If you have a 1-inch-diameter threadless steering tube (the old standard) and a stem for a 1- 1 ⁄8 -inch threadless steering tube (the current standard), you can get a slotted aluminum reduction bushing (normally supplied with a new stem) to allow the stem to be used with the 1-inch steering tube.

Stems for threaded steering tubes (Figs. 11.6–11.8) have a “quill” that extends into the steering tube of the fork and a shaft, or extension, that connects to the handlebar clamp.
