14 TRIDENT, MAY 17, 2010 A guide to healthy gardening By Health Promotion Staff sun feels warm on your face, Tthe sky is blue, and the snow has melted. As Canadians, we truly look forward to the spring season. One common rite of the spring season is preparing our gardens so that wemay enjoy their beauty later. While some researchhas shown the energy weexpend while gardening to be too low in intensity to bring true fitness benefits, there is very clear evidence of other health benefits derived from this activity. Gardening is a great health activity as it disguises the workinvolved (it may not feel like work) and there is a wonderful reward for all of our efforts. In addition to the satisfaction of adding beauty to our properties, gardening can improve our overall mental health and well being through the satisfaction of knowing that we have spent time exercising in the great outdoors. Researchhas shown that gardening for 30 to 45 minutes several days a week can have significant health benefits. These benefits include decreasing a person’s risk of high blood pressure and diabetes, as well as contributing to healthier bones, muscles,and joints. In addition, gardening activities such as digging, lifting, trimming shrubs, and mowing lawns can require the same energy requirements as walking, cycling or swimming. As with other forms of physical activity, wemust plan our approach to gardening. If we have been sedentary during the winter months, it would be advisable to start abasic fitness routine before the gardening season begins. This preparation will help us to easeinto the activity and to avoid sore muscles and a tired back. When beginning any physical activity, it is always advisable to check with your family physician. For additional assistance, our Fitness and Sports Centre staff can also work with us to design a program to help us prepare our bodies for the gardening season. Anexcellent example of such a fitness program can also be found online at www.gardenfitness.com. It is important to approach aday in the garden in the same manner we wouldany other physical activity. To help us prepare, the Canadian Physiotherapy Association suggests the following: A warm up before you start your gardening workout helps to reduce muscle strain, injury and fatigue. Do some shoulder circles, trunk rotation, and heel/toe standing. You might even rehearse movements, like raking, as part of your warmup. Then take a few minutes to do the following stretches, and repeat them again at the end of your gardening activity. If you begin to feel abit stiff while gardening, pause and do more stretches. When raking or hoeing – keep your tools close to your body and your back straight to reduce strain. If you tend to bend over or reach too far while raking,consider using an ergonomic rake (available at garden centres). It will make the job easier and reduce strain to your back. When weeding or planting – do not bend from the waist. Squat or kneel on a kneeling pad. If you have difficulty getting up, use a kneeling pad / bench with a support handle for assistance. Give your back, legs and knees a break from stooping and kneeling by using tools withlong handles to help with the weeding; Squat or sit on the ground to trowel, rather than bending over. When digging or shovelling – insert the head of the shovel vertically into the ground and step on the blade. Lift small amounts at a time. Keep your back straight andbendat the knees. Avoid twisting. Use a wheelbarrow to move big or heavy loads. Choose a shovel with a weight and handle length that is appropriatefor your size and for the job you are doing; Give your back abreak by using a smaller shovel, reducing the temptation to lift large amounts of soil; Spread heavy lifting anddigging tasks over a week rather than a weekend, and spread major projects throughout the seasons. Take time to recover between them. When lifting or carrying–know your limits and lift properly: bend your knees, not your back. Keep the load close to your body. Don’t lift items that are too heavy for you to handle–get help. Use a wagon or wheelbarrow to transport supplies and / or to move or carry heavy items. TRIDENT, MAY 17, 2010 15 The Stampeders and In-Flight Safety will kick off the DND Family Appreciation Day concert. (WWW.STAMPEDERS.NET) Stampeders headline Family Day concert By Benjamin J. DeLong Special to the Trident The Stampeders, one of Canada’s top rock groups, famous since their glory days in the 1970s, will be playing for the DND community and their families at the end of DND Family Appreciation Day on June 25. With four Juno awards and 12 top 10 Canadian singles, the Stampeders, who originated in Calgary, Alberta, are considered Canadian rock icons. “Weended up having a lot of hits as a trio,” said Rich Dodson, guitar player for the Stampeders, concerning previous members of the band. “We’re back as the original three-piece band, and we’ve been touring about 25 to 30 dates a year now.” The Stampeders split up in 1977,but reunited in 1992 to begin touring and recording again. “We started off as a country rock group, but then graduated to more of a rock thing. Sometimes we get additional players and try to expand and try other things, but we still like performing as a trio. And it feels fun, too.” Dodson said that the band—other members including Kim Berly, and Ronnie King—has a lot of friends and stage technicians in Halifax and continued: “We love Halifax. Some of our best fans and members live there. I love the city and we always bring the good weather with us.” Joining the Stampeders for the DND Family Appreciation Day concert will be In-Flight Safety, a Halifax-based, fourpiece pop band. The band has been together for six years, releasing three albums, scoring an award-winning music video for their 2006 song, The Coast is Clear,and starting their own record label, Night Danger. In-Flight Safety will begin playing at 8 p.m. at the Molson Entertainment tent at the south end of HMC Dockyard. The Stampeders will go onstage at 10pm. DeLong Special to the Trident s festive as it has been for the Aprevious 13 years, this year’s annual DND Family Appreciation day may prove to top them all: this year marks the 100th year of the Canadian Navy, and to celebrate, this year’s Family Day theme is a salute to the Canadian Navy. DND Family Appreciation day is organized by PSP Halifax, on behalf of the Commander JTFA, and will take place on June 25 at the south end of HMC Dockyard. Events, entertainment, and prizes are catered to people of all ages andadmissionis free. This day is held annually to show thanks to all CF members, DND and NPF employees, and their families for their support. The day’s activities, booths, and prizes are funded by sponsors, including the returning presenting sponsor, Sobeys. More than a prayer for breakfast By Benjamin J. DeLong Special to the Trident “We are very happy to beinCanada where we arefree to come together and free to pray,” announced Cdr Baxter Park, Formation Chaplain, as he introduced the 12th annual MARLANT Interfaith Prayer Breakfast in Juno Towers’ Atlantic/Windsor room on April 29, 2010. “Here wehave representatives from all of the religions descended from Abraham, coming together in a spirit of thanksgiving,anda spirit of hope,” Cdr Park said as he acknowledged the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim guests. The prayer breakfast was attended by about 80 people, including people Chaplain Lt(N) David Pahs called VIPs: representatives from MARLANT’s leadership. Lt(N) Pahs said that we were very fortunate to haveleaders who “pray with us, and who pray for us.” This also marked the first prayer breakfast featuring an Imam Chaplain, Lt(N) Ishak Yorganci, who sang a selectionfrom the Qur’anin its native language. Although the majority of the Amusements will include inflatable castles for children, HMC ships open for tours, and the real crowd pleaser, the free prize draws. More than $30,000 worth of prizes will begiven out to attendees, who must be in the Molson Canada Entertainment tent at the time of the draw to be eligible. Prize draw tickets are free upon admission. The prize draws take place in the Molson Canada Entertainment tent on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Porter Airlines,a returning Family Day platinum plus sponsor, will once again provide $1,200 travel vouchers to fly anywhere Porter Airlines flies. Stewart Hunter took the podium and spoke on common prayer myths, later to conclude: “Prayer is listening, prayer can be learned, prayer is not complicated, prayer is not a grim, heavy, laborious duty, and God is not remote: He is here.” Rev. Hunter works as the District Hortons. Other prizes will begiven out by Family Day sponsors, VIA Rail Canada, Ambassatours, The Ronnie Farrell Home Selling Team, Molson Canada.
