Navy receives a place of honour in Halifax
By Blake Patterson
Special to the Trident
“There’s no doubt, the sun is shining
on Canada’s navy.”
That was how Chief of Defence
Staff (CDS) Gen. Walter Natynczyk
described the sight of more
than 2,000 sailors and other members
of MARLANT formed up on
the Grand Parade infront of City
Hall in Halifax on May 4.
The parade, including more than
1,000 sailors, was led by RAdm
Paul Maddison, Commander JTFA
and MARLANT, marching from
the Rainbow Gate outside HMC
Dockyard to the Grand Parade to
receive the Freedom of the City in
recognition of the 100th anniversary
of the Canadian Navy – a navy
that Gen. Natynczyk said is, “Sailor
for sailor, ship for ship, the finest
navy in the world.”
The event marked the 100th anniversary
of the royal assent of the
Naval Services Act on May 4,
1910. The Act created the Canadian
Naval Service and gave the
MCS Fredericton returned to
to join the Navy’s biggest
party of the year and possibly, of
the century.
On Tuesday May 4, the Navy’s
100th anniversary,a piper stood on
On the jetty was the Stadacona
Band and dozens of family members
and friends of the ship’s company, carrying
Canadianflags,balloons,
flowers,and posters to greet
their loved ones.
One sailor dropped to one knee
and proposed to his girlfriend, encouragedby
a roar of approval and
applausefrom the crowd, while another
sailor met his baby sonfor the
first time.
If that wasn’t enough, there was
also a white stretch limousine waiting
“Your outstanding service is at
the very heart of the glorious history
that we’re celebrating this centennial
year,” Gen. Natynczyk told
the military members on parade.
And turning to the Canadian Naval
veterans who attended the event
and were given a place ofhonour
near the front of the parade, he said.
“Your navy is ready aye ready for
another 100 years of service.”
The granting of Freedom of the
City is a military tradition dating
back to 15th century England. Before
acity would admit a military
unit inside its walls, the chief constable
would demand to know the
reason soldiers wished to enter the
city, and then escort their commander
to the chambers of city
council. If the leaders felt the unit
couldbe trusted, it was granted the
privilege known as Freedom of the
City.
When the paradefrom Dockyard
arrived at the Grand Parade, Halifax
Regional Police Chief Frank
Beazley challenged RAdm Maddison.
The Admiral was then escorted
six months old and weighed about
70 pounds when Cpl Reed deployed.
Now, “Ripley is over 100
noted.
Following its October 25 departure,
“There are close encounters out
helicopter or our boarding team,
it’s all of our allies. Whether it’s a
NATO ship or a coalition ship,
we’re all out there on the same
seas safe. There were instances
when we were involved a little
closer than some people might like
to be, but that’s our job.”
Patrolling in such a large region
requires what Cdr Waddell described
as “a sustained commitment
over the short to near term and
perhaps the long term, but we need
conditions for success ashore if
we’re going to stop the flow of pirates
I think we’ll need to have a presence
there, in the future. I would hope
we would have a presence there to
do our bit.”

Canada’s Naval
Commanders
VAdm Harry G. DeWolf,
CBE, DSO, DSC, CD
By Cdr (ret’d) Len Canfield
This is eighth ina series.
VAdm Harry DeWolf, who
served as Chief of the Naval Staff
(CNS) from 1956 to 1960, has long
been recognized as Canada’s most
decorated SecondWorldWar naval
commander and an officer who
played a significant role in the development
of the peacetime Royal
Canadian Navy (RCN).
DeWolf, a native of Bedford,
NS, enrolledas a cadet in the Royal
Naval College of Canada (RNCC)
near the end of the First WorldWar.
Following RNCC training, his career
followed afamiliar path for
young Canadian naval officers of
the time. He served in several ships
of the Royal Navy (RN), including
HMS President and Excellent
(1921- 25),and returned to Canada
for service in the destroyers HMC
Ships Patriot and Champlain. In
1930 he received his first command,
the trawler Festubert; he later
served in Vancouver and Skeena
and in 1937 attended the RN Staff
College at Greenwich.
At the outbreak of the Second
World War, DeWolf was CO of St
Laurent. In 1940, St Laurent took
part in the evacuation of British and
French forces from France and
fired the Navy’s first shots in anger.
He was promoted commander and
came ashorefor the next two years,
serving first as staff officer operations
to Commanding Officer Atlantic
Coast and then Director of
Plans at Naval Service Headquarters
(NSHQ).
DeWolf’s biographer Michael
Whitby says “Exercising... pragmatic
nationalism, DeWolf in policy
formulation at HQ andat strategic
convoy conferences where he
represented the RCN view to senior
US and British officers, helped find
abalance between the RCN’s desirefor
increasedautonomy and the
demands of war...and earned him
recognition as one of the RCN’s
most gifted staff officers.”
In 1943, DeWolf was back at sea
as CO of the new destroyer Haida,
the RCN’s top sea scrapper of the
Second World War. After several
convoys to northern Russia, Haida
joined Plymouth Command in January
1944. During the next nine
months Haida engaged in a series
ues to play in the world today.
“As we begin our second century,
your Navy continues to protect
Canada’s interests at home and
abroad,” he said, noting the return
to Halifax that morning of HMCS
Fredericton after a six-month deployment
on OP SAIPH.. The admiral
also noted the recent response
by Athabaskan and Halifax
to providehumanitarian aid to Haiti
after adevastating earthquake.
“Your navy is as relevant today
as it has been throughout its rich
history,” he said. “Make no mistake, although
most Canadians live
far from these rocky coasts, Canada
is and has always been intrinsically
linked to the sea.”
RAdm Maddison invited all
Canadians to look towards their
coasts and recognize the huge impacts
the oceans have on our daily
lives. Ninety per cent of world
commerce, he said, depends on the
ocean highways. And as such, any
threat to the free and regulated use
of the world’s oceans is therefore a
threat to Canada and to our way of
life.
“As we begin our secondcentury
of service, we in the Navy commit
ourselves anew to leading a modernized,
combat capable, globally
deployable fleet, that will be ready
aye ready to sail either independently
or alongside the fleets of likeminded
nations whenever and
wherever Canadian security interests
are at risk.”
This service and sacrifice by the
Canadian Navy was exemplified
poignantly when RAdm Maddison
referred to the death of PO2 Craig
Blake, killed May 3 by an improvised
explosive device while he
and his team were walking back to
camp after disarming another IED
southwest of Kandahar City.
PO2 Blake,anavy clearance diver
from FDU(A), was in Afghanistan
as an explosive ordnance disposal
operator.
“Wegrieve the sacrifice of a fall-
VAdm Harry DeWolf served as
Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS)
from 1956 to 1960.
of successful night actions against
German ships in the English Channel
and Bay of Biscay. Inlate April,
Haida, in company with Athabaskan,
encountered enemy ships.
When Athabaskan was sunk by torpedoes,
DeWolf continued the
fight and manoeuvred his ship to
rescue 44 of Athabaskan’s crew
while under threat of attack.
Haida’s success in 1943-44 was
due inlarge part to DeWolf’s skill
and professionalism. Know as
Hard over Harry for his aggressive
ship-handling, DeWolf was admired
by his crew who respected
his cool leadership under fire and
his ability to fight his ship.
Between 1945-1950, DeWolf’s
appointments included CO of Warrior
and Senior Officer Afloat (Atlantic),
CO of Magnificent and Flag
Officer Pacific Coast. In 1950 he
was appointed Vice Chief of the
Naval Staff, followedby Chairman
of Canadian Joint Staff in Washington,
and CNS in 1956.
DeWolf’s time as CNS was
marked by rapid technological
changeinnaval warfare, fleet modernization
(including new destroyers)
and increases in personnel.
In his retirement message, he
said in part: “Today, I stand down
knowing the Navy is in good
hands...”
In 1992, Admiral DeWolf attended
the dedication of DeWolf
Park overlooking Bedford Basin
and near his childhood home. He
died in Ottawa in December 2000.
PO2 Craig Blake,age 37,aclearance
diver with the Fleet Diving
Unit (Atlantic) (FDU(A)), died after
animprovised explosive device
(IED) detonated during a dismounted
operation on May 3,about
25 kilometers southwest of Kandahar
City, in the Panjwayi District.
The incident occurred at approximately
4:40 pm Kandahar time as
PO2 Blake and his team were walking
back to camp after having dismantled
an IED near the village of
Pay-e-Moluk.
PO2 Blake was serving with
Task Force 1-10 and had been in
Afghanistan for just a few weeks.
According to PO1 Paul (Knobby)
Walsh, PO2 Blake’s comrades and
friends in the diving unit will remember
him as adedicated sailor
and acolleague whose skills as a
diver and as a leader were beyond
doubt.
“His strong sense of duty was
what took him to Afghanistan,”
said PO1 Walsh, who also has deployed
to Afghanistan to dismantle
IEDs. “His country asked him to
go. He was leader of a team, and he
had a sense of duty to that team.”
A native of Simcoe, Ont, PO2
Blake joined the Navy in his late
teens and had been in the FDU(A))
since 2000. He and his wife Priscilla
had two sons, seven year old Ty
and 14 year old Cain.
“Craig worked in all aspects of
the diving branch,” said PO1
Walsh, adding that PO2 Blake
started out in underwater engineering
andbattle damage repair before
moving into training, “which is
where I first got to know Craig
well...He was a great guy. He was
quiet but his actions spoke louder
than his words.”
The two men worked together
training Navy divers,combat Army
divers and Special Forces divers.
“Craig was directly responsible for
the physical training and he took
great pride in that.”
Within the diving unit, “Craig
was a total professional. When we
were on the side, Craig was the guy
who would sit in the boat for hours
and hours, dressed in all the heavy
equipment as the leading seaman
standby diver. For that instant reaction
to an emergency when something
could go terribly wrong, you
could simply tap Craig on the
shoulder and he would respond.
His job was priority one and it was
to make sure other people were
safe.”
PO2 Blake was well known for
his dedication to physical fitness.
PO1 Walsh said PO2 Blake was an
enthusiasticcyclist who wouldbike
to work inany weather. He greatly
admired Lance Armstrong, seventime
winner of the Tour de France
and PO1 Walsh observed “When
the Tour de France was happening,
Craig was always checking the results
whenever he hadabreak. He
loved watching that race.”
In September 2008, then MS
Blake participated in the Navy Fitness
Challenge as the cyclist member
of a triathlon team competing in
the open category. His team, named
Waterwings, won that category.
PO1 Walsh speculated that PO2
Blake had certain characteristics in
common with Armstrong, noting
“He was really committed to what
he thought was right and he never
quit….He was tough and he was
determined to see things through.”
PO2 Blake was also a hockey
fan. During the diving unit’s twice
weekly hockey games, “Craig never
really wore out the blades of his
skates, he wore out the ankles. He
loved the sport.” PO2 Blake was a
loyal supporter of the Maple Leafs
and PO1 Walsh said that PO2
Blake named his younger son Ty after
Leafs player Tie Domi. While
PO2 Blake was quiet anddignified,
he respected Domi “becausehe was
the guy who stuck up for his
friends, like Craig would do.”
When PO2 Blake’s elder son
Cain began to play hockey on a
team in the Shearwater-Shannon
Minor Hockey Association
(SSMHA), PO2 Blake became a
popular and respected volunteer
coach for peewee hockey. “He
coached so he couldbeinvolved in
the sport with his boys,” said PO1
Walsh. “He wanted to give something
back. He always gave to people.”
In December 2008, SSMHA
presented PO2 Blake with the peewee
coach of the year award. “I
know how much that award meant
to him,” said PO1 Walsh.
As FDU(A)) rallied to support
the Blake family, PO1 Walsh stated
“Craig was a kind man and agood
man. Wein this unit will never forget
him and I hope we do justice to
his memory and to his family.”
The repatriation ceremony for
PO2 Blake took place on Thursday
than 30 members of FDU(A) were
a private member’s motion
in the House of Commons to
reinstate the Navy Executive Curl.
“This motion received unanimous
support from the House,”
noted MacKay.
The Executive Curl is a ring
above a naval officer’s gold lace or
braid insignia. Its origins are believed
to be in the Crimean War,
when it was called Elliott’s Eye in
tribute to the heroic actions of a
Capt Elliott.
Most navies that use the executive
curl are monarchies. The navies
of republics may use another
national symbol or device above
the top layer ofgold lace: for example,
the US uses a star.
Executive officers were the first
to wear the curl but in 1915 engineer
officers began to use it and in
1918 other officer branches followed.
In the Royal Navy all officers
are eligible to use the executive
curl but some navies permit
only deck officers to use it.
The Executive Curl was part of a
Canadian Naval officer’s uniform
from 1910 until the unification of
Canada’s military in 1968.
The second change regarding
Navy uniforms concerned the introduction
of a Sea Service Insignia
to recognize maritime service.
“The Sea Service Insignia is
Canada’s way of saying thank you
to all members of the Canadian
Forces who have spent at least 365
days at sea, “ MacKay said. He emphasized
that all CF personnel are
potentially eligible for this insignia.
As an integrated military, the
Navy, Army and Air Force work together
to accomplish missions.
For Level 1 of the Sea Service Insignia,
personnel must have 365
sea days; for Level 2, 1095 sea
days; for Level 3, 1460 seadays and
for Level 4, 1825 sea days.
“It is a way to acknowledge the
importance of naval operations,”
whether on a sovereignty patrol or
A traditional toast for the Navy anniversary
By Virginia Beaton
Trident staff
BBQ in the drill shed for CFB
AHalifax personnel was among
the festivities marking the Navy’s
100th anniversary on May 4.
As part of that event, and with a
little help from Captain Morgan,
CPO2 Gerry Doucet,a senior steward
and Formation Single Quarters
Manager, organized a traditional
Up Spirits for the ship’s company,
which in this case numbered approximately
2500 military and civilian
personnel.
Wearing a pre-1968 Navy uniform,
CPO2 Doucet was joined by
OS Marc Slater and OS David Lapointe,
who were dressed in square
rigging andacting as Boot-Tops,as
well as MS MacDougall as bos’n’s
mate CPO1 Cleal and Cdr Lin Paddock,
Formation Administration
Officer, as the commissioned officer
witnessing the rum issue.
A day in advance of the BBQ,
CPO2 Doucet organizeda rehearsal
of the routine in the drill shed.
“As a senior steward, I believe
that traditions are abig part of what
we do as an occupation,” he said.
To recreate the traditional Up Spirits,
CPO2 Doucet said he did extensive
research andconsulted experts
with HMCS Sackville, the museum,
the CNC committee and with
the Base Chief’s office “in hopes to
keep it as historically accurate as
possible.”
Heexplained that the custom of a
daily rumissue at seadated back to
the 18th century Royal Navy, and
the Royal Canadian Navy in 1910
continued the custom until March
30, 1972, when the last official tot
of rum was issued.
CPO2 Gerry Doucet, second from right, organized a traditional Up
Spirits.
CONTRIBUTED
During Up Spirits, CPO2 Doucet,
as purser, would request the
bos’n’s mate to ring six bells and
pipe the Up Spirits. The purser and
the two Boot-Tops would then escort
the rum breaker and rum tub to
the location where the rum would
be distributed, and the Boot-Tops
would act as sentries.
For the Up Spirits in the drill
shed, CPO2 Doucet offered each
member of the ship’s company the
choice of taking the rumneat, or as
grog. CPO2 Doucet also arrangeda
traditional Up Spirits ceremony for
guests attending the MARLANT
Battle of the Atlantic dinner at the
Wardroom on April 29.
Ceremony symbolizes
Navy history, missions
Norman thanked the navy veterans
who were present for the ceremony,
in particular “for their sense of
duty, honour and dedication.”
By Virginia Beaton
aters collected in 2009 by
WCanadian Navy ships serving
in the North Atlantic Ocean,
Pacific Ocean, Arctic Ocean, Gulf
of St Lawrence, Great Lakes and
the Indian Ocean were brought together
during aceremony in HMCS
Sackville on April 30.
The waters symbolize the Navy’s
history and missions, “the
worldwide reach and the worldwide
role,” according to master of
ceremonies and NAVRES 2010
project manager Cdr Max Harvey.
They remind Canadians that
Canada is a maritime nation and
that our national prosperity and security
depend upon the oceans,
where the Navy plays a key role in
defending our vitalinterests whether
that is through sovereignty patrols
along our coastlines, in meeting
our obligations to NATO allies,
or whether it is in diplomatic assignments
around the globe.
The waters, in separately labelled
cylinders and collected in a
wooden case, were to be transported
Navy welcomes sailors for the next century
By Blake Patterson
Special to the Trident
C
anadian Naval Centennial celebrations
were highlighted
May 4 by aceremony that welcomed
18 new sailors to the Canadian
Navy.
The ceremony took place on the
quarterdeck of HMCS Toronto,
alongside the Maritime Museum of
the Atlantic. RAdm Paul Maddison,
Commander JTFA and MAR-
LANT was the attestation officer
for the ceremony.
RAdm Maddison said the enrolment
was part of an extraordinary
day for the Canadian Navy – aday
that not only marked the 100th anniversary
of the royal assent of the
Naval Service Act on May 4, 1910,
but also the return of Fredericton
and the granting of the Freedom of
the City to MARLANTby the Halifax
Regional Municipality.
RAdm Maddison considered the
enrolment of the new sailors just as
significant.
“We’reherefor anequally if not
more important event,” he said.
“Looking forward to our second
hundred years of service, we welcome
our newest sailors into the navy.”
Ranging in age from 18 to 53, the
new sailors reflect the wide range
of Reserve and Regular Force
recruits attracted by today’s CF.
Some are starting their careers eager
for travel and opportunities,
some are serving to help pay for
university, and others to complete
their careers and add greater meaning
to their working lives.
“I wanted to get back in the
workforce, and I really felt that I
really wanted to serve my country,
and to have that as my last working
days,” said Jacinthe Bennett, 53, a
former cartographer who took time
off to raise her family. “I couldn’t
be more proud. I’m very proud to
be a Canadian.”
Bennett said her family supports
her decision to join the military,
particularly her son who is a first
year cadet at the Royal Military
College inKingston. Her decision
to join was inspired by watching
her son complete the recruit obstacle
course at RMC.
“I went to see his obstacle course
last fall, and I felt very patriotic,”
she said.
Bennett will be a Naval Communicator
in the Naval Reserve and
will commence her basic military
training this June at CFB Borden.
She will then join HMCS Scotian.
RAdm Maddison told the
recruits they will be expected to
build on the Canadian Navy’s first
100 years of proud tradition and
service. He said the Canadian Navy,
from humble beginnings, has
protected Canada’s coasts and maritime
interests through WorldWars
and conflicts around the world. A
role he expects will continuein the
navy’s next century. Whether it’s
fighting piracy and terrorism on the
open seas or responding to people
in need – as was the case inHaiti
following the recent earthquake –
he said the Canadian Navy will
continue to play a vital role.
“As welook to this next century,
I believe it’s acentury that will
come to be known as a maritime
century,” he said.
He said many international tensions
are building, specifically noting
the potential impact of climate
change, the migration of fish
stocks, resources in the Arctic, and
disasters such as the recent oil spill
in the Gulf of Mexico.
“Much of this activity will come
from or find its focus at sea,” he
said. “Your Canadian Navy will be
increasingly required to sail in Canadian
national interests.”
The message was clear as the 18
new sailors swore to “be faithful
and bear true allegiance to Her
Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Second,
Queen of Canada, her heirs
and successors according to law.”
“Working hard, working as a
team, that’s what it’s all about,”
said Jeremy Curtis, 18, who enrolled
as Naval Communicator. “I
think I’mgoing to really enjoy it. I
think it’s whereit’s at and I encourage
other people to do it.”
John Watton, 37, of New Glasgow,
left the military while his two
children were young. This fall, now
that his children are older, he decided
to re-enroll. Andbecausehenow
has a Marine Engineering Technology
Diploma from Memorial University,
he receiveda$20,000 signing
bonus.
“At that time it was the right
choice, I don’t regret it, but I
missed it every day,” said Watton,
Navy presents Centennial Bell to Canada
A symbol of
freedom, democracy
and respect for
human rights
By Darlene Blakeley
Maple Leaf
n the hallowed hall of the Senate
Iof Canada, 100 years to the day it
was created there May 4, 1910, the
Navy presented a ship’s bell to the
people of Canada, rededicating itself
to another century of service.
“The Centennial Bell stands as a
symbol that honours the past,celebrates
the Royal Canadian Navy’s
achievements and recognizes the
Navy’s safeguarding of Canadian
values of freedom, democracy, respect
for human rights and the rule
of law,” said Minister of National
Defence Peter MacKay.
During the ceremony, Prime
Minister Stephen Harper announced
that the Government of
Canada is designating May 4, 2010,
as Canadian Navy Centennial Day
to mark the Navy’s 100th anniversary
of service.
“In one relatively brief century,
our sailors have established a
mighty tradition of service and heroism,
one that is second to none in
the worldamong navies that are often
far older, and in some cases, far
larger,” said Prime Minister Harper.
“And Canadians have come to
understand that our way of life, our
trade, our security, our capacity to
influence events elsewhere depends
in significant part upon the
men and women of the Canadian
Navy and the ships in which they
sail. It has for 100 years, and in the
future that is mine to see, I expect it
will continue to be so.”
The Centennial Bell, presented
by Chief of the Maritime Staff
VAdm Dean McFadden, was christened
with the waters of Canada’s
three oceans – Atlantic, Pacificand
Arctic – as well as the Gulf of St.
Lawrence, the Great Lakes,and the
Indian Ocean, representing the Navy’s
international theatre of operations.
These waters were collected
throughout 2009 by naval ships and
submarines. The bell, withits original
rope made by CPO2 David
Lowther, and abook highlighting
the history of the bell and displaying
the variety of artefacts from
whichit was made, are to bekept as
a permanent reminder that Canada
is a maritime nation dependent upon
the oceans for its national prosperity.
“For many mariners, the ship’s
bell came to symbolize life at sea
itself,” said VAdm McFadden.
“That is why even to this day, the
bell is a warship’s most important
artefact, and why it continues to
play animportant role in naval routine
and ceremony, even in a technically
sophisticated force where
operations are coordinated to the
second.”
In a tragic turn ofevents,attendees
at the ceremony also mourned
the loss of PO2 Craig Blake, the
first Canadian sailor to die in Afghanistan.
A member of FDU(A),
PO2 Blake was killed May 3 after
an improvised explosive device
detonatedduring adismounted operation,
about 25 km southwest of
Kandahar City in the Panjwayi District.
Realtor thanks military
community with cash back
ince January 17, 2008, realtor®
SKeith Tannahill has given
back over $100,000 to the many
military families who have used his
professional real estate services.
“It’s my way of saying thank
you, from my wife Linda and me
to all the CF members who put
themselves in harm’s way.”
During his 26 years in real estate,
Keith has acquired an in-depth
knowledge of the market in Halifax
Regional Municipality. Two years
ago, Keith received approval to
start his program of cash back
to CF members who used his
professional services in buying and
selling houses.
“With the cooperation of a lot of
good people in the Department of
National Defence, it got underway
and now, I can see the returns. It’s
enjoyable to see so many people
benefitting from this program.”
If you are posted to or from
Halifax, or even if you are moving
to a new home within this area,
Keith Tannahill can put extra cash
in your pocket. If you purchase your
home through Keith, he will give
you his cash to buyer incentive.
This applies to all MLS® listings in
the Halifax and surrounding areas.
Keith Tannahill is an experienced
full-time real estate agent offering
qualified professional service
with all his listings on the MLS®
system.
He offers you all the benefits
of MLS® with advertising and
promotion plus the added incentive
of his cash back offer.
Should you list your home with
Keith and he writes an acceptable
offer from a qualified buyer, he will
give you, the seller, on closing, up
to two per cent of the selling price.
For example, if Keith helps
you sell your home for $200,000
you will receive up to $2,000 and
$4,000 cash back. If he helps you
purchase your home for $200,000,
you’ll receive up to $1,000 cash
back.
“The CF members and their
families have given me the privilege
and the trust of assisting them with
the sale or the purchase of a home,”
says Keith. “I want to fulfill my
responsibilities to the family I’m
working for, as people in the CF
are very busy with their careers and
with so many other tasks.”
He receives email queries from
CF members deployed in the
Persian Gulf and in Afghanistan.
“These are people who are
thinking of moving to a new house
or are being posted when they
return, and they want to meet with
me to talk about it.”
Over the past 26 years, Keith
and his executive assistant (wife)
Linda have worked with numerous
military families posted in and out
of the Halifax area. During that
time, they have seen how useful it
is to have extra cash in hand during
a move. Keith says he knows extra
money is always helpful, even
though the military covers many of
the posting expenses.
“I’ve seen the results of my
program,” he says. “It’s great
when the families get a couple of
thousand dollars they wouldn’t
have, otherwise. Then they can get
some of the extra things they would
like to have, over and above just the
things that they need.”
Several years ago, Keith tried
retirement but he found that he
didn’t like it. He lasted three months
and since going back to work, he
has never been so busy in his real
estate career working with and for
military families, and enjoying it to
the nth degree.
“I encourage families to see every
property they wish to see, as this
allows them to make an informed
decision. It means additional
running around but the result is that
everybody feels wonderful about
what they’ve accomplished.” Linda
and Keith do not take a vacation
until after Labour Day and even
then, he has his cell phone and
laptop and is available 24⁄7.
As the year 2010 progresses and
now that annual posting season
has arrived, Keith and Linda look
forward to greeting and assisting
Canadian military families, either
selling and moving to a new
location, or on their house hunting
By Lt C.M. Bennet
Base Public Affairs
The Community Leadership
Advisory Council (CLAC)
announced the launch ofits
Glorious and Free campaign
at Halifax City Hall on April
27. The campaign is designed
to promote awareness
of naval contributions here
in Halifax and to highlight
the numerous activities that
will be taking place during
the Canadian Naval Centennial
this summer.
Most military members
live a transient lifestyle but
the Navy has thrown some
anchors and established a
presence, protecting Halifax
and its harbours for more
than 250 years.
The campaign is a volunteer,
community based initiative
overseen by members
of CLAC and supported by
the Halifax Port Authority,
lives due to a workplace injury.
Several speakers, including
Premier Darrell
Dexter and Labour and
Workforce Development
Minister Marilyn More,
discussed the importance
of workers and employers
working together to eliminate
workplace deaths.
Arlene Audit, a Nova
Scotia woman whose 21-
year-old son Jonathan,died
on the job in Alberta, gave
an emotional speech. She
told the crowd that due to a
lack of safety precautions
taken by her son’s supervisor,
her son was suffocated
from gas fumes. Audit is
now an advocate who
speaks to organizations to
educate regarding the importance
of workplace
safety.
Following the speeches,
representatives from various
organizations, along
with workers and politicians
laid wreaths at the
Saint Mary’s University,
Bell Aliant, and Halifax Regional
Municipality (HRM)
to thank sailors for keeping
us glorious and free with
many years of service to the
residents of Halifax.
RAdm Paul Maddison
thanked the CLAC for “coming
together and combining
elements to facilitate the
building of bridges between
the Navy and community.”
The Admiral said he is looking
forward to the many upcoming
events but especially
the International Fleet Review
because “it will capture
the interest of Canadians
from coast to coast and put
the spotlight onto their Navy
and the sailors and what they
have accomplished over the
last 100 years.”
The CLAC was established
in 2007 to advise and
provide recommendations to
workers’ memorial adjacent
to Province House.
The wreath laying ceremony
takes place each year to
honour those who lost their
lives in workplace accidents.
The Base Commander
laida wreath on behalf of
MARLANT.
The Department of National
Defence and the CF
implement many measures
to maintain a safe work environment;
however, accidents
can still occur at any
time. It is important to be
aware of the tragic events
which have occurred in the
past to try and prevent similar
incidents from happening
in the future.
Through continued
awareness in the workplace,
Canadian employers
and workers can take the
Yes, Shearwater has a new Masters
Swim Team (CFAST) and the
members are constantly in pursuit
of enthusiastic, water-loving, water-seeking
missiles to join their
team. The team currently consists
of swimmers ranging from beginners
all the way up to CISM level
athletes and triathletes.
Brian Beckwith, the CFAST
coach, has been aninvaluable asset
to the team; he is able to coach at
whichever level is necessary for
each person,due to his extensive
background in swimming and
coaching. Brian’s main goal for
CFAST is to coach and guide
swimmers of all levels to improve
existing skill sets, teach new skill
sets, and do whatever is necessary
to give the CFAST team acompetitive
edge.
The team’s long-term goal,
establishedby swim team organizers
MS Sean O’Brien and LS David
Pain, is andalways will be to senda
team to nationals each year and of
course come home with too many
medals to count. As for nationals
this year, which are to be held in
Nanaimo, BC in late May, lack of
funding has already reduced the
number of CF swimmers who will
be attending; however, the hope is
that there will still be a national
championship. In the event that
clawbacks prevent a national
swimming championship from occurring
this year or years to come,a
contingency plan may need to be
developed for an Atlantic Regional
Swimming Championship.
Considering that the CFAST
team is relatively new (September
2009) and still wishing to increase
its numbers, the focus for the team
is currently onits short-termgoals.
staff,and his pleasurein seeing soldiers
demonstrating their individual
skill at arms; acore military skill
for which every member of the CF
is trained.
A guide to healthy gardening
By Health Promotion Staff
sun feels warm on your face,
Tthe sky is blue, and the snow
has melted. As Canadians, we truly
look forward to the spring season.
One common rite of the spring
season is preparing our gardens so
that wemay enjoy their beauty later.
While some researchhas shown
the energy weexpend while gardening
to be too low in intensity to
bring true fitness benefits, there is
very clear evidence of other health
benefits derived from this activity.
Gardening is a great health activity
as it disguises the workinvolved
(it may not feel like work) and there
is a wonderful reward for all of our
efforts. In addition to the satisfaction
of adding beauty to our properties,
gardening can improve our
overall mental health and well being
through the satisfaction of
knowing that we have spent time
exercising in the great outdoors.
Researchhas shown that gardening
for 30 to 45 minutes several
days a week can have significant
health benefits. These benefits include
decreasing a person’s risk of
high blood pressure and diabetes,
as well as contributing to healthier
bones, muscles,and joints. In addition,
gardening activities such as
digging, lifting, trimming shrubs,
and mowing lawns can require the
same energy requirements as walking,
cycling or swimming.
As with other forms of physical
activity, wemust plan our approach
to gardening. If we have been sedentary
during the winter months, it
would be advisable to start abasic
fitness routine before the gardening
season begins. This preparation
will help us to easeinto the activity
and to avoid sore muscles and a
tired back.
When beginning any physical
activity, it is always advisable to
check with your family physician.
For additional assistance, our Fitness
and Sports Centre staff can
also work with us to design a program
to help us prepare our bodies
for the gardening season. Anexcellent
example of such a fitness program
can also be found online at
www.gardenfitness.com.
It is important to approach aday
in the garden in the same manner
we wouldany other physical activity.
To help us prepare, the Canadian
Physiotherapy Association
suggests the following:
A warm up before you start your
gardening workout helps to reduce
muscle strain, injury and fatigue.
Do some shoulder circles, trunk rotation,
and heel/toe standing. You
might even rehearse movements,
like raking, as part of your warmup.
Then take a few minutes to do
the following stretches, and repeat
them again at the end of your gardening
activity. If you begin to feel
abit stiff while gardening, pause
and do more stretches.
When raking or hoeing – keep
your tools close to your body and
your back straight to reduce strain.
Use your arms and avoid twisting
your trunk. Uselong-handled tools
suited to your height.
If you tend to bend over or reach
too far while raking,consider using
an ergonomic rake (available at
garden centres). It will make the
job easier and reduce strain to your
back.
When weeding or planting – do
not bend from the waist. Squat or
kneel on a kneeling pad. If you have
difficulty getting up, use a kneeling
pad / bench with a support handle
for assistance.
Give your back, legs and knees a
break from stooping and kneeling
by using tools withlong handles to
help with the weeding;
Squat or sit on the ground to
trowel, rather than bending over.
When digging or shovelling – insert
the head of the shovel vertically
into the ground and step on the
blade. Lift small amounts at a time.
Keep your back straight andbendat
the knees. Avoid twisting. Use a
wheelbarrow to move big or heavy
loads.
Choose a shovel with a weight
and handle length that is appropriatefor
your size and for the job you
are doing;
Give your back abreak by using
a smaller shovel, reducing the
temptation to lift large amounts of
soil;
Spread heavy lifting anddigging
tasks over a week rather than a
weekend, and spread major projects
throughout the seasons. Take
time to recover between them.
When lifting or carrying–know
your limits and lift properly: bend
your knees, not your back. Keep the
load close to your body. Don’t lift
items that are too heavy for you to
handle–get help. Use a wagon or
wheelbarrow to transport supplies
and / or to move or carry heavy
items.
A four-wheeled cart is sturdier
and easier to use than a wheelbarrow;
Lift with your knees slightly bent
Canadian rock icons.
“Weended up having a lot of
hits as a trio,” said Rich Dodson,
guitar player for the Stampeders,
concerning previous members
of the band. “We’re back as
the original three-piece band,
Stampeders split up in 1977,but
reunited in 1992 to begin touring
and recording again.
“We started off as a country
rock group, but then graduated
to more of a rock thing. Sometimes
we get additional players
and try to expand and try other
things, but we still like performing
as a trio. And it feels
fun, too.” Dodson said that the
band—other members including
Kim Berly, and Ronnie
King—has a lot of friends and
stage technicians in Halifax and
continued: “We love Halifax.
Some of our best fans and members
live there. I love the city
and we always bring the good
weather with us.”
Canadian actor to portray Aboriginal war hero
By Penny Rogers
Lookout Newspaper
owichan Tribes recently helda
Ctraditional Coast Salish naming
ceremony in Duncan to welcome
well-known Canadian actor
Adam Beach, his daughter Phoenix
and Vancouver Island’s Bay Film
Studios co-founder Robin Webb
into their community.
Standing onintricately designed
blankets placed on the soft dirt
floor of the Somena Long House,
surrounded by acrowd of almost
2,500 people, Beach was honoured
with the name Stayki-tun (Wolf always
looking for a home), his
daughter Phoenix with the name
Stayki-ough (daughter of Wolf)
and Robin Webb with Spaal’tun
(Raven that gathers).
It was part of acelebration to recognize
the upcoming work of
Beach and Webb, who have joined
forces to produce a motion picture
based on the extraordinary wartime
heroism of Sgt Tommy Prince.
Joe Thorne, Cowichan band
member and Duncan city councillor,
was instrumentalin organizing
the ceremony and has been working
with the film’s producers,
whose studio is located minutes
outside Duncan.
“We wanted people, especially
nativekids, to realize wehave a lot
of Indian heroes. They talk about
Jim Thorpe, God bless him. Ira
Hayes. A lot of other guys, but nobody
knows about the Tommy
Princes,” said Thorne. “Adam is
the right age to relate to the young
and the old. He’s a perfect role
model. No mom, no dad and he
made it and now he wants to open
his heart to this community and
work with Aboriginalkids on Vancouver
Island.”
Also excitedabout the upcoming
film are members of Princess Patricia’s
Canadian Light Infantry
(PPCLI) in Edmonton. Sgt Michael
Rude drove over 12 hours to attend
the naming ceremony after being
invited by Victoria’s Aldeen Mason,
the national civilian co-chair
for the National Defence Aboriginal
Advisory Group (DAAG). Sgt
Rude is the regional military cochair
for Alberta.
“A film like this can really be
something if it’s on par with what’s
been done, like ‘Windtalkers.’ That
was about Navaho code talkers, or
‘Flags of Our Fathers.’ Those are
bigger budget movies. Even if it’s
half the budget or if it can make
some of the points those other films
did, it stands to be up there. For army
guys, we like that kind of stuff,”
said Sgt Rude, with achuckle. “It’s
about us and the military and the
Special Service Force,andTommy
Prince. There are so many pluses,
in my opinion.”
Working out of the Regimental
Headquarters for PPCLI in Edmonton,
Sgt Rude found himself helping
with the film in a unique way.
Word spread and questions started
coming in from veterans who wanted
to help with the film, including a
few who had served with Prince.
Sgt Rude started filtering these invaluable
contacts back to the film’s
producers who have sincemet with
several of the men.
Aldeen Mason, being First Nations
from Manitoba, was no
stranger to the name Tommy
Prince. “I know how very special
Sgt Prince was. But because of his
ethnicity I am ashamed to say he
was not properly acknowledgedas
a true Canadian veteran when he returned
from war. I haveheard similar
stories frommy Aboriginal veteranfriends.
Once they returned to
Canada, they were treatedas lowerclass
citizens. Our Métis veterans
are still fighting for recognition and
compensation today,” said Mason.
Beach,also from Manitoba, was
excited when initially contactedby
Webb about the Prince story. “I
thought,damn, someone who cares
about a story that’s going to show
First Nation kids a hero and a role
model,” said Beach. “It’s awesome,
man. It’s something I’ve always
been part of in spirit, and to
honour him like I’vehonoured Ira
Hayes and the Navajo code talkers,
it’s an opportunity to extend it out
to one of my people from Manitoba.
So, I think that’s very important.”
Prince is buried in Winnipeg’s
Field of Honour section of Brookside
Cemetery. The simple white
stone monument blends in with the
thousands of others that stand row
upon row. It is adorned with a simple
cross, his name, rank,battalion,
the datehe diedand his age, 62. But
what makes Prince’s headstone extraordinary
are the four letters also
engraved on it: MM and SS.
It’s a long way from Manitoba’s
Actor Adam Beach speaks with representatives from the CF Defence Aboriginal Advisory Group. Members of the Cowichan Tribe honoured
Beach at a naming ceremony in Duncan on April 15. He and his daughter, Phoenix, were given the name Wolf.
the SecondWorldWar that’s where
Prince was summoned. Standing in
TRIDENT, MAY 17, 2010 17
CNC celebrations kick off in Newfoundland
By Lt(N) Shannon Lewis-Simpson
Training Officer HMCS Cabot
MCS Cabot sailors of all ages,
Hranks, and seniority laced up
their sneakers for a good cause on
April 17, running 100 km around
Quidi Vidi Lake to celebrate 100
years of proud naval service. In the
process they raised more than $650
in one hour for the Children’s Wish
Foundation of Canada.
Cabot’s ship’s bell was used to
begin the regular St John’s City
Council Meeting on Tuesday April
20 at one bell in the First Dog
Watch. Whether or not His Worship
and the City Councillors needed
it, they received abit of dog
watch instruction on naval history
and the importance of the Navy to
St John’s and Newfoundland and
Labrador. Cdr Rob Clark, Commanding
Officer, HMCS St John’s
presented ahistory of St John’s to
Mayor Dennis O’Keefe. Similar
namesake presentations are being
made nationally to draw attention
to the Canadian Naval Centennial
and highlight the Navy’s connections
with communities throughout
the country.
On Saturday April 24, nearly
1000 people packed the Arts and
Culture Centre in St John’s to hear
the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra’s
musical tribute to the Navy,
including a newly commissioned
piece by Clifford Crawley
entitled Heart of Oak, a framed
copy of which was presented to
Thin places,
thin times
Padre’s Corner
By Lt(N) John Hounsell-Drover
12 Wing
One of the aspects of Celtic Christianity
that always spoke to my soul
has been the assertion that there are
times in our lives and places in our
world where God or the holy or the
spiritual (whatever you want to call
it) is more evident. There are moments
of grace, places of unspeakable
peace and beauty, and events
that change us forever when it is impossible
to deny the presence of a
greater power. These are places and
times when the veil between this
world and the world of God becomes
‘thin’.
The ancient Celts often marked
thin places by building wells or
erecting stones. Later Christians in
Britain would build their churches
and monasteries on these sites.
Thin times, events ofgreat renown,
were told and retold in story and
song. As a military family, we
know all to well the value of recounting,
remembering and celebrating
our past.
Visually, these thin places in life
were represented by the intricate
knot-work we commonly associate
with Celtic artwork today. As you
follow the lines of any knot you
will find that not only are they all
intertwined in a wonderful way,
but, the lines themselves disappear
and reappear over and under each
other. This interweaving, in and out
of sight,displays the assurance that
the paths of our lives and not only
intertwined with each other, but
also with the invisible world of
God.
So what’s the point Simply this:
as sure as our lives are closely
woven together, wemust not neglect
to celebrate the times and places
in our lives when wehave drawn
close to the holy, to God.
I have heard people tell me over
and over that they arenot religious.
Baloney. These same people will
also speak to me ofmoments in
their lives, relationships that they
cherish and ideals which they hold
dear in such a way that I too am
drawn into their thin places.
Why do we often try to play
down the spiritual aspect of our
lives Are we afraid Ashamed
Here is the challenge I lay down
to all who read these words. Take
time today and in the days to come
to name your thin places and moments.
Write them down if you
have to. Share them with others if
you can. But, for God’s sake, celebrate
and remember them.
RAdm Maddison on behalf of the
Navy. The program included a
wide range of music from Felix
Mendelssohn to Stan Rogers, punctuated
by the shrill sounds of the
bos’n call. The concert was organized
like aday alongside, beginning
with Wakey Wakey and ending
with sunset carried out by members
of Cabot and CFNES Detatchment
St John’s. Free tickets to the
concert weremade available to veterans
and their guests, which was
very much appreciated.
In his address to the audience,
RAdm Maddison quoted Capt ’D’,
Rollo Mainguy, who famously said
“Although the head of the Navy
might beinHalifax, the heart of the
Navy is in St John’s.”
Clearly nothing has changed in
60 years.
HRH The Princess Royal speaks with students of the Marine Institute and naval and merchant navy veterans
number of patient parking spots in
front of both the Stad Clinicand the
The Compensation Web Application
(CWA) is a new tool available
to DND employees to access
information about their pay and
benefits online. All employees
with a MCAN user account can
utilize this tool and it can be accessed
through the DND Intranet
site @ http://halifax.mil.ca.
Pay
The CWA provides employees
with the ability to view their pay
stubs and T4s electronically. You
can even choose to only receive
your pay stub electronically,
thereby reducing paper. Employees
can use the tool to calculate
gross to net pay estimates for
regular pay changes such as acting,
promotion, revisions and
statutory increments. You can also
commence/ amend/stop voluntary
deductions such as Canada Savings
Bonds and additional income
tax. The application does not
allow employees to make modifications
Pension
Employees no longer have to
wait for their pension and benefits
statement to arrive; it is always
accessible to view through the
CWA. There is also the option to
via the Service Buyback
Estimator and to calculate pension
estimates. Please note however,
that these are just estimates. It is
important to make an appointment
to meet with your Compensation
estimates. If you use the calculators
listed under Basic Tools, you
will be prompted to provide more
information as these are simply
generating hypothetical information.
To set up an account in CWA,
you will require the following
information:
“I come from a Navy family
background so I can tell you that
I’m very excited about playing at
said Bruce Nelson, guitarist for
playing the Jesus Jones’ song Right
band’s name. “Some of the audience
members actually thought it
meant the food—blueberry grunt!”
Labelledas a pop-rock band with a
celtic twist, Blueberry Grunt, according
to Nelson, is very excited
to play for the IFR.
Jonathan Goud, bass player for
Telfer, said of the IFR: “It’s a great
cause for celebration. We hope to
throw a party for people and show
them a good time.” Telfer is relatively
new to the Halifax music
scene. Playing every Thursday at
the Carleton on Argyle St., and
having recorded their debut album
at the Sonic Temple last year, the
high energy, punk rock band has recently
established themselves as a
popular musical group in Halifax.
In a more solemn tone, Goud recognized
that while the concert is sure
to be fun, “for any military event,
it’s good to remember the people
you work with and the people who
are away.”
A partnered operation in Helmand
By Cpl Neil Dancer
JTF-Afg/OMLT
he soldiers of Kandak 1 were
Tdusty but battle-ready when
they arrived with their Canadian
mentors at Camp Dwyer in Helmand
Province. Kandak 1 belongs
to the 1st Brigade, 205 Corps Afghan
National Army (1/205 ANA),
so they were more than 200 km
from their normal area of operations
in Zhari District, Kandahar
Province.
Kandak 1 was part of OPER-
ATION MOSHTARAK (“together”
in Dari), alarge-scale clearing
operation designed to secure aTaliban
stronghold in Marjah.
The primary job of operational
mentors is to train Afghan soldiers
in full-spectrum operations andassist
them in bringing security and
stability to their country. In the
days leading up to Op MOSHTA-
RAK, the mentors deployed with
Kandak 1 concentrated on basic
soldier skills, including weapons
handling andcompany formations,
and realistic training in counter-
IED techniques using live explosives
and realisticcasualty evacuation
scenarios.
As the scheme ofmanoeuvre became
more defined, Kandak 1 was
tasked to secure the area immediately
west of the Trik Zabor Canal
road, partnered with two U.S.
Stryker units.
Kandak 1 was in ablocking position
between Task Force Helmand,
led by the British Army, and Task
Force Leatherneck, led by the US
Marine Corps. Within the first few
days of the operation, Kandak 1 secured
six complex village objectives,
each offering its own set of
challenges. The Afghan soldiers
then remained in placefor the next
month to secure all six villages, living
in small compounds with their
Canadian mentors. They interacted
very well with the residents ofeach
village,and quickly built a friendly
rapport with elders.
The first week of Op MOSHTA-
RAK was kinetic, with insurgent
forces delivering medium to heavy
resistance. Once the push was under
way, however, the insurgents
dissipated in the face of superior
firepower, and Kandak 1 pushed
south to its last objectives. During
this phase of the operation, one of
the Afghan soldiers receivedagunshot
wound in combat; he later died
ofhis wounds, and his loss was felt
by his ANA brothers and Canadians
alike. The accurate insurgent fire
also wounded several American
soldiers.
After pushing hard for a week,
the forces deployed on OP MOSH-
TARAK had to hold the ground
they had taken. Strong points were
established,adefensive routine began,
and the Afghan forces really
started to shine in the critical task of
maintaining the security of all
routes in the area of operations. No
vehicle was lost on any route cleared
by the ANA. Kandak 1 found
half adozen IEDs but struck none,
perhaps the best record of the dozens
of units involved in OP MOSH-
TARAK.
In early March, when the Marines
relieved the ANA, Kandak 1
began the long journey back to
Kandahar Airfield, arriving on
March 8 without incident. First,
however, acelebration was held at
Camp Leatherneck with a special
meal preparedby the ANA and presentation
of certificates and
awards. The Marine, Stryker and
ANA chains of command all
acknowledged that Kandak 1 didan
outstanding job, truly embracing
the concept of partnered operations.
Getting married Consider life insurance
By Denise Ray
Insurance Representative, SISIP
Financial Services, Petawawa
ongratulations, you aregetting
Cmarried. You have chosen the
person you want to spend the rest of
your life with and now you are
making plans.
Your marriage will unite you and
your spouse in many important
ways, including your finances. You
are now financially responsible to
your partner. You may have debts
or you may be planning to buy a
home or start a family. Whatever
your plans, you have probably
spent some time budgeting for the
future as you start your new life together.
But, what is the one thing that
your financial plan depends on Income.
Without income, your plans,
your dreams and your financial security
may come to acrashing halt.
Consider what would happen
should you or your spouse pass
away prematurely. The income is
no longer there, but the debt and the
needs will be. This responsibility to
your partner must be addressed.
You can do this by making sure you
have acurrent will and proper life
insurance.
Let’s face it — we all know we
are going to die someday. Still, we
don’t like to admit it or plan for it,
so most of us put off arranging our
wills or buying life insurance.
There are many reasons for this,
perhaps we believe we can delay
the inevitable, or like most of us,
you think life insurance is not the
most thrilling topic. It is not, but it
can offer you peace of mind and,
imagine the scenario if you don’t
take care of things.
It is not usually the cost of the insurance
or the cost of drawing up a
will that prevents us from having
them in order …It is simply procrastination
or fear. However, the
importance of a will and proper insurance
cannot be overstated.
Some people think: “I’m young,
I’mhealthy, I don’t need life insurance.”
This however, is precisely
when you shouldbe considering it.
Your premiums will be low because
of your age and you will be
more likely to be approvedbecause
you areingood health. Infact, it is
not just money that buys life insurance;
it is your good health. Are
you going to be ingood health in
the future
The purpose of life insurance is
to protect the quality of life of your
survivors. Life insurance is for
them, not you. It is meant to ensure
that there will be sufficient financial
resources available to meet the
needs of your family.
Speak to a SISIP Financial Services
life insurance professional today.
They can assist you in determining
your needs and ensuring
your family’s future is protected.
Vous vous mariez Songez à l’assurance vie
élicitations, vous vous ma-
Vous avez choisi la per-
Friez.
le reste de votre vie, et vous faites
maintenant des plans.
Votre mariage unira votre conjoint
et vous de bien des façons
importantes, y compris sur le plan
de vos finances. Vous êtes maintenant
responsable financièrement
envers votre conjoint. Vous
avez peut-être des dettes ou envisagez
acheter une maison ou fonder
une famille. Quels que soient
vos plans, vous avez sans doute
consacré du temps àdresser un
budget pour l’avenir et votrenouvelle
vie ensemble.
Par contre, quel est l’élément
unique sur lequel repose votre
plan financier Le revenu. Sans
revenu, vos plans, vos rêves et
votre sécurité financière pourraient
s’effondrer complètement.
Songez à ce qui arriverait si
votre conjoint ou vous mouriez
prématurément. Il n’y aurait plus
de revenu, mais les dettes et les
besoins ne disparaissent pas.
O’Regan’s on Robie
assurance vie. Cela s’explique de
plusieurs façons: peut-être que
vous croyez pouvoir retarder l’inévitable
ou comme la majorité
des gens, vous pensez quel’assurance
vie n’est pas le sujet le plus
passionnant. Et vous avez parfaitement
raison. En revanche,
ces démarches vous offrent la
tranquillité d’esprit et ,après tout,
imaginez le scénario si vous ne
vous préparez pas en conséquence.
Ce n’est généralement pas le
coût del’assurance ou dela préparation
d’un testament qui nous
empêche de mettre de l’ordre
dans nos affaires, mais simplement
la procrastination ou la
peur. Toutefois, onne saurait trop
insister sur l’importance d’un
testament et d’une couverture
d’assurance adéquate.
Certains se disent : Je suis
jeune, je suis en santé, je n’ai pas
besoin d’assurance vie. C’est
pourtant précisément le moment
d’y songer. Vos primes seraient
basses en raison de votre âge et
vous avez de bien meilleures
chances d’être approuvé,car vous
êtes en santé. Enfait,cen’est pas
seulement l’argent, mais aussi
votre bonne santé qui vous procurent
de l’assurance vie. Serezvous
en bonne santé à l’avenir
L’assurance vie a pour objet de
protéger la qualité de vie de vos
survivants. Cen’est pas pour vous
que vous achetez l’assurance vie,
mais bien pour eux. Elle vous permet
de veiller à ce que les
membres de votre famille aient
suffisamment de ressources financières
à leur disposition pour
combler leurs besoins.
Communiquez dès aujourd’hui
1 Canadian
Air Division
recognized for
OPERATION
HESTIA effort
Presented with
first ever
CEFCOM unit
commendation
By 1 Canadian Air Division
hile visiting 1 Canadian Air
WDivision on April 28, the
commander of the Canadian Expeditionary
Forces Command (CEF-
COM), LGen Marc Lessard presented
the first ever CEFCOM unit
commendation to the Division for
their work during OPERATION
HESTIA.
“What was done here at 1 Canadian
Air Division – providing the
airlift, reacting to change – was incredible,”
said LGen Lessard. “The
reason we had so much success in
Haiti was the Air Force, andall that
beganhere at 1 Canadian Air Division.”
In response, MGen Yvan Blondin,commander
of 1 Canadian Air
Division, laid much of the credit on
the evolution of the Combined
Aerospace Operations Centre,
made possible by the cumulative
efforts of Division staff over time
and under the leadership of successive
Division commanders, LGen
Charles Bouchard and LGen Marcel
Duval.
“We are proud to support CEF-
COM, Canada Command, and NO-
RAD in our operations, whether we
are taking the mission to Haiti, Afghanistan,
the far North, and anywhereelseinCanada
or around the
world,” said MGen Blondin.
The citation of the Unit Commendation
reads:
“From January to April 2010, 1
Canadian Air Division achieved
critical results during disaster relief
operations in response to the devastating
earthquake in Haiti. The division’s
ability to quickly deploy
its resources amidst an uncertain
operational environment ensured
Canadian personnel integrated
seamlessly into the multinational
contingent and had an immediate
impact on the ground. While concurrently
managing operations associated
with the Olympics and Afghanistan,
the professionalism,
dedication and especially the "can
do" attitude of the entire division
ensured the provision of much
needed humanitarian assistance to
the people of Haiti. The tremendous
effort of 1 Canadian Air Division
brought great credit to the
Canadian Forces and to Canada.”
More realistic training supports mission
oldiers from 1st Battalion
training in an urban setting as part
of the build-up for Task Force
(TF) 3-10. In less than a year, TF
for the final stage of the CF
missionin that country. With support
from the residents of Victoriaville,
Quebec, the soldiers began
Sgt Éric Lévesque indicated
where the casualty evacuation
point will be established. “By
holding Ex CASTOR DISPERSÉ
in acivilian area, it makes the
training more realistic, right from
the start,” explained Maj Frédéric
Jean, who led the exercise. “During
their deployment in Afghanistan,
the soldiers will face an unfamiliar
environment. They’ll
also have to carry out their work
in the midst of acivilian population.”
According to Maj Jean, it is
possible to create a variety of relevant
scenarios right from the beginning
of the soldiers’ preparation,
even when holding Exercise
CASTOR DISPERSÉ in Victoriaville.
During the three-weeklong
exercise, the members of the
1 R22eRBattle Group carried out
a number of simulations similar to
realevents facedby troops in operational
situations.
“The residents of Victoriaville
playedabig part in this training,”
said Maj Jean. “We asked for
their cooperation in a variety of
ways. There were vehicle searches
and simulateddemonstrations.
We also ran scenarios where supporters
provided soldiers with important
information. These are
some examples of the level of
realism we achieved during the
training.”
The members of ACoy secured
a stretch of road, ensuring it was
clear ofexplosives. “I can’t think
of abetter placefor training,” said
Sgt Jean-François Vachon of A
Company, 1 R22eRBattle Group.
“Working outside of CFB Valcartier
has been a really interesting
experience. We understand the
complexity of urban operations
better. I’velearnedalot in the past
few days, and I really enjoyed this
exercise.”
