On the edge of the Grunewald in the west of Charlottenburg the great
oval of the Olympiastadion Berlin lies at the heart of spacious grounds. The
monumental construction with its clear geometry and austere façade of
Franconian shell limestone has impressed visitors for 70 years now.
Seemingly unchanged, the sports arena has survived the turbulent events of history
- but appearances can deceive: the classic torso conceals one of the most
modern multifunctional arenas in europe. the stadium modernisation took four
years to complete whilst all the regular events were staged as usual. In fact creating
the new look took around eighteen months longer than the construction
of the original building in the 1930s.
the olympiastadion Berlin was built for the 1936 olympic games to designs
by the architect Werner march. prior to the reunification of the two German
states in 1990 the stadium was restored and modernised on several occasions.
In 1998 the Berlin Senate decided to completely modernise the stadium while
preserving its historical character: renovation and transformation into a virtually
new building.
the individual limestone panels were carefully dismantled piece by piece,
numbered and cleaned. the stadium pitch was lowered by about two-and-ahalf
metres to meet not only the fifa specifications for international football
matches but also the strict conditions laid down by the International association
of athletics Federations IaaF. the result was a success: Berlin won the bid
to host the 2009 World championships in athletics.
the complete core of the stadium was removed and replaced by a modern
internal infrastructure. the most spectacular change is the stadium roof which
sets new technological standards. the seemingly floating construction with its
translucent outer skin is supported by twenty slim columns and shields almost
all of the 74,244 seats from rain and sun. the roof opens at the marathon Gate
providing a view of the ‘Glockenturm’ bell tower. as a result the modern roof
design harmonises well with the overall historical structure - something the
Berlin Senate was determined to achieve.

Without SportS?
It owes its origin to sport and sport is still its source of inspiration today.
After renovation was completed in 2004 the Olympiastadion Berlin returned
to the ranks of Europe’s most modern sports and multifunctional arenas.
Major sporting events are now on the stadium’s regular agenda.
football, Germany’s number one sport, plays a key role. the highlight of football
history at the olympiastadion berlin was the 2006 fifa World cup. Six games
were played in the stadium, including the unforgettable quarterfinal, in which
Germany defeated argentina in penalty kicks, and the memorable final match
on July 9 between France and Italy. the Squadra azzura became the 18 th World
cup champion after winning that game in penalty kicks at the olympiastadion
Berlin.
Since 1985 the olympiastadion berlin has been the venue of the German football
association (dfb) cup finals in men’s football. and the women’s teams also
battle for their prestigious cup here. the olympiastadion Berlin is of course the
home ground of the city’s federal league players Hertha BSc Berlin. the club
is closely linked with the stadium’s history: Hertha fans always have, and always
will, consider it ‘their’ olympiastadion Berlin.
athletics also have a strong tradition at the olympiastadion Berlin. the Interna-
tional Stadium Festival (IStaF) - one of the most important sports gatherings
for the world’s top athletes - takes place every year at the stadium. the 2009
iaaf World championships in athletics, one of the world‘s most important
athletics competitions and second only to the olympic Games, took place at
the olympiastadion Berlin.
but people flock to the stadium not just for sport. the olympiastadion berlin
offers stars a unique setting for rock and pop concerts. Berlin has numerous
concert halls - but where else in the city can 70.000 people gather in such a
fantastic environment with such excellent acoustics for a live performance of
their favourite stars?
