Presidents’ Messages
Dear Alumnus,
As I write this, there is a
lot of talk about New Year’s
resolutions. Advertising
flyers are promoting fitness
equipment and weight loss
programs. Health spas
and gyms are running
promotions. My pastor has
preached about daily Bible
study, prayer, and reading
the Bible through during
2008 for the past two Sundays. I
hope the daily disciplines of taking
care of your physical and spiritual
needs are priorities in your life.
One of my good friends lost his
wife last week. John is a stronger
man than I and spoke at his wife’s
funeral. John said he has learned
that every good message should
have three points. He shared the
following:
His wife was a woman of many
talents. He used Jesus’ parable of
the talents from Matthew 25 and
said it is not how many talents
we are given, it’s what we do with
them that matters. She had many
and used hers to bless others.
His wife was a servant. John
used the story from Mark 10 where
James and John asked that they sit
on the immediate right and left of
Jesus in His kingdom. Jesus told
them whoever wants to be great
among you must be a servant. John
said true greatness is achieved by
serving others, and his wife did
that well.
His wife persevered under
trial. One of her favorite verses of
scripture was James 1:12 where
it says, “Blessed is the man who
perseveres under trial, because
when he has stood the test, he will
receive the crown of life that God
has promised to those who love
him.” She had diabetes, epilepsy,
and an autistic son. Yet, John said
she taught him what it meant
to truly trust God, and she has
received the promised crown.
You might wonder
why I relate this
story. We have all
been endowed with
certain talents. The
most important thing
is not how great our
talents are; it’s what
we do with them.
Are we using them
to serve others? Are
we using them to
serve our church, our schools, and
organizations we join; or do we
just have our name on the roll? My
mother used to say, if something is
worth doing, it is worth doing well.
We all face hardships in life. Do
we become bitter or better? Can we
face them while still rejoicing in
the Lord for His many blessings?
During the early days of 2008,
let’s commit to using our talents to
make the world a better place and
being servants who bless everyone
around us, persevering no matter
what the world throws at us.
One of the ways we bless others
as alumni is through the Alumni
Scholarship Fund. When you are
contacted this spring, please give
generously to help students who
would otherwise have a difficult
time paying for room and board,
books, and other expenses.
Thank you for blessing your
alma mater. In the last 20 months,
alumni have given $257,000 toward
the Alumni Laundry project,
exceeding our goal of $250,000!
Alumni can be proud of another
worthwhile project successfully
completed. The Executive Board
will be choosing the alumni’s
next project at the February board
meeting.
Alumni Meritorious Award
recipients are recognized each
year. If you know of someone
deserving of one of the four
awards, take a few minutes to
complete the nomination form in
this edition or online at www.cofo.
edu/alumni.
Thank you for your support
of College of the Ozarks. I hope
to see you at the Forsythe Fellows
luncheon in May.
Warm regards,
Alumni News • Winter 2008 Page 3
Dear Alumnus,
“Celebration 101,” held at Homecoming, was the
culminating event of the Centennial Year. Along with
traditional events such as the Homecoming Parade
and activity booths, a couple of less traditional
events, specific to the Centennial Finale, took
place. These included a time capsule burial and the
unveiling of a 101-pound fruitcake at a celebration
reception. When the future family of Hard Work
U opens the time capsule in 2057, they will find a
Bible and American flag resting on top. Incidentally,
these are two items that alumnus York Jackson
(class of 1919) placed in a capsule that rested in the
cornerstone of Abernathy Hall for many years. There
is comfort knowing that the same values cherished
today were present at the institution long ago.
This year was focused on the College’s mission
and history; however, we should not lose sight of
these once the celebration has faded. They serve
as an anchor to the foundational values of the
institution. The mission, in particular, must be
celebrated, as well as preserved.
Even though the Centennial Celebration ended
in November, the College continues to bustle with
activity. Former White House Press Secretary
Mr. Tony Snow visited the campus December
6, and spoke on “Overcoming Adversity” at the
Fall Gittinger Community
Convocation. Mr. Snow has
indeed seen his share of
adversity, battling not only
the White House Press Corps,
but also cancer, which has
threatened his life more than
once. No doubt his message
benefited all who heard it.
Many of our students are facing
hardships and are in a fight
to overcome them. There are
times throughout our lives when we need to hear
from individuals like Tony Snow; they can offer the
inspirational push needed to finish the battle.
The College has begun preparing for the NAIA
Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament. The week
of the Tournament is always an exciting time, as
the campus will welcome more than 10,000 visitors
during the event. This year the Tournament will be
held March 12-18. Please call and order your tickets
so you will not miss this special event.
As you can see, it has already been a great start
to a new century. God bless you and your family.
Sincerely,
Jerry C. Davis, President
Thanks to Alumni—Laundry Project Is a Success!
Hello, from Phil and Connie
Ensminger. We have been
privileged to serve as Alumni
Laundry supervisors for two years,
and what a wonderful and exciting
two years this has been for us!
Through the generous efforts
of the Alumni Association and
its Alumni Laundry Renovation
Project, we have seen many new
and innovative changes, including
new washers and dryers, and a
complete makeover of the facility.
This past year a first-rate flat iron
was installed which has helped
to increase production, allotting
more time for effort in other areas.
All these changes have made the
laundry not only more efficient,
but also a cleaner and safer
working environment.
Our students have learned
to tackle the many aspects of
Connie and Phil Ensminger greeted guests
at the Alumni Laundry rededication at
Homecoming.
laundry; but most importantly,
we have made this workstation
a safe place for them to grow
in character. We feel this is just
another part of ministry that
the Lord has provided for us.
We pray w ith the students who
ask for prayer and listen to their
needs. Our motto is, “in order to
become a good leader, you must
first learn to serve.” Every day our
students serve and impact several
members of our campus family—
faculty, staff, and other students
by washing and pressing their
clothes. Words of affirmation have
been offered by outside workers
regarding the Alumni Laundry’s
impeccable cleanliness and
management. We give all the glory
to God and thank all the Alumni
who have made this workstation a
better place.

Important Notes from the Admissions Office
Submitted by Marci Linson, Dean of Admissions
A few issues ago, I wrote the following in the
Alumni News: “It’s hard to believe, but many of my
college classmates are already beginning the college
search process for their children.”
Well, since then several second generation
students have come through the front gate,
providing me with the great opportunity to be
reunited with old friends. It doesn’t seem like that
long ago that we all were walking through the
Gates of Opportunity for the first time. Now, we
are preparing our own children for the exciting
experience of entering college as they wade through
the myriad of brochures and viewbooks that they
are flooded with during their high school years.
Time flies by even more rapidly during the
admissions process at College of the Ozarks. It
seems that students apply for admission and before
we realize it the year has passed, and it is time to
begin classes. You may be aware that admission to
the College is extremely competitive; out of over
3500 applications for admission for the 2007-08
school year, approximately 280 new freshmen
were admitted. Unfortunately, I spend more time
consoling candidates and their parents than I do
congratulating them, and sometimes I find myself
consoling alumni whose children haven’t been
admitted for their preferred term.
During my tenure in admissions, I have
encountered the following myth: “Alumni children
can apply for admission at any time and be
guaranteed admission for whichever term they desire.”
We are very up-front in our acknowledgement of
the fact that no one is guaranteed admission. We do
however, provide priority consideration for alumni
children.
Priority Consideration
Each year we continue to provide priority
consideration to alumni children until February 15.
It is important that we have a cut-off date for the
alumni consideration in fairness to the thousands
of non-alumni applications that we receive each
year. Over the last ten years, applications have
substantially increased. It is our first priority to keep
our residence halls filled with eligible students, and
to do that we must admit students. We provide the
February 15 date for alumni so that we may proceed
with other admissions to help meet our goal.
The College requires the following information
during the admissions process for first-time
students: High school transcript; ACT scores;
Applicant data sheet; Physical exam; Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA);
Two letters of recommendation;
Personal interview
It typically takes approximately
10-14 days for the financial aid
staff to process the FAFSA and
get the results to the admissions
office. It takes approximately
one week to process the physical.
If information is incomplete on either form, the
admissions process is delayed. Simply turning in
the forms does not satisfy the requirements; the
requirements are considered complete after the
forms have been processed and results provided to
the admissions office.
Does the Early Bird Really Get the Worm?
Occasionally I am asked if submitting an
application for admission early is beneficial, and
we certainly do have applications on file currently
from tenth-graders in high school. While early
applications demonstrate an eagerness to attend
the College, the promptness with which a candidate
completes the admissions process is more beneficial.
Much of the information required for the admissions
process is time sensitive (physical exams cannot be
over one year old; the FAFSA is based on the tax year
prior to desired entry) and cannot be completed until
the candidate is actually a senior in high school.
There is a “window” of time within which candidates
should complete the admissions process to have the
earliest consideration for admission. It is possible for
a candidate to have the entire admissions process
complete (with the exception of the FAFSA) during
the first semester of the senior year in high school.
The FAFSA then needs to be completed as quickly as
possible after January 1!
Alumni are urged to remember the mission of the
College is our priority, and that is to serve students
who are from the Ozarks region, who demonstrate
financial need and show ability to be successful
in college. The admissions staff and committee
is charged with selecting students who, based on
information presented in the admission process, will
be best served by the financial investment made by
the College.
Please contact the admissions office at any time
if you have any questions or if your student needs
assistance during the admissions process. Our
phone numbers are 1-800-222-0525, or 417-334-6411,
ext. 4219 or 4220. We can also be reached by e-mail
One of those stories focused
on the unique hurdles that blind
veterans struggle to overcome
and described new therapies and
technologies being made available
to them. A second story profiled
National Correspondent for ABC News - Erin Hayes, ’79
Honored With Four Emmy Nominations
story was a tribute
to the children
of those military
service members now
deployed in Iraq and
Afghanistan.
World News also
received a nomination
for Hayes’ report, “The
Blind Trumpeter,”
in the category of
Outstanding Feature
Story in a Regularly Scheduled
Newscast. This was the story of an
18-year-old college student, Patrick
Henry Hughes. Despite being blind
and wheelchair-bound, Hughes
plays trumpet in the University
of Louisville marching band, and
performs as a classical pianist, as
well.
Hayes has worked as a
correspondent for ABC News since
1993, and is a broadcast news
veteran of 30 years. Her career
began at the College of the Ozarks
radio station in Point Lookout,
MO. She worked at KTHS radio in
Berryville and in local television
news in Springfield, MO, Nashville,
TN., and Kansas City, MO, for
a decade before moving to the
networks, joining CBS News in
1989.
For much of her career,
Hayes has covered breaking
national news as well as feature
reporting. Most recently, however,
her assignments have focused
on human interest stories,
particularly those of American
military service members and their
families. “I find, as I get older,”
Hayes said, “that I gravitate toward
stories that offer insights into the
issues that we face as a nation,
as a people. Regardless of one’s
opinion of the war in Iraq, I think
most Americans have great respect
for the courage of the military
servicemen and women serving
there, and for the sacrifices they
and their families are making right
now. There is a great interest in
their personal stories. So I’m very
gratified to be able to work on the
World News continuing ‘Homefront’
series. I also find that members
of the military are enormously
appreciative when their concerns,
contributions, and sacrifices are
recognized and understood by a
national audience.
“And, then, stories like those of
Patrick Henry Hughes, the ‘blind
trumpeter,’ are an absolute gift,”
she continued “Interviewing that
extraordinary young man was the
opportunity of a lifetime for me.
For those of us who sometimes feel
overwhelmed by life’s challenges
and are tempted to grumble about
the troubles we face, Patrick’s story
is a real awakening. I don’t think
anyone can come away from his
story unmoved.
She continued, “I wrote in a
followup article to the World News
story that ‘Patrick Henry Hughes
quietly makes you listen,’ and that
is one of his remarkable qualities.
His approach to life has so much
to teach all of us, young and old.
Stories like his are one of the
reasons, some 30 years into this
career, that I still absolutely love
my job.”
Hayes is a four-time winner of
the national Edward R. Murrow
award for reporting, a two-time
winner of the Alfred I. du Pont-
Columbia University silver baton
for reporting, a winner of the
National Sigma Delta Chi Award,
and the National Investigative
Reporters and Editors award,
among others.

On the Lookout
Dear Alumnus,
For the past nine years,
members of the Student Alumni
Association have taken time
out of their hectic schedules
to participate in the Alumni
Scholarship Campaign, raising
over $245,000. In years past,
SAA has held phonathons. Last
year, realizing the difficulty of
reaching many alumni by phone,
we experimented with a mail
campaign, which was a huge
success, raising a record amount
for the scholarship.
As President of the Student
Alumni Association, I have the
privilege of getting to know some
of the deserving scholarship
recipients. All of the young
men and women who received
the scholarship have proven
themselves to be hardworking
people of good character and
have expressed their heartfelt
gratitude to all who have faithfully
contributed to the scholarship.
One of the recipients, my good
friend Katie Clements, was given
the chance to go on a mission trip
to Africa. She has shared some of
her wonderful stories and touching
pictures with me. I’ve seen,
firsthand, the impact that this trip
has had on her. She said, “This past
summer was one of the best in my
life, and I owe my experiences to
this scholarship.”
