Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Fairfield Prep,
The Irish Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-89) said it so well in one of his famous poems: “The world is charged
with the grandeur of God. It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;”
One of the tasks of Jesuit education is to help students become attentive to God’s presence in their lives and in their
world, so that they develop a life habit of responding to this presence with their talents, gifts and skills as a man or woman
for others. In this issue you’ll learn more about the Prep Fine Arts program. Our Prep artists are indeed learning to use their
eyes, hearts and hands to interpret the world for themselves and for others by shining brightly to proclaim God’s grandeur.
According to St. Ignatius of Loyola, by becoming more attentive to God’s presence in the mundane and the magnificent
leads us to gratitude. And when we feel this way, we are moved to share our experience in love and in generous service of
which many Prep alumni demonstrate so often in their daily lives.
Thus I am very pleased to announce that we are establishing a new alumni award: the St. Ignatius of Loyola Alumni
Award. Please read the description below, and consider nominating a Prep alumnus who you feel exemplifies the Jesuit ideals
from our school. We will present the award at one of Prep’s school liturgies in order that our current students, faculty
and staff may truly become edified by the real genuineness of one of our Prep Man for Others.
You will also find the Annual Report 2008-2009 in this issue. I am continually humbled by the generosity of so many who
help to shape who we are at Fairfield Prep. Thank you so much. Your support of our important mission manifest in so many
ways is a real testimony to the great school we are and the wonderful community we continue to evolve in emitting the
grandeur of God. May you and your loved ones be blessed with a New Year that is filled with wonder and gratitude!

announces establishment of the
St. Ignatius of Loyola Alumni Award
All Jesuit schools seek to educate their students to become Men and
Women for others. the various Jesuit high schools share a common
document: the Characteristics of the Graduate at Graduation. the recipient of
the Fairfield Prep St. Ignatius of Loyola Alumni Award will show evidence of
having fulfilled those characteristics’ expectations.
the five Characteristics of the Graduate at Graduation are:
i. open to Growth
ii. intellectually Competent
iii. Religious
iv. loving
v. Committed to Doing Justice
Details regarding nominating outstanding alumni will be available in early
March 2010, and will be communicated electronically and on our website.
