to service delivery and events like this
provide excellent meeting opportunities as well as valuable industry
discussions.”
Particular highlights in the packed Convention agenda included some
interesting views from Lars Modin of International Tanker Management
who told delegates that he believed customers spend 80% of their time
trying to get the best price for general consumables from chandlers, which
may be an easy option but he believes is the wrong option. His advice to
buyers was to spend the majority of their time considering ship spares,
which are of high value, and negotiating OEM prices and contracts which
will result in larger savings.
Future developments in ship supply were at the forefront of the
presentation by One Maritime, a new internet-based search platform
specially designed for the maritime industry and due to launch worldwide
in January. One Maritime uses the latest technology to provide a global
online resource for finding spares and supplies which aims to transform the
way customers and ship suppliers do business.
Hutton’s is in talks with One Maritime to discuss adding our comprehensive
supply catalogue to their system. Alex says: “We are always very interested
in new technology as a means of improving service delivery and increasing
customer satisfaction.”
A popular presentation was the open forum debate with three leading
shipmanagers: Roberto Giorgi of V.Ships, Rajaish Bajpaee of Bernhard

Take a remedy which will help relieve the
symptoms you are experiencing. Try one of

Drink plenty of fluids, such as water and
vitamin-rich fruit drinks. Avoid caffeinecontaining
drinks such as coffee, tea, cola and
other fizzy drinks as these are diuretics which
could cause further dehydration.
Get as much rest as you can. If you are well
enough to go into work, make sure you have
some early nights.
Inhaling steam (sitting with your head above
a bowl of hot water) can help to ease
congestion. Try placing a towel over your
head, closing your eyes and breathing deeply
to maximise the benefits.
Eat healthy foods, such as fruit and
vegetables. Wrap up warm and keep the
room temperature comfortably warm, but
not hot - about 20°C - and open the bedroom
window a little so fresh air can circulate.
Humidity may help to ease a cough and
congestion - place a bowl of water near the
radiator in your bedroom.

If you are suffering from a blocked nose,
prop yourself up in bed with pillows to help
ease your breathing at night.
Try to avoid smoking or being around
people that smoke, as smoke irritates the
nose and throat.
If your symptoms persist or get worse, ask your
pharmacist for advice on treatments.

conclude the year by attending this influential and large industry event to
confirm that our approach is in line with customer expectations and we are
at the forefront of industry developments. We head into 2011 now with a
positive attitude and renewed determination to be the best!”

Employee of
the month
Dedication to duty, adaptability and a
willingness to be flexible have led to two
more Hutton’s employees being awarded our
prestigious Employee of the Month awards.
For November we congratulate sales
representative Steve Ellerton, who has worked
for Hutton’s for ten years, for his adaptability
and willingness to learn how to use a new
electronic system. Hull-based Steve rose to this
difficult challenge – well done Steve!
December’s award goes to Deputy Manager
Darren Murphy who demonstrated real
flexibility by relocating to Aberdeen from
Wales. This is a big move for Darren and we
wish him well.

Welcome
Hutton’s is delighted to welcome two new members of staff
to its Hull head office – Steve Green and Fran Fawcett.
Snowy ship supply
Britain has been gripped by icy weather
recently and Hutton’s was not immune from
the snowy onslaught! Our Head Office at Hull,
Yorkshire, was blanketed by a thick covering of
snow up to a foot deep in places which
provided some interesting challenges for staff
and for our transport network.
We are delighted to report that Hutton’s staff
demonstrated their resourcefulness and
Steve Green (left) has joined
us in the role of Warehouse &
Transport Supervisor, having
been a transport manager at
3G for more than 12 years and
a warehouse manager for
Autobar for 10 yrs.
Fran Fawcett (right) is a
welcome addition to our sales
team in the role of Sales
Administrator. Interestingly,
Fran worked as a professional
photographer before taking a
year off to travel in Australia.
No doubt she is noticing a big
difference between the
weather here in Hull at
present and sunny Australia!

dedication and rallied to the task to ensure we

Many put on their wellington boots and
walked to work through knee-deep snow
while others literally dug their cars out of
mounds of snow to drive slowly on the
treacherous roads.
