On Tuesday, May 11th, 2010, the
Delta College CalWORKs
Program presented our 5th annual
CalWORKs Student Success
Ceremony. We are so excited and honored
each year to celebrate the successes of our
wonderful students. Again this year, they did
not disappoint!
This year, for the period covering Summer
2009 through Spring 2010, we honored
185 CalWORKs students and their many
accomplishments. These 185 students
obtained 143 AA or AS Degrees and 56
Certificates. 99 students made the Dean’s
List and 43 made the President’s List.
In addition, two of our students received
the Soroptomist Women’s Opportunity
Award, which is granted to women who have
overcome enormous obstacles in their quest
for a better life. Congratulations to Violeta
Gonzalez and especially Christina Hine who
also went on to win the regional award after
winning locally!
Many of our students overcome great
obstacles to be successful at Delta. Some
of those obstacles are simply a result of
the CalWORKs rules and regulations. Our
CalWORKs staff members provide a great
deal of support, services, resources and

advocacy to help students get through the
complicated policies and constant changes in
regulations as well as the struggles in their
daily lives!
We were truly lucky to have several
fabulous speakers at this year’s Student
Success Ceremony. Representing the
Chancellor’s Office CalWORKs Program,
Lily Hunnemeder-Bergfelt encouraged our
students with her own community college
story. Our student speaker was former
CalWORKs student Scarlette Aranda,
who now works in her field of study and
is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree.
And, finally, with a truly motivating and
inspiring story, our keynote speaker was the
Honorable Judge Cinda Fox with her moving
account of how she learned one cannot
always control the life one is given, but that
we all have the power to control how we
respond to events in our lives and how we
move forward from them. We can always
make the best of any situation. She has found
a new calling and our students were truly
motivated to keep pursuing their dreams
and goals. For, as Ralph Waldo Emerson said,
“What lies behind us and what lies before
us are tiny matters, compared to what lies
within us”.

SJDC CalWORKs Students Receive The
Soroptomist Women’s Award
Soroptimist is an international organization for business
and professional women who work to improve the lives of
women and girls in local communities throughout the world.
Soroptimists are women at their best, working to help other
women to be their best.
Every year the Soroptimist International of Tracy gives
awards and scholarships to deserving women. The Women’s
Opportunity Award is the largest of these scholarships and
allows the winner to advance to a regional competition.
This award was established to assist women, who have the
primary financial responsibility for their families, to obtain
the skills, training, and education necessary to improve their
employment status and their family’s standard of living.
This April the Soroptimist International of Tracy honored
two San Joaquin Delta College CalWORKs students,
Christina Hine and Violeta Gonzalez, as winners of their
Women’s Opportunity Award.
Christina Hine won 1st place, a $1000.00 scholarship, and
a chance to compete in the regional Women’s Opportunity
Awards competition in Fresno, CA. Christina is a single
mother and a full-time student. She works in the Child
Development Center on campus and volunteers in the
community. Christina is working on her Early Childhood

Violeta Gonzalez, SJDC CalWORKs Student and Soroptomist Award

Education Master Teacher Certificate and plans to transfer to
the University of the Pacific next year. Drawing on her
personal experience, drive, and unique perspective Christina
gave a moving speech that won her the 1st place award
and a $3000.00 scholarship at the regional competition in
Fresno.
Violeta Gonzalez won 2nd place and a $500.00 scholarship.
Violeta is a single mother, who has just completed her
Communication: Speech Language Pathology Assistant
(SLPA) Associate in Science Degree, and certificate, and
her Liberal Arts and Sciences Associate in Arts Degree.
She is currently attending school part-time in the summer
and volunteers in the community. She will transfer, but is
unsure where she will go. While accepting the Women’s
Opportunity Award in Tracy, Violeta was unexpectedly
called on to speak. Violeta delivered a heartfelt and
inspiring speech that was well received and one of the
highlights of the awards ceremony.
The Delta College CalWORKs staff congratulates Christina
and Violeta on their accomplishments and their well
deserved recognition. We wish them the best in their future
endeavors.

Meet the Newest Members of the
SJDC CalWORKs Team
I’ve enjoyed working in the CalWORKs department since October 2009. My
current position working as a Senior Office Assistant brings new challenges every
day. I assist the Director, Academic Advisors, Resource Specialist, and Student
Programs Specialist with tasks related to helping our students reach their academic
goals. I look forward to meeting all of our students and helping you in any way
possible. Since I’m relatively new to this role, I know there is a lot more to learn but
I welcome the challenge and look forward to continuing to grow in my career path.
It is indeed an honor and privilege to be part of the CalWORKs program at
Delta College. I look forward to meeting new faces and becoming part of a
team where caring and concern about the student, are of paramount importance.
My background in working with students with a wide range of needs and goals
hopefully will be helpful to the mission of the CalWORKs program.
“CalWORKs has been the bridge in my life. It has linked
my dreams to my reality. CalWORKs has supported and
assisted me in rising above my circumstances and cross
over to receiving the end of my hope and faith. Through
the financial and emotional support I have been able to not
only stay on track in my educational plan, but also reach for
higher education with confidence and be fully persuaded that
I can do anything I set my heart to.
Thank you for helping me improve the lives of my daughters,
and my own. I am now reaching the other side of the bridge
and getting closer to being self-sufficient again and the bright
future that awaits. I wouldn’t have been able to cross this
bridge without you.

“The CalWORKs Dept. at SJDC is by far the best. The staff
have helped me in so many ways, not just school related.
Everyone encourages you and pushes you to do better. SJDC
CalWORKs goes above and beyond expectation. I love that
not one person but everyone always has upbeat attitudes and
their personalities are awesome. When I go there, I know I
feel special.
Because of SJDC CalWORKs, I’m two months shy of
graduating my program of study at Delta College. I could
not have gotten this far without them.

My opinion on the services I have received from Delta College CalWORKs is that they have fully helped me,
from financial aid help, course registration, referrals from my Resource Specialist. SJDC CalWORKs has
blessed me with a group of angels, who support me as well as motivate me. My three children are so happy
to see me continue my education, (quote from my kids: “my mommy goes to school like we do”). They have
given me a great sense of hope reminding me that it’s never wrong or too late to continue your education,
because to quote the SJDC CalWORKs Program staff “we are here to help you succeed.”

SJDC Implements Pay to Stay!
Beginning with registration for the Fall 2010 semester, students’ fees are due at the time of registration. Students
have 10 business days from the date they register to pay all tuition and/or enrollment fees, or they will be
automatically dropped from the class(es).
Students are responsible for:
* Paying all fees at the time of registration
* Keeping Delta College informed of all address changes (address changes can be made by completed a Change of
Information form and submitting it to Admissions & Records)
* Reading email from Delta College; all reminders and notification will be sent via email
* Checking e-mail on a regular basis
* Meeting all published deadlines
Students are liable for payment of all charges for all courses for which the student register, whether or not the student
attends the course. To have the charges removed, the student must personally drop the course by the Refund Deadline.

Sign Up to Receive SJDC Emergency Text Alerts
San Joaquin Delta College is now offering an SMS-based
emergency notification service for your mobile phone. In the
event of an emergency, SJDC students, staff, faculty and others
will be alerted via a text message, in real-time, important
security information.

The 2010-2011 Community Connections Resource Directory
Now Available!
The San Joaquin Delta College CalWORKs Program is proud to announce
that our 2010-2011 Community Connections Resource Directory has been
completed.
This Directory contains information about community services available in
San Joaquin County and is a tool designed to arm our students with resources
to address existing barriers. Because of our collaboration with the Local Child
Care Planning Council, this Directory is now widely utilized by community
organizations and public agencies, to better serve and connect individuals and
families to the myriad of resources available in San Joaquin County.
