18 TRIDENT, MAY 17, 2010 Patient survey results addressed By June Dicks Quality Improvement Manager CF H Svcs C (A) CFHSvsc C (A) conducted aPatient Experience Survey from November 30 to December 11, 2009. You told us that for the most part we are doing a great job in the services we deliver to you, our patients. However there were a few areas that you felt we could improve upon. Patient Parking – This is a hot topic and we know it. You will be pleased that we have increased the number of patient parking spots in front of both the Stad Clinicand the Dockyard Clinic. Almost the entire front parking lot is being devoted solely to our patients. We believe this will alleviate your parking frustrations. Length of time to get an appointment in your CDU – Our model of careis based on us having our uniformed care providers inhouse approximately 50 per cent of the time. (CAROLYN HIRTLE) The Compensation Web Application (CWA) is a new tool available to DND employees to access information about their pay and benefits online. All employees with a MCAN user account can utilize this tool and it can be accessed through the DND Intranet site @ http://halifax.mil.ca. Pay The CWA provides employees with the ability to view their pay stubs and T4s electronically. You can even choose to only receive your pay stub electronically, thereby reducing paper. Employees can use the tool to calculate gross to net pay estimates for regular pay changes such as acting, promotion, revisions and statutory increments. You can also commence/ amend/stop voluntary deductions such as Canada Savings Bonds and additional income tax. The application does not allow employees to make modifications to mandatory deductions. Pension Employees no longer have to wait for their pension and benefits statement to arrive; it is always accessible to view through the CWA. There is also the option to calculate the cost of elective service via the Service Buyback Estimator and to calculate pension estimates. Please note however, that these are just estimates. It is important to make an appointment to meet with your Compensation Advisor to get accurate figures when you are planning for your retirement. Important: There are two links for each calculator. You must go to the calculators listed under Personal Tools (have a key next to them) to get information specific to your account. It will automatically populate your information and thereby provide more realistic estimates. If you use the calculators listed under Basic Tools, you will be prompted to provide more information as these are simply generating hypothetical information. To set up an account in CWA, you will require the following information: PRI number (on your cheque stub or DND ID card) Pension number (on your Pension and Benefits statement or call Joanne Richard, Compensation Advisor, @ 721-1144) Total deductions from last regular pay cheque (on your pay stub) Government email address Date of birth When you have all this information, go to the MARLANT website at http://halifax.mil.ca and click on CHRSC(A) (located in the Common Links at the bottom of the page). Then click on Compensation (in menu on right side of web page). Click on the link to the Compensation Web Application: http://www.tpsgcpwgsc.gc.ca/remuneration-compensation/txt/index-eng.html. From here, follow the directions for New Users, in which you will create an online profile. Once you have created your user name and password, you will be able to access this site at your convenience. To help you locate the site in the future, you may want to save it in your favourites. Please note that the CWA can only be accessed from computers on the DWAN and therefore not accessible from your home computer. If you have any questions about the CWA, please contact your Compensation Advisor. wehaveexperienced, on average,a 75 per cent absence of uniformed medical officers, med techs, and physician’s assistants in the Clinic. It has been difficult to backfill these positions,but we can tell you that we are monitoring wait times and working to change scheduling practices to increase efficiencies and decrease wait times. I know how to access services outside of CF HSvcs C(A) hours - This is now displayed on our Patient Website. We would however like to remind you that if at any time you feel you may be having a medical emergency, please call 911 or report to your nearest emergency department. There is also the CF Health Information Line 1-877- MED-DENT (1-877-633-3368) that you can call 24hrs aday/7 days per week. This line is designed to provide CF members with access to health care advice, general health information, and improving continuity of care when the Clinic is closed. Eyeglasses – At the present time we are making changes based on your feedback, which you will notice the next time you visit. Thereis also a PublicWorks tendering process underway to determine a service provider for the future provision of eye glasses in the CF. We want to hear from you. DeLong Special to the Trident et ready for a five-day-long Gmusical treat, hostedas part of the International Fleet Review (IFR) festivities. A number of bands will play at Alexander Keith’s International Pub in Centennial Village from June 26 to July 1,and the concerts will be available only to the DND community. “I come from a Navy family background so I can tell you that I’m very excited about playing at the International Fleet Review,” said Bruce Nelson, guitarist for Blueberry Grunt, one of the many bands playing at the IFR concerts. Nelson, son of CWO (ret’d) Chuck Nelson, highlighted anumber of the band’s successes, including playing the Jesus Jones’ song Right Here Right Now for Tourism Nova Scotia, and laughedabout the number of blueberry festivals the band has played for, largely thanks to the band’s name. “Some of the audience members actually thought it meant the food—blueberry grunt!” Labelledas a pop-rock band with a celtic twist, Blueberry Grunt, according to Nelson, is very excited to play for the IFR. Jonathan Goud, bass player for Telfer, said of the IFR: “It’s a great cause for celebration. We hope to throw a party for people and show them a good time.” Telfer is relatively new to the Halifax music scene. Playing every Thursday at the Carleton on Argyle St., and having recorded their debut album at the Sonic Temple last year, the high energy, punk rock band has recently established themselves as a popular musical group in Halifax. TRIDENT, MAY 17, 2010 19 A partnered operation in Helmand By Cpl Neil Dancer JTF-Afg/OMLT he soldiers of Kandak 1 were Tdusty but battle-ready when they arrived with their Canadian mentors at Camp Dwyer in Helmand Province. Kandak 1 belongs to the 1st Brigade, 205 Corps Afghan National Army (1/205 ANA), so they were more than 200 km from their normal area of operations in Zhari District, Kandahar Province. Kandak 1 was part of OPER- ATION MOSHTARAK (“together” in Dari), alarge-scale clearing operation designed to secure aTaliban stronghold in Marjah. The primary job of operational mentors is to train Afghan soldiers in full-spectrum operations andassist them in bringing security and stability to their country. In the days leading up to Op MOSHTA- RAK, the mentors deployed with Kandak 1 concentrated on basic soldier skills, including weapons handling andcompany formations, and realistic training in counter- IED techniques using live explosives and realisticcasualty evacuation scenarios. As the scheme ofmanoeuvre became more defined, Kandak 1 was tasked to secure the area immediately west of the Trik Zabor Canal road, partnered with two U.S. Stryker units. Kandak 1 was in ablocking position between Task Force Helmand, led by the British Army, and Task Force Leatherneck, led by the US Marine Corps. Within the first few days of the operation, Kandak 1 secured six complex village objectives, each offering its own set of challenges. The Afghan soldiers then remained in placefor the next month to secure all six villages, living in small compounds with their Canadian mentors. They interacted very well with the residents ofeach village,and quickly built a friendly rapport with elders. The first week of Op MOSHTA- RAK was kinetic, with insurgent forces delivering medium to heavy resistance. Once the push was under way, however, the insurgents dissipated in the face of superior firepower, and Kandak 1 pushed south to its last objectives. During this phase of the operation, one of the Afghan soldiers receivedagunshot wound in combat; he later died ofhis wounds,and his loss was felt by his ANA brothers and Canadians alike. The accurate insurgent fire also wounded several American soldiers. After pushing hard for a week, the forces deployed on OP MOSH- TARAK had to hold the ground they had taken. Strong points were established,adefensive routine began, and the Afghan forces really started to shine in the critical task of maintaining the security of all routes in the area of operations. No vehicle was lost on any route cleared by the ANA. Kandak 1 found half adozen IEDs but struck none, perhaps the best record of the dozens of units involved in OP MOSH- TARAK. In early March, when the Marines relieved the ANA, Kandak 1 began the long journey back to Kandahar Airfield, arriving on March 8 without incident. First, however, acelebration was held at Camp Leatherneck with a special meal preparedby the ANA and presentation of certificates and awards. The Marine, Stryker and ANA chains of command all acknowledged that Kandak 1 didan outstanding job, truly embracing the concept of partnered operations.
