Greetings from Vivian L. Smith
It is with a spirit of thankfulness, great joy and gladness that I greet all Delegates, Affiliates,
Corporate Sponsors, Partners and Visitors to the 52 nd National Convention and the 70 th
Founder’s Day of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc.
Welcome to what has been planned as a historic review of our achievements and challenges
over the 70 years since Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune’s vision to organize a national
“organization of organizations”. Dr. Dorothy I. Height has continued the vision with
strategies that have led to expanded services focusing on health, education, economics, the
family, social issues and technology.
The agenda for 52 nd National Convention will serve to remind us of where we have been,
how far we have come on our journey and will help us begin to chart the course for our
future. This is indeed a special time in our history. We have tried to highlight significant
historical events. The Dorothy I. Height Leadership Institute and workshops have been
designed to focused on issues relevant to NCNW’s growth and development. With renewed
commitment, we will work during the Convention towards devising solutions to present day
challenges and issues that are in keeping with the mission and goals of our great Council.
The Founder’s Day observance will acknowledge those “on whose shoulders we stand”
while recognizing the commendable service of our National Affiliates, State Conveners and
Community Base Sections. NCNW is the sum of the contributions of all of our members!!
Thanks to each individual and group for the contributions that you continue to make in
advancing the mission and goals of our Council.
On a personal note, I would like to thank Dr. Height for allowing me the
opportunity to work with some of the most committed and dedicated people on this
earth— I salute the 2005 Convention Planning Committee and thank them
individually and collectively for giving of their time and talents in planning
NCNW’s 52 nd National Convention.
Sincerely,
Vivian L. Smith
Chair, 52 nd National Convention
Legacy Life Member
National Council of Negro Women

Greetings to NCNW Members, Delegates, Youth and Friends.
A warm welcome to everyone who has gathered for
the 52 nd National Convention in Washington, D.C. the
Title “70 years: Challenges & Achievements, Living the
Legacy.” This theme challenges NCNW members and
youth to continue achievements for the next 70 years.
It is a tremendous honor for me to have been given
the charge to chair the youth convention. Dr. Height and
Mary McLeod Bethune both stressed that the National Council of Negro Women must be
an inclusive group that understands the importance of nourishing the youth to sustain
growth in this organization. The youth convention committee has worked very hard on
putting together a wonderful and an educational experience for the youth. I would like to
thank the youth planning committee for their hours of hard work.
The youth convention will continue the Town Hall Meeting “The War on Girls:
Part III” With a distinguished panel. The Town Hall Meeting will develop an action plan
for the needs of girls with future meetings and recommendations. We will also have a
Dorothy I. Height Oratorical Contest and other informative sessions. The youth will have
a visible presence during this convention. Time permitting, all are welcome to attend and
participate in any of our youth sessions. Please enjoy all the wonderful events planned
during the convention week and thank you for all your support of our youth programs and
may God Bless and keep you.
Sincerely,
Zillah Jackson Wesley, LICSW
Youth Convention Chair

God gives us joy, that we may give; He gives us joy that we may share.
Sometimes he gives us loads to lift that we may learn to bear. For life is better,
when we give and life is sweeter when we share; heavy loads rest lightly too;
when we have learned to berar and share.
