The citation of the Unit Commendation reads: “From January to April 2010, 1 Canadian Air Division achieved critical results during disaster relief operations in response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Memory trace Sgt Éric Lévesque indicated where the casualty evacuation point will be established. “By holding Ex CASTOR DISPERSÉ in acivilian area, it makes the training more realistic, right from the start,” explained Maj Frédéric Jean, who led the exercise. “During their deployment in Afghanistan, the soldiers will face an unfamiliar environment. They’ll also have to carry out their work in the midst of acivilian population.” According to Maj Jean, it is possible to create a variety of relevant scenarios right from the beginning of the soldiers’ preparation, even when holding Exercise CASTOR DISPERSÉ in Victoriaville. During the three-weeklong exercise, the members of the 1 R22eRBattle Group carried out a number of simulations similar to realevents facedby troops in operational situations. “The residents of Victoriaville playedabig part in this training,” said Maj Jean. “We asked for their cooperation in a variety of ways. There were vehicle searches and simulateddemonstrations. We also ran scenarios where supporters provided soldiers with important information.
