Sixth Annual Northern
Lights Lantern Festival
On Saturday August 8 from 4 to 10:30
pm, everyone is invited to Merv Sullivan
Park, the Pit, on Kencrest Ave. Halifax’s
north end. Enjoy family fun, free BBQ,
games, children’s rides, bouncy games,
arts and crafts, basketball competition,
musical entertainment and lantern making
competition. The evening ends with
a fireworks demonstration.
Amistad visits Halifax
The freedom schooner Amistad will
visit Halifax from August 1 to 9, 2009.
This visit marks Black Freedom 175, a
celebration of the 175th anniversary of
the abolition of slavery. In addition to
participating in a variety of anniversary
events, Amistad will be open for public
tours while berthed at the Maritime
Museum of the Atlantic’s wharf.
Freedom of the City Parade
On August 21, 2009, the 78th Highlanders
will present their annual parade
of their Colours and will exercise their
Freedom of the Halifax Regional Municipality
at the Grand Parade, as a tribute to
all British military units that served in
Halifax from 1749 to 1906.
The parade will begin at the Halifax
National Historic Site shortly after the
noon gun. The parade will proceed to
Grand Parade, City Hall and then to
Government House.
Events at the Maritime
Museum of the Atlantic
On Sundays at 11:30, 1:30 and 3:30
p.m., join the staff of the Maritime
Museum of the Atlantic to learn about
the music of the sea. Sea songs and
sea shanties are an important part of life
at sea and of the cultures of the Maritime
Provinces.

Golf Tournament
The 39th annual Adm Porter Golf
Tournament will be held on August 19,
2009 at the Hartlen Point Forces Golf
club with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m,
registration no later than 7 a.m. Eligible
personnel: a. Nav comm 277, r277 b.
Net(c) 284/286 c. Former nradop 274,
sig sea 261, nav sig 262, rad sea 251,
commtech 252 d. Former and serving
Naval Comm officers, former and present
members of n61 f. and guests.
Entrance fees: Hartlen point members
$25 (with membership number), all others
$45. Entrance fee includes a hot dog,
hamburger and salad lunch as well as
prizes. Entries can be made in person to
any of the organizing committee or by
mail to Adm Porter golf c/o Steve
Chartier or Mike Gordon, HMCS Preserver,
PO box 99000, Stn Forces, Halifax,
NS, B3K 5X5. Payments must be
made in advance by cheque, cash or
money order no later than August 1,
2009, payable to the Adm Porter Golf
Tournament. Teams will consist of four
players with at least one player from any
of the above mentioned trades/organizations.
Format will be Texas scramble.
In keeping with last year’s tourney,
players can donate an extra $5 on site
for the closest to the pin contest on all
four par three holes. The money will be
donated to the Nova Scotia Cancer Centre
in honour of Rick Mohr. Organizing

Halifax Electric Flyers
Association seeks
military/DND members
The Halifax Electric Flyers Association
would like to invite any military/
DND members to join our club. We are a
radio controlled model aircraft association
flying only electric powered models.
We fly out of the Shannon Park fields on
Saturday and Sunday mornings. If you
are interested in finding out more information

Looking for NATO
and NORAD veterans
The NATO Veterans Organization is
looking for CF members who served as
part of NATO and NORAD since 1949.
This includes CF members who served
with the navy at sea, with the army in
Germany, France, the Balkans and
Afghanistan, and with the air force in
France, Germany and elsewhere. The
aim of the organization is to recognize
NATO and NORAD veterans and to honour
the 1,496 Canadians (570 military
members and 926 dependents) buried in
44 cemeteries in Europe since the Second
World War. To join or to find out

Military soccer officials wanted
The CF sports program is looking for
military members who are interested in
becoming soccer officials, or for those
who are currently soccer officials but
are not taking part in the military sports
programs. For those who participate in
the CF programs it is possible to find
financial assistance with regards to registration
fees and course fees. There also
are opportunities to travel within your
region to participate at the regional
championship, outside your region for
the national championship or possibly,
once qualified, outside the country for
international events. If you are interested
or if you know someone who is,
please contact your base or wing sports
coordinators. They will put you in touch
with your regional chief official. If your
local contact is away, please email me at
graham.white2@forces.gc.ca I am currently
the national chief official for soccer.

305 Sackville Sea Cadets
welcomes new cadets
305 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps
Sackville is currently enrolling youth
ages 12 to 18 in the Sea Cadet program.
Learn marksmanship, seamanship, sailing,
marching and more for free. Uniforms
are provided through the program
at no cost to the cadet or the parents.
There are many opportunities to learn
and to make new friends who will last a
lifetime. We parade every Wednesday
night from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Leslie
Thomas Junior High School on Metropolitan
Avenue in Lower Sackville.
Come out and see what it is all about,
talk to the cadets and see what a great
organization it is. Be part of the team.
