Early Mystery Fandom
The 1969 party was a huge success, and our parties became an annual event
through 1976. The Bronx seemed to become the gathering place for mystery fans,
which was probably appropriate since Edgar Allan Poe had lived about a mile from
where I did. Several times in the 1970s, Otto Penzler invited his collaborators to his
Bronx apartment, the place where his publishing house, Mysterious Press, started.
In 1977, Carol and I did not have time to prepare for our usual Saturday party.
Friday, we were attending the MWA banquet because Penzler, Shibuk, Steinbrunner,
and I were nominated for an Edgar for Encyclopedia of Mystery and Detection.
Bouchercon was becoming the place for fans to meet, and the Mystery Readers’ Parties
became a pleasant memory.
