WHAT IS YOUR ROUTINE LEADING UP TO A RODEO RUN? I
haven’t been feeding him before I run because he seems sluggish,
so I feed him after I run. He doesn’t take a lot of warming up, if I
am on him too long before I run he just isn’t quite as snappy. I try
to get on no more than 45 minutes before I run. It takes me 10-15
minutes to warm him up, then I stretch his front legs, then for a
few girls before me I just walk him and then we are ready to run.
If I get on too early, I will just get off and stand with him until it
is time to get back on.
DO YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC CONDITIONING PROGRAM FOR YOUR
HORSE WHILE YOU ARE ON THE ROAD? I have never really been
on the road a whole lot so I don’t have a routine yet. When
I am at home I long trot him a lot and once or twice a week
I rope on him to keep his mind right and keep him in good
shape.
WHAT LEAD YOU TO BECOME A BARREL RACER? I didn’t start
out loving barrel racing. I just didn’t have the horses to consistently
win at this level. I have always liked to run barrels but it
wasn’t my favorite thing until I got a horse (Skeeter) that loved
to run barrels. Roping was always my thing in high school and
college until I started working Skeeter. He was easy to train
and liked to do it. I really do love it (barrel racing) now, I think
I have turned into a little bit of a barrel racer!
IF YOU WERE TO SHARE A TRAINING OR RODEOING TIP, WHAT
WOULD IT BE? One thing that I had a lot of trouble with in
the past is that I knew I was good but I would get somewhere
and think everyone was better than me. If you know you are
good and you know you can win, don’t let any of those negative
thoughts enter your mind. I went into the College Finals
knowing that my horse was good enough to win and I could
win. I had to keep my confi dence and not change my plans to
win. If I would went in there trying to run him harder than
normal just to beat the other girls, it probably wouldn’t have
worked out.
