Thanks for gett<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> touch Bridget—delighted we could help<br />

I read <strong>with</strong> delight the report of the out<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g to Westray by<br />

Ela<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e S<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>clair. It brought back so many happy memories<br />

of a w<strong>on</strong>derful day out <strong>with</strong> the Orkney FHS. I felt I must<br />

write and tell you about my experience of that lovely day.<br />

I was <strong>with</strong> my husband <strong>on</strong> holiday <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Orkney, planned<br />

to co<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>cide <strong>with</strong> the out<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g. For me the out<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g had an<br />

extra pleasure as I had recently found that a sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

cous<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> of m<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e was now liv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Westray. We were both<br />

born <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Hertfordshire England our grandparents be<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

Orcadians. We had never made met before and were able<br />

to spend a very happy morn<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g together <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Snug of<br />

the Pierowall Hotel exchang<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g family history stories and<br />

look<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g at old family photographs. On the way home <strong>on</strong><br />

the ferry I met <strong>with</strong> another sec<strong>on</strong>d cous<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> and we were<br />

able to expand our knowledge of our family history. All<br />

made possible by the w<strong>on</strong>derful organisati<strong>on</strong> of the<br />

Orkney FHS. Thank you.<br />

Another thank you must go to the w<strong>on</strong>derful team that<br />

offer such will<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g support to members who just drop <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong><br />

them <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the office. George stayed beh<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>d after his go<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

home time, just to complete his search for the death<br />

details of the brothers of my great grandfather Benjam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Hagar Smith. I had popped <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>to the Archives to get more<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>formati<strong>on</strong> about their father D<strong>on</strong>ald Smith’s Trust<br />

left after his death to care for his wife. When I returned<br />

George told me the research had almost brought him to<br />

tears. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> sad demise of those poor brothers was hard<br />

to believe. Out of the six s<strong>on</strong>s born to D<strong>on</strong>ald Smith<br />

and Mary Craigie <strong>on</strong>ly my great grandfather lived<br />

to adulthood. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> eldest s<strong>on</strong> a tw<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> D<strong>on</strong>ald died of<br />

of Craigiefield. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> next William Craigie Smith died<br />

aged 5 of a childhood illness the same week as his<br />

sister died. John Duguid Smith was drowned aged 18<br />

years when the boat transport<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g cattle for his father<br />

floundered. His body was washed up many weeks later<br />

<strong>on</strong> Shap<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>say. His body was identified by the c<strong>on</strong>tents of<br />

his pockets his coat had been tightly fastened preserv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

both body and the c<strong>on</strong>tents of his pockets.<br />

Another baby s<strong>on</strong> died a few m<strong>on</strong>ths old. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> youngest<br />

s<strong>on</strong> David Craigie Smith was killed aged 11 years by a<br />

runaway horse, his feet caught <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> the trail<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g re<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s he<br />

was pulled across a ploughed field cause bra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> damage.<br />

Of the six daughters three lived to marry and have<br />

families <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>clud<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g tw<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s who married Camer<strong>on</strong> Kent and<br />

Malcolm Corst<strong>on</strong> and both went to live <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Owen Sound<br />

Ontario. Only <strong>on</strong>e daughter rema<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed liv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Albert<br />
